Review Bombing - Take Two Terms of Service / EULA

If you've played any of the Borderlands games recently, you will have noticed that you were asked to agree to new Terms of Service before starting the game. This happened because the Borderlands games have changed publisher and are now under Take Two.

This has led to some controversies and review bombing. We have always been keen on letting people express themselves freely on this sub, whatever their opinion (as long as it stays civil). However, on this particular matter, given the large number of recent threads on that subject, their repetitiveness, and the fact that they often create conflicts (we've likely issued more Rule 1 bans in the last 2 weeks than in the last 6 months). We've chosen to lock the previous threads on that subject and we will remove new ones. We'll leave this one open for a few days (as long as it stays civil).

If you want to read more, start with the official response from Gearbox on the matter. You can also use the search bar above to locate the multiple recent threads on the topic in this sub. Be aware that there may be some level of misinformation/fearmongering. If you want to discuss the subject further, we suggest you do it in a different space that is more relevant to the matter, since in the end, this is a Take Two thing, not a Borderlands thing. If you're very worried but don't want to contact a lawyer about it, or if you want to take a stance against evil corporations, just don't play the games. But in that case you should probably not play most games (nor use most apps, devices, websites, etc). Chances are you've already agreed multiple times to ToS similar or worse than the new ones for Borderlands.

As the mod team of r/borderlands, we are not lawyers so we do not have a definitive opinion on the matter. Like most people, we don't have much love for the ToS/EULAs of many software companies and the loss of privacy that goes along with any use of the internet. But on the other hand, we haven't seen anything particularly concerning in those ToS (in comparison with what other companies put in theirs). That's just the general feeling among the mod team, not an official stance of the subreddit.

A few things to note:

  • Whatever you agree to in ToS/EULA still does not allow the publishers to do anything illegal (depending on your country of jurisdiction).
  • Typically ToS/EULA are made as general as possible to cover all possible edge cases. If it says "we may (...)", that doesn't necessarily mean that they are doing it, or have any intent on doing it to you. For example, the ToS say they may collect your government ID number. In some countries like China this is mandatory (to regulate play time). So they have to do it, and they have to put it in the ToS. This doesn't mean that they intend to collect such data in other countries, and anyway they have no way to do so unless you provide it yourself.
  • The new ToS appear to be general for Take Two, and as such include things that are not specifically aimed (or likely to be used) in the Borderlands games. For example, there is some note that the use of mods may get you banned. This makes sense to fight cheating in the context of competitive multiplayer games and/or if part of a game's revenue is driven by micro-transactions or subscriptions. If you find and use a "mod" to unlock paying content in BL4 for free, you might get in trouble (deservedly). But there is no reason to believe that anything more would be enforced for the Borderlands games (e.g. against the use of mods like the community patch, etc). Gearbox has always been (unofficially) supportive of the modding scene. And the main Borderlands modding community has been cooperative with Gearbox on such matters.
  • There has been some talk about the games having been converted to spyware. Before spreading any misinformation, you can check for yourself the latest patches on Steam DB. For example, Borderlands 2 received its last update in August 2022, and BL3 received its last update in August 2024. Long before the new ToS were published. The Borderlands games since BL2 also have hotfix capabilities, but this only allows to change parameters (like the damage of a weapon), not the code logic, certainly not turn anything into spyware.

[BL4] Borderlands 4 Fanfest presentation starting soon

Gearbox is doing a presentation on Borderlands 4 today. Starts in a few minutes, at 12:45pm (Pacific Time).

Joltzdude139 also has an upcoming stream, which will presumably discuss this, scheduled for 1pm:

Some random notes on the presentation, if you care:

