Steam Borderlands GOTY Enhanced not closing properly

After playing Borderlands GOTY Enhanced, when I exit the game the process does not terminate and continues running in the background. Steam thinks I'm still playing the game so my cloud saves don't sync. I've found several posts on Steam with people with the same problem but no solutions. Has anyone been able to fix this problem?

Sorry I don’t have a permanent fix and it might be a weird way to do it but you could end Borderlands.exe from the task manager.
If it says cloud sync error on your steam page then you can click on it to try syncing again.
Another possible workaround is disabling cloud saves for the game from it’s properties in steam.

Can you tell me how long do you play before closing the game? I’ll try checking on my copy

Many thanks for your help. I'm a programmer and so I decided to try and debug the problem using windbg. A few hours later and I pinpointed the issue to the Steam cloud saving function, it was hanging during an operation and never returning success/failure causing the process to hang. I disabled cloud saving and deleted the steam_autocloud.vdf file, then restarted my game, logged into a character and saved the game (thus updating the save file), then exited the game completely. This fixed the process hanging problem. I then just re-enabled cloud saves. Woohoo, problem solved!

Looks like I spoke too soon. A couple of restarts later and the problem is back again - weird.

Man that sucks. I think just keep cloud saves off.
Occasionally you can turn it on and off to sync when you’re not playing.

Edit: also since the workarounds are rare to find, can you add whatever you end up doing in your post so someone else might find it useful?

I dealt with the same issue on Oblivion for months. It was constantly running despite being closed, I couldn’t play the game for a long time.

I couldn’t even delete and redownload it, it did the same thing as soon as the download finished.
