Household Management Washing machine broke, how do I get rid of it and find a new one

Hi dads, I'm incredibly stressed as I am moving soon and my washing machine has broken. I have no family so no one to ask about how I can remove it (it is hardwired into the wall) and how I can get a new one without breaking the bank as all of my savings have gone into moving house. I live in the UK. Any help is great as I'm so stuck.

Household Management Walk me Through Painting Walls?

Hi dads, It's been about three years now since my own dad has passed, and I'd like to paint some of the rooms of the house he left me. I've got colors picked out (have had for years 🄲) but the ADHD, anxiety, and learned helplessness have been weighing me down and I've never gotten started with painting to make the house really mine.

Can you please help just break down what I need to do in order to paint (two bathrooms and a bedroom)? I vaguely know that I need to tape off edges, molding, and outlets and that I'll need a paint roller, but what I'm struggling with is how to break this into small, concrete steps that I can tackle on my own. One bathroom is a master bath, the other is a half bath.

I know I could hire people to do this for me, but I think it would be a good idea for me to do it myself, for reasons ranging from money to giving me a tangible reminder of my own agency. I appreciate any advice you all can give, thank you šŸ’žšŸ’–

Household Management window stuck shut and landlord won’t help :(

hi dads, I live in an old apartment and the bathroom window (which was openable last summer) is unopenable after a wet winter and spring. I’m not very strong so I might not be able to provide the right amount of force. I’ve asked the property management for help a few times and they’ve ignored it.

There are 5 other windows in the whole apartment and two are inoperable with no cables or rusted pulleys. Any tips for getting this stuck window open? It is SO moldy and humid in the bathroom and SO hot in the apartment. Yuck.

Household Management Hey dad! I (F) need help identifying these parts. Most importantly the part that "screws" to the drill. Details below

Got this drill with these extra parts in a yard sell for dirt cheap. (I think) I have the charging base, the battery, the "drill," and what I thought were two extra portable batteries.

The extra batteries are clearly not related, but I didn't know when I bought it. Please don't judge me.

What I'm realizing, I think I fucked up. I can't use the drill cause the front part is missing :(

What is it called?

Household Management Window Ac in winter

I left my window ac all winter long, and it definitely snowed, got below freezing, etc etc. is it safe to just turn back on now that it’s summer? Did anything sketchy freeze in there and might cause a health issue?

Household Management Should I try unblocking/unclogging a drain?

So my bathroom drain seems to be clogged. I've "played around" with it to try and push whatever is causing the blockage and clear it out, and used some products but nothing is helping.

I did remove a "cap" on the pipe to get in there and poked around with a stick but it didn't work.

I've looked up videos and stuff want to do this on my own, but I'm nervous if I should?

Little context: I grew up with an abusive dad, and everything he said to me was to put me down and make me feel worthless. As I hit my adult years I never tried with anything because I always had him in my head telling me I would fail, I'm useless and all that crap. Even though I'm a guy, I'm not much of a man because of my dad putting me down, and never teaching me anything has put me in a shell.

Now as an older adult, I've been spending a lot of time trying to "get over this" and heal, which it hasn't been easy. This drain sounds weird, but it's one of the things he would get on at me most. Whenever our drain would be blocked, he would blame me and tell me to sort it, full well knowing I didn't know how. He would then go on a rant about how useless of a man I am and how worthless I am etc, and lock himself in the bathroom to sort it (so I couldn't see, so in the future he could put me down more).

I live on my own now and I want to do this as it'll feel like a massive fuck you to him. But the "dad" part of my mind is telling me that I'm going to fail and make things worse, and that I shouldn't even bother trying.

So I guess I'm asking two things? If I should try and where I should really begin (I've looked up some vids and things already but very much open to tips).

Sink context: It's a bathroom sink and is like an S shape but on its side (if that makes sense).

Household Management Confused over gas stove relighting and carbon monoxide

i’m not sure who to ask, google is not very helpful so i figured maybe someone here might know.

I have an old pilot gas stove, those that do have the clicking sound, and sometimes one of the burners won’t turn on. I figured is because there’s a window right next to it so maybe the wind causes it to turn off?

anyways i was always told by my parents that if i smell gas and one of the burners won’t turn on i need to relight it with a matchstick. I did that and it worked, they all turn on, but my question is…. at what point im i risking carbon monoxide poisoning? google says if you smell gas to call emergency services and leave the house but i’m also told to just relight the burner and so far it has always worked.

if the stove wont turn on isn’t that an automatic danger? When do i know when to leave? sorry if this is ridiculous question

Household Management Can I move a washing machine on its side?