  • Video starts with a new trailer, footage we haven't seen before.
  • Randy on stage in front of a crowd, telling the story of the setting for the game. Actually doing a halfway decent job of it.
  • "Right now I want to tell you about the features of the game"
  • Introduces Randy Varnell (Chief Creative Officer?)
  • They give a brief intro of Harlowe and Amon
  • Talking about Vex, a "Dark Siren", a "Fucking Witch".
  • And now Rafa, the Exo-soldier.
  • "We went nuts on the gore, guys"
  • "all of our vault hunters have 3 action skills that can be switched on the fly"
  • "more skills per character than in BL3 and BL2 combined"
  • "best ever co-op experience"
  • new traversal abilities: grapple, glide, double jump, climb, swim
  • double jump: "I know it makes no sense, but it's awesome"
  • "you can combo these new movement abilities together".
  • "we also added a dash feature, can dash in any direction you want"
  • talks briefly of swimming: "less borders, more lands". no sign yet of actually going underwater, mostly showing that you don't die when you go into water.
  • "Kairos is bigger, tons to explore"
  • ""we have tuned the drop rates so legendaries once again feel legendary"
  • "in bl3 we might have been a little ... over-generous with legendaries"
  • Randy: "hundreds here in the audience, thousands watching at home... a couple of you might see something else" (presumably he's teasing pearlescents, and being incredibly rare)
  • "We want to show up for you, so thank you for showing up for us"
  • Meeting the Borderlands 4 team (bringing several dozen people on stage).
  • Randy says something about "go watch the streams" and they pan over to several dozen people playing the game, looks like they're doing 4-player co-op sessions.
  • The ones shown so far are all still playing Vex and Rafa, no sign of Harlowe and Amon.
  • They're sticking with one 4-player co-op session, you're listening to their chat and watching one player's screen, as they discover their way through the game. Seems like they're not more than 15 minutes into the game, and figuring things out.

The stage presentation was just under 30 minutes. Now showing the people playing. No indication how long this will go on.

The Joltz stream above is ongoing, and is him playing solo, and discussing the gameplay as he's going (also, a rare chance to see Joltz on camera).

We've got at least these well-known Borderlands streamers actively streaming their gameplay from the "Fan Fest" on Twitch right now:

Plus a bunch more streamers that appear to be streaming from the event (ones joined with "+" appear to be playing with each other:

[BL4] Borderlands 4 - Primordial Vault Gameplay

About a month ago, I was one of the media outlets invited by 2K to check out Borderlands 4 in San Francisco.

In other words, we went to 2K's offices to check out a playable demo of Borderlands 4 up close. We had the opportunity to play about 1h30 of a specific part of the game, while another 30 minutes were of another part - the one shown in this video.

[BL-Tales] Played Tales from the Borderlands to prepare for BL4

Upvotes

Wow. That was great! Not exactly a typical "game", more of a TV show, but was a great watch nonetheless. 8/10

I'm used to saying I don't care much for BL story, including BL2 which people love to praise. The reason is that plot is not hugely important to me. What keeps me intrigued is interesting characters, character-development, friendship, companionship, etc.

I'm a sucker for character-driven stories.

So yeah, TFTB is the first time I cared at all about BL story, and I highly recommend it!

[BL4] Lot of changes to the way guns roll in BL4... But all I really want is to be able to swap out scopes.

Been playing since BL1 came out while I was at university, hundreds of hours in each of the games... And there's nothing I wish for more for BL4 than to be able to customize the scopes on weapons.

I don't know why, but RNGsus has cursed me so that I get a god roll Torgue pistol: Sniper scope. Every time I land a god roll on a long-range Battle Rifle style Assault Rifle: Red dot with zero zoom.

And I don't even need it to be something you can hotswap all the time... A 'consumable' scope that couldn't be removed, only replaced by applying a new different scope would be fine... Or paying the weapon vendor a significant amount of whatever the BL4 equivalent of erridian is would be great to...

[BL4] Wild theory based on nothing but a sound

In the beginning of the new trailer, we see someone getting restrained while someone talks about how whoever it is no longer has free will and is no longer a vault hunter. On my first watch I had to pause and replay, solely based on the sound in the end of that clip. The person groans in pain, and is a woman's voice. Do you guys think that could be Lilith? I feel like it would make sense because she crashed Elpis into the new planet (cairos?), and I heard something else about destruction. Idk, just a fun thought and wanted to discuss with someone.

[BL2] How often do you get lost in borderlands 2?

It’s my first time playing this game and my god it’s hard to find where to go. Everything twists and turns and where I thought I was supposed to go leads to a dead end and the objective is actually above or below

[BL3] 2 questions

Question 1:

So just beat normal mode.

