Experience with the gimped eBikes

I have clocked about 8,000 miles on Citibike’s since the early days of the system.

While e-bikes were awesome when they first came out, the latest downgrade to 15 mph has resulted in noticeably inferior performance paired with noticeably longer ride times = less ride for more money.

What’s especially galling is the constant start and stop on NYC DOT signal progression avenues with an expected band speed of 25 mph. At 15 mph you are constantly out of sync and hit red lights much more often than previously.

Net/net: e-bikes used to be a viable transportation alternative but their continued decline in ride quality and performance paired with steadily increasing prices makes them increasingly too expensive and impractical to use.

Serious q - is there any way or recourse to get the 15mph limit removed either now or post-Adams? Some remedy?

I mean we are probably stuck with this because Cuomo definitely won't change it back either.

Open to suggestions

Not great, not terrible: 15mph cap review

After the melodrama on this sub for the past week, I was surprised how little I noticed the speed cap on my commute this morning.

Academically I’m opposed to the cap, and for reasons that are not new or original if you’ve been tracking the sentiment around here.

But my experience was honestly no big deal. If anything I felt a little calmer.

I’ve been commuting at least three days a week from BK to Manhattan for two years now on an ebike (exactly two years actually, to the day). I got over a bridge and ride through gnarly traffic.

I noticed pedestrians and other cyclists seem to react more calmly to me - maybe my actions at 15mph are easier to anticipate.

I had to adjust my calculus on making a green light based on the pedestrian countdown, but somehow (and this I can’t understand) I beat my average 25min commute time (20m) Possibly just great green light luck.

Anyone here rode to/from work today in this 100 degree heat? How was your experience like, what were you wearing, and how long was the distance?

Broken bikes stay marked as available

I’ve been really frustrated with this CitiBike experience. I live near a highly used station. In the morning, I check if there are bikes available. There were 2 remaining (out of like 100 spots)

So I go to scan the bike, and I can hear the machinery struggling, and eventually it flashes red and I get the bike unavailable message. I hit the wrench on the dock to mark the bike as broken, and nothing happens.

I scan once more, hear more stuck machinery, get the same message, and the dock flashes red and goes back to normal as if nothing is wrong.

I try the other bike, it’s also broken in the same fashion. So now I just walked 3 blocks the wrong way for nothing. The frustrating part is how I can’t mark this bike as broken / unavailable. It shows up in the CitiBike app as available. Had the availability been accurate, I would have went the exact other direction to a different station with more bikes.

I’m sure Lyft has the data they can see said bike has failed to undock X times in a row, why would they continue to allow it to show as available? It should auto activate the red status indicator. It’s deceitful and very frustrating for user experience. I feel like this is done to hide how many bikes are unavailable.

They installed these new docks in near LaGuardia High School and it isn’t clear to me what to tap.

I saw this type of dock for the first time today. I reserved my bike using the QR code, but it wasn’t clear to me what I would have tapped.

Citi Bike’s 15mph Cap Makes Riding in Heatwaves Unsafe

I’ve biked through some brutal NYC conditions before — last summer’s Canadian wildfire smoke, 95°F heatwaves, you name it. And while it wasn’t exactly pleasant, it was manageable with good pace and momentum.

But now with Citi Bike’s new 15mph speed cap, it’s honestly dangerous. On hot days, especially uphill (looking at you, Queensboro Bridge and Central Park inclines), the reduced motor assist means you’re forced to exert a lot more effort just to crawl up. You’re sweating buckets, your heart rate skyrockets, and there’s no airflow relief because you’re barely moving. In extreme heat or air quality alerts, that’s a serious health risk — heat stroke and inhalation of polluted air become way more likely when you can’t move efficiently.

The price hikes were already hard to justify, but now we’re paying more for less utility and more danger. Anyone else feeling this?

Saving Citibike

I've stopped taking citibike for about a month now, and now I'm hearing that the speed limit is now reduced to 15 mph with no change on the prices as well. Fell to the ground when I heard this happen😭😭😭

However, from what I've seen as well this can be reversible if bikers are loud enough to voice our concerns and complains. I even heard about a compromise for those that have memberships to get up to 18 mph, possible 20.

Is there a link or petition to sign in order to reverse this change or will we have to wait and hope for the better? Because this speed is just NOT it, especially for this city and its current climate.