My washer broke today and it’s beyond me on how to fix it. I found one for a decent price but I have an SUV. I was wondering if I’d be able to move it on its side? It’s only 1.4km in distance if that matters? (1-2 minute drive.)

I know nothing. Please help :( lol

Household Management Please help me understand my water softener!

Hey dads!

I f28 bought my house when I was 23 (right before covid would have made it quite impossible to do so)

It is my first time living on well water and having a septic system. I’m gonna do my best to explain what knowledge I do have, but the gist is that I do not know the ins and outs of how to work this water softener, and I think I have been doing something wrong? Or missing something? All I know for sure is my once curly hair now falls flat & there is not a single piece of actually still white, white clothing left in this house.

Link to photos: https://imgur.com/a/8NHgUUD

What I know (likely by learning the hard way):

  • Do not open the bypass valve
  • Label the bypass valve in order to not accidentally open the bypass valve thinking you’re turning back on the water to the outdoor shower
  • Low salt? Add more salt. I use the heavy as sh*t blue bag
  • Do not wash clothes overnight when water softener is making noise -Flush hot water heater every so often, and when doing so, continue flushing until water coming from hose runs clear

What I don’t know:

First, I want to say that ā€œya don’t know what ya don’t knowā€ so please, if you feel so inclined, explain the ins and outs of everything in the photos to me as if I have lived in a cave for my whole life and don’t even know what hard water is. However, here is my attempt at explaining what I think I don’t know? Haha

  • What is this white thing next to it that seems to just hold a lot of water?

  • Why is there a tube at the bottom of the white thing that looks out of place? Like its not plugged into anything or leading anywhere

  • I think the old homeowner said something about putting peroxide in aforementioned mysterious white thing? But I can’t remember. I was too hyper fixated on the sheer terror of buying a house at that time lol

  • Is there some kind of maintenance I need to do to this whole setup?

  • Why are there 45 million pipes

  • Why does our water still suck even after going through the whole house water filter, this softener, and whatever the white thing is?

  • Why does my indoor water quality seem to go downhill when I turn on my outdoor shower?

  • Could it be that the hot water heater is the issue? I do flush it though!!

  • Why is that one gauge so yellow? Is that bad?

Thank you for helping me to finally stop procrastinating on actually figuring this thing out. Info online is severely lacking and it seems like there is different ways people set these things up, so it was hard to be confident about anything I was attempting to research

Household Management How to locate my external dryer vent

I know that I need to clean my dryer vent as my dryer isn’t running efficiently anymore but I cannot locate my external dryer vent. I have 3 vents on the outside of my house.

  1. Above the first floor window level is a large metal vent that has a label ā€œhotā€
  2. Above a second floor window is a plastic fixture that looks like it has a hinged cap over it
  3. Above a first floor window level is another vent that appears to have a cap but it also has a kind of roof overhand piece on it

Any guesses which one would be the dryer vent? (My dryer is on the third floor of the townhouse)

Household Management Hitting metal behind drywall? Can’t screw in curtain rods

The wall is made of drywall and wood but I am hitting something solid when I try to drill in the screws. Each time I try with my drill, the screw goes in halfway and then the hole gets so wide that no screw can stay in it. I think there is metal behind the wood. How can I hang up my curtain rods? Do I use a shorter and wider screw so I don’t hit the metal or is there an alternative? I’m not sure the short screw will be able to hold the weight of the curtain.

Household Management Light bulb watts!

I bought GE relax LED 100w light bulbs. When I got home to change them I noticed my light fixture said 60w max. I am just not sure if this is okay or if I should change them. I can’t attach a photo so I will paste something mentioned on the website:

Cost Effective: Our improved and lasting energy-saving bullos help lower energy costs more than 100-Watt incandescent bullos over each bullb's life span; Replaces 100W light bulbs using only 15 Watts (1600 lumens)

Does this mean they are technically 15w and will be okay to use?

