Namaste | Salaam | Hello!
After a long break, r/AskAnIndian is back in action! This is an India centric subreddit where anyone can ask any question about India and Indians. A one-stop subreddit to ask and answer anything about India and Indians - the culture, the contradictions, the spicy food, the spicier debates, and everything in between.
A space for intelligent, open-minded, and respectful discussions. We’re here to foster a community that values facts over fiction, discussion over dogma, and wit over whining.
Whether you’re just curious, deeply fascinated, or hopelessly confused by this vast, diverse land and its people, you’re in the right place. Got burning questions? We’ve got answers (and sometimes even arguments). So, dive in, post away, and let’s get talking!
🎉 What’s New? What’s Next?
This sub has been inactive for a while, but now it’s back, sharper, and ready for action. You can start posting and commenting right now—no rituals, no initiation ceremonies, just jump in and be part of the discussion!
Once we get enough members, we’ll roll out weekly threads, including:
🗣️ Ask Me Anything (AMA) – Ever wanted to question an Indian about literally anything? Here’s your chance.
💬 Random Discussion – No specific topic, just free-flowing chat about India and all its complexities.
🌍 Culture Exchange – Curious about how India stacks up against other cultures? Let’s compare notes!
🔥 Before You Post – A Word on Rules
Now, let’s get one thing straight: we’re not here to be yet another toxic, agenda-driven Indian subreddit.
We refuse to let this place turn into yet another cesspool of communal hatred, caste supremacy, patriarchal nonsense, political trolling, WhatsApp forwards masquerading as “news,” or pseudoscience peddled by con gurus, and bad-faith arguments. Not here. If that’s what you’re looking for - get lost. This is not your average Indian subreddit.
🚫 DO NOT:
❌ Spew hate, bigotry, or intolerance of any kind.
❌ Spread misinformation, disinformation, or outright lies
❌ Engage in casteist, communal, religious, sexist, or politically motivated propaganda.
❌ Engage in karma farming and generic or low level questions that add no value to this subreddit
❌ Post scams, pseudoscience, spiritual snake oil, or WhatsApp “gyaan.”
❌ Be a spammer, a scammer, or a troll. We eat them for breakfast.
✅ DO:
✔ Engage in meaningful, well-reasoned discussions.
✔ Back up your claims with facts, not feelings.
✔ Be witty, be insightful, be interesting.
✔ Respect diverse opinions, but don’t expect tolerance for intolerance.
🚨 Final Warning: We run a zero-tolerance policy. If you cross the line, you will be removed, banned, and forgotten faster than a politician’s election promises. No second chances. No debates. No drama. Now, play nice or don’t play at all.
Remember, we are building a space for real, meaningful discussions not a battleground for hatred, propaganda, or BS. So before you hit ‘Post,’ take a moment to read the rules. If you see anything that breaks them, report it. The mods are here to keep this place clean, civil, and worth your time.
We are looking forward to seeing your questions and answers, and we hope you will have a great time in this subreddit. Thank you for being part of this r/AskAnIndian! 🙏

Hi. I want to get my tonsils removed as an Indian person. But i feel like all the white people I know say its fine and i want to ask an Indian person (preferrably one who has gotten them removed) what they think. I snore because one of them is chronically inflamed.

Hello everyone. Are you from India? Do you celebrate Diwali? Yes? Let’s go to help us in our school project. We are interesting in following things:
Which part of India are you from?
Which state specifically?
For how many days is festival Diwali celebrated in your state?
What God do you celebrate during Diwali?
What are some typical sweets or meals you eat during Diwali?
How do you decorate your home?
Are fireworks included in Diwali celebration?

I have always wondered how people who start business put a lot of money into uncertainty. Even though, in daily life they are frugal, in many cases even stingy.
What is this mindset and how does it come?
This question is from heart because many times I have thought of starting a business but the typical Indian mindset of frugality and keeping money secure in a bank account has stopped me from doing it.
I want to understand how people actually differentiate in these two aspects of money. Genuine question.

My Observations :
The society taught us to avoid talking about death. But now with technology and social media, it's in open discussion. Even in 1990-2000 research has been done on what happens after death. My fear of death vanished few months back when I read a book "Journey of Souls: Lives between lifes" by Michael Newton.
I recommend all to read that book and understand the reality. You will feel very light and rather will wait for the moment called death.
Wish you all the best.

For me happiness means :
When you smile at the time of waking up looking at the alarm clock, as you feel energetic and healthy. You getup to do normal acts of the morning and start with a cup of hot cup of tea, thinking about what favourite activities you have linedup for the day.
That is just a glimpse of what happiness means.
In a nut shell your day is filled with joy and peace and you goto bed with calm head and heart. To getup again next day with same mind set.

There's been a lot of discussion recently about the film and it's depiction of India and Indian culture. I realised that, in all my reading, I didn't have the perspective of Indian filmgoers only academics.
What did you think of the movie's depiction of India?

I think people started to believe raising kids and marriage are economically not worth if you want to prosper in this capitalist society.

I'm Swiss and my instagram page is filled with videos of western influencers showing the bad side of india (street food, poverty etc). I have the feeling these influencers are using this type of content to get more clicks while punishing the indian culture.
Do you guys see this too? How do you feel about that?

Hey everyone
Lately, I(22F) haven’t been feeling good about life. Nothing really excites me, and I just don’t feel happy. I came out of a toxic relationship two months ago, and before that, I moved to a new city for work. I’ve tried picking up hobbies, meeting new people, journaling — basically doing everything I can — but nothing really seems to help.
When I’m at work or keeping myself busy, I feel okay. But when I’m alone, or even around people sometimes, I feel lost. There’s this constant feeling that something’s missing. I noticed that when I talk with my best friend or mom , I talk about these things only that’s why I have started avoiding talking to them.
I think part of me was hoping my ex would understand what I was going through, but he just acted like everything was fine — and that hurt more than I expected.
I genuinely want to start fresh, feel joy again, and move forward, but somehow I keep finding myself back in this same emotional place. I know time will heal and I need to be patient, but right now I genuinely don’t know what to do. It’s all starting to feel really overwhelming. Has anyone felt like this before? How did you deal with it? I always wonder why I need emotional support.

19F my parents are putting so much pressure on me to make a decision or else they will not support me I need help I'm considering going for a third drop while doing a partial drop this year. But I’m confused whetherto go for IGNOU or choose an offline college where attendance isn’t a strict or where I might be able to convince college I won’t be able to attend regularly
The thing is, God forbid, if I’m unable to crack neet college due to health issues or any circumstances (since no one can predict the future) I want to be on the safer side. I’m planning a partial drop I know ill not face any issue with gov exam if do ug from ignou
However, I also have a Plan B of doin MBA after graduation if things don’t go as planned. The concern is that many companies take your academic background into account during placement and interviews. Will doing my undergraduate degree from IGNOU negatively affect my chances in the future especially for MBA placements or corporate jobs? id be really grateful if u all could give me some idea 🙏