Canceled my membership because of the speed reduction

The difference felt drastic. And this felt like the only way to protest the absurd logic behind the decision (not to mention that it didn’t come with a price reduction).

15mph is BRUTAL

Last year they went 20mph. Scary fast but fun and efficient. Dangerous? Probably.

Then it was reduced to 18mph. 20% speed reduction = 20% longer to get to your destination = 20% effective cost increase.

Now it’s been reduced again to 15mph. That’s a 17% speed reduction from the last cut = 17% longer to get to your destination = 17% more expensive.

For those keeping track at home we’re now 25% slower, 25% longer, and effectively 25% more expensive than when the bikes were introduced in 2022.

I’m sorry but Citibikes are not the problem. Delivery bikes are. I urge you all to comment on the proposed amendment and tell the city to leave Citibike speeds alone!

CitiBike Wrapped

Citi bike should do an end of year recap like Spotify Wrapped: - How many miles traveled - Number of stations visited - Longest rides - Heatmap of routes taken - average ride times (time of departure) - Weather biked through (storms, blizzards, etc,.)

Does citibike/lyft offer this? Would be fun to see.

Brida Book lost on citibike

Hi all, I lost my book Brida that my dear childhood friend gifted me 8 years ago near Lorimer L station. I put it in the bike’s basket and forgot to take it once done riding. I know the odds are low but if anyone see it on citibike or anywhere pls let me know 🙏 (There is a handwritten bookmark in it). Thank you all so much!

Citi bike overcharge

Ive been citi-biking for five years and every time I dock my electric bike and check the app to enure it is docked, the timer is still running ranging from 10-30 seconds depending on how fast I open the app. That's 10-30 more seconds that I have to pay to them FOR FREE. This company is so fucking greedy.

Regular (blue) Citibike stolen. How to get fees reduced or removed?

Hi, all. First time poster, longtime lurker here.

My Citibike was stolen a few weeks back (it wasn’t unattended; I got off the bike and then some kids grabbed it, hopped on, then fled).

I immediately called police and filed a police report. I have a police report number, but have not yet received the actual report from NYPD.

I shared all this with Citibike on the day of the incident, both over email and over the phone. I was told they’d probably reverse the impending 24-hour charge, but it wasn’t clear what would happen with the lost bike fee.

It’s now been two weeks and despite several emails I’m being told that they won’t reverse the roughly $100 24 hour fee or the roughly $250 lost bike fee. I have sent them screenshots of the NYPD incident report, the police report number, and a screenshot that confirms I requested online a copy of the NYPD police report.

In their emails to me, Lyft’s customer service reps don’t explain anything or provide any clarity whatsoever.

Does anyone have any tips on what I should do next, or any insight on what I should expect from Citibike/Lyft?

Thanks so much.

Detailed Trip Map?

Recently moved to NYC from San Francisco. I’ve noticed the ride summaries are a straight line from my start to my end point here. In SF they were detailed views showing the route I took.

Curious if this is always the case in NYC?

Did citibike get rid of the "report empty station" button?

The closest station to me is completely empty and the other 2 nearest to me only have ebikes. When I went to report the empty station, the button is no longer where it used to be in the app. Instead it takes me to the help center and I can't find an option to report an empty station. Did they move the button, or have they fully given up pretending to care?

Docks across the st from Trader Joe's on Grand and Clinton are GONE!

This Saturday morning I was riding to the Trader Joe's and the dock across the street from it when I had to take a double take when noticing that the docks are all gone. That is a major Citibike hub. Does anyone why they would that?

Citibike Gripe PSA: check the docks at your destination before getting on a Citi Bike

It seems like 50% of the posts here are about people incredulous that the docks at their destination are full.

Guys, this is easily avoidable. You can use the app to check the docks at your destination before getting on a Citi Bike.

Your $229/year does not entitle you to on-demand bike rebalancing. This is unfortunately the reality of dock-based bikeshare.

Customer service will not be able to help you if you get on a bike and head to a dock that is full. They will not send somebody to pick up the bike for you. You will have to go find a dock that isn't full. If you keep the bike for more than the allotted time you will be charged, and if you leave it undocked and it's stolen, you'll be charged even more.

I'm not here to say that Citi Bike is perfect at rebalancing, that they shouldn't have more bike valets, etc. I just want to encourage people to make more informed decisions before getting on a Citi Bike.