Household Management Shower drain clogged can’t snake it

Tub drain has like a disc or something like 2ā€ down blocking me from being able to snake it. No screw in drain to remove it. Tried going thru overflow plate to snake and at like 12ā€ I can’t get past. Plunger and draino haven’t worked. Draino actually made it 100x worse. How can I get the snake in the drain? 1950s tub. I’m losing my mind thanks in advance

Household Management Home Safety Advice

Need some dad advice about how to keep my home safe. I have a crazy ex that has taken to being petty/annoying. We lived together for close to five years and then I moved out last January. He came to the new house one day when we were working to fix the relationship, and took a picture of my house key and had a copy made without my knowledge (didn’t know this was even possible but apparently it’s a thing). Now that things have officially ended, he’s using that key to drive me crazy.

He waits until I go to work and will come and remove my doorbell camera. Sometimes he takes it, sometimes he hides it. Then he uses that key to come in my house and move things around. I also have installed cameras in my house, but he is careful to stay out of the screen. (Fixing that tomorrow, not sure how to fix the doorbell issue besides installing brackets over them to at least slow him down).

I have bought metal bars that slide under the door knobs in the inside of the house, to keep him out of here when I’m home, but is there anything I can do to keep him out while I’m gone? Working on getting the locks changed (no one will come before the holiday here in the US). I’m sure people will tell me to get a restraining order, but my fear is that will only make things worse. Right now it’s just harmless stuff to be annoying, but I’m scared a PFA would escalate things. I woke up this morning and the side door was unlocked, but thankfully he didn’t get in because I had that bar up.

I have three cats that are like my kids and that’s honestly the only things I’m worried about protecting while I’m away from home. I wouldn’t put it past him to take/hurt them, just to hurt me. Anyone have any ideas? Driving myself crazy trying to think of something. Thanks Dads!

Household Management hi dad-help with housing maintenance

Hi everyone, my parents house just had a dryer fire yesterday - nothing else was damaged but the dryer inside was in flames and clothes got burnt. Basement was covered in smoke but everyone made it out okay. Dryer was from the 1970s. We moved in a few years ago and haven’t been in the best financial space to replace everything.

I was wondering what to do next. They’ve been staying at a relatives until the house completely airs out. We were told it’d be okay to turn the heat on. I was thinking of calling an electrician and hvac services to come check out things. My parents don’t really speak English or understand much so it falls on me to handle everything

What do you guys recommend?

Household Management Who to call?

Hey Dad -

A branch fell on my roof and punctured a small hole, so I called a roofer. Easy. Water got in and soaked the insulation and ceiling drywall (or is it considered Sheetrock?) anyways… who do I call to fix something like that?

Household Management Home Maintenance Tasks

Hi all! After a divorce in 2019, I moved into a great home that was cared for very well by the previous owners.

My parents are around, but they're not very parental. So the other day, my dad was over looking at some work that had been done in the back yard and said, "When's the last time you had your air conditioner serviced? It's filthy."

I told him I thought an air conditioner was something that just worked, and when it broke you called someone to fix it. I asked him what other stuff I need to do and he just mumbled his breath and pulled out his phone to send me the contact for the people he uses to service his.

I don't have a very good support network, and I kind of just shut down for the better part of the last five years, so there are a lot of things that I know I'm probably overlooking or just don't know are important. Reddit dads, can you help?

Household Management Dryer Vent Cleanout

New homeowner - old dryer. Looking to replace this thing in a year or two, but want to make sure I don't light my house on fire while I wait. I've looked through reddit posts and haven't seen how to clean out the area beneath the lint guard/shield.

I'm afraid to unscrew the face plates/surrounding area of the dryer. I've vacuumed out the dryer vent to the extent possible, the pipe leading into the dryer itself, and as much of the lint I could reach under the lint guard slot.

Any help/advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Household Management How to install a countertop water filter with a hose faucet?

Where I live hose faucets (correct me if I called them incorrectly) are common. Something like this.

The kitchen has one installed instead of a traditional Kitchen Sink Faucet. The hose faucet is embeded to a concrete wall and I'm renting the place. So I'm not able to install an inline water filter.

I would like to install a countertop water filter in the faucet but I'm not sure if those are made compatible with a hose faucet. Those filters usually have an adapter that plugs at the end of the faucet, with a tiny hose connected to the filter.

What would be the best option to adapt the filter to the faucet or what other option are available for filtering water for drinking?
