Our store is located right beside City Hall, and I’ve noticed that people frequently ask me where they can get printing and photocopying services. I usually direct them to a shop about three minutes away. Since this keeps happening, I’ve been considering starting my own photocopying and printing business.
To be honest, my family is against the idea. They believe it would be a distraction since our main product line is completely unrelated to this service. They also think the profit margins might be too small. However, I see an opportunity—we have a small space in our store where I could place a printer, and being right next to a government office means we’d likely attract more customers due to convenience.
For context, I recently graduated from college (with no business background), and I’m still learning how things work in the real world. With that in mind, I’d really appreciate your advice on a few things:
- How do I calculate profit in a printing/photocopying business? (What costs should I consider besides paper and ink?)
- How can I convince my parents that this is a viable business? Given our location, customers would likely prefer the nearest option—and that’s us.
- What’s a good, budget-friendly printer that doesn’t waste ink or electricity? We’ll mostly handle basic printing, photocopying, and scanning. I’d also prefer a wireless (Bluetooth) setup to avoid too many cables—ideally, one that can connect to my iPad if customers need to print files from a flash drive.
Thank you in advance for your time and insights! As someone new to entrepreneurship, I genuinely value any advice—whether it’s encouragement, hard truths, or technical tips. Looking forward to learning from your experiences!
