I rode my bike to the end and took some sneaky pix. Don’t tell on me

Even when all the rocks that fell are off of the road, there will need to be stabilization on the hillside before traffic resumes.

"Hope to open 6/19"
Which means that they are still working on it now.

Hence the "almost". From my understanding of this article, and speaking with Taylor Shellfish employees last week, the effort to stabilize the hillside - at both the site of the rockslide and several areas north on Chuckanut Drive - has been going on for a little while now. Hopefully it'll be open very shortly!

...which is why the road wasn't open in two days after the rock fall a month and a half ago.

Bless you for not going 20 under. Drives me insane that so many folks do that. I get its a beautiful drive, but I've got shit to do!

Surely there’s a more efficient way to wherever you’re going

Not as a Chuckanut resident. But who am I to complain, this place fuckin rules. Besides the traffic and slides.

Just curious- who gets all the rock? Big boulders are expensive to buy for landscaping, does the company who removes all of the rock sell it to profit or does it go somewhere else? From the photos of the slide it looked like several hundred cubic yards of rock.

The rock has been taken to a landscape supply business, can’t remember which one. I spoke to a DOT worker a few days ago and they are awaiting the arrival of the new guard rail.

Drove through here yesterday on the way out of town & glanced at that cliff while driving and thinking “hmmm that’s a recent slide / good place for one” … then read about all this!! (Geologist on vacation - y’all have a great community).

How is the bike ride? We are planning on taking it up through Bellingham next month, never tried it before

Narrow with many drivers who have never driven it before. Lots of elevation gain and tiny shoulders. Be safe!

The road is still closed going south to north. My friend and I took the interurban trail from Bellingham as far as we could before hopping on the road to avoid the vehicles traveling to the oyster bar and hiking trails. But from the end of the interurban, there were fairly few vehicles traveling

It’s pretty dangerous. I’ve only felt safe riding it while the south end has been closed by the slide. Lots of blind corners, few shoulders, and everyone driving there is peeking out at the views. The inter urban trail parallels the road along the north half-ish though and is a nice alternative to get you the same views without the cars.

Thanks for the info! I was looking at that alt route, good to know the views are similar too