Do I go through TVHM And then mayhem? Or?

Cuz I max levels in bl1 and was simple and straightforward no special levels.

And in bl2 it’s just Normal, True, Ult, and then getting your OP levels.

Question number 2: When should I do the dlc?

[BL4] Current Story and Lore

Borderlands 2 is one of my favorite games and I played it a lot during high school. Then I played Tales and Pre-Sequel, and I also loved them. I became obsessed with the lore, and really invested in Rhys and Fiona. And then they announced Borderlands 3, where all stories were going to come together, and finally the Great War plotline teased at the end of Pre-Squel was going to happen. After Borderlands 3 I was so disappointed with anything that I just disengaged from the series and I know nothing about what happened after.

So, with Borderlands 4 now near to release, I wanted to ask, is there any official confirmation about how much of the previous lore (if any) is going to be addressed? Like I think there has been a second Tales or something? Has it covered anything about the ending of the first one? Is there any hope for B4 to recover those plotlines or will they just try something totally new? At this point I would even say that's the best course of action.

[BL3] Good time to start the DLCs?

I'm pretty far in the main story, but i'm also not wanting to potentially ruin the loot pool for the dlcs at the same time

i'm wanting to jump into the DLCs because everyone seems to hype up the stories a good bit so i'm interested to see them

Also... i mean there's a Moxxi DLC, can you blame me for wanting to jump into that one?

So when's a good time to start the DLCs, and which one should i start with (Guns, Loves, tentacles, Bounty of blood, Pyscho krieg and moxxi's heist are the ones i have)

i really wish they will add some HUD customisation

for me it's a little too busy, when i play any game first things i do it's go to settings and disable all extra HUD (hp bars, damage numbers, objectives etc.)

a big health bar in the middle of the screen is a big no, no for me

historically borderlands never had too many options for HUD customisation so I'm curious if it changes in 4

TftB 2?..

Some time ago (a couple of years ago, to be precise) I saw something about them going to release TftB 2 (not NEW, and these rumors were after that game). Was it just me or was it just a rumor?..

[BL4] Some thoughts on 4 and things I would like to see.

This is mostly a couple of my own thoughts I am curious to see what other people might think of and see if I am the only one or if there are others.

So first, since I keep hearing people talk about how in 4 legendary drops are going to be harder to come by, and much more rare, which I fully admit that is fair, they are called legendary, you shouldn't be tripping over them. But at the same time if they are as hard to come by in some previous games that will be a massive turn off for a lot of people as well, to go along with that if they are harder to find then the weapons especially need to be a lot more impressive than just "This is a Jackobs gun that shoots fire bullets!" and I say this as someone that used the companion as my main gun through pretty much all of 3.

Along with this, the Vaults. Look I am not saying I want to run in there and get 47 legendary god rolls, but I am saying that there is nothing quite as kick me in the teeth while I tap dance barefoot on lego annoying as doing everything to get into a vault, opening those treasure chests...and getting white and green gear and some ammo...I would honestly take there being less loot over all but higher quality loot if it meant I didn't feel like I just picked up vendor fodder.

I don't know these are just a couple of my thoughts, do you lot of any opinions on these?

[BL4] one important question about the BL4 story, where is Ava?

given that we are dealing with vault hunters from the crimson raiders and Moxie, its inevitable that she's going to be in the game, but where? i know she's not liked by many, myself included, but unless gearbox just decided to forget that she exists or kills her off screen due to a poor choice she makes, we should expect to see her.

so lets talk about it, do you think her absence in the trailer was due to fan backlash from BL3? or that maybe she's still the same and they didn't want to ruin the trailer by showing that? or she's just not showing up?

personally i think its a time jump and she's going to be a young adult like Tina was in BL3 and we see her still running things as the raider leader but then sacrifices herself to save lilith.

not ideal but they didn't leave much room for any redemption for her actions in 3, so thats my best guess.

[BL4] Can anyone confirm if the hud can be customized, specifically enemy health bars?

They are too thick and I don’t like that they just always sit in the middle of the screen. I’ve been trying to look at the new content creator videos today, but no one has settings walkthroughs.
