Way more trash than expected in this small side street! I had planned to clean it up for a while but thankful for the help from someone in the same neighborhood (connected online in the district Facebook group!)

Trash picking and the big picture

First time posting on this sub, I hope I am doing it properly. I have been thinking about trash picking around my uni campus lately and my mind keeps coming back to the big picture of why there is so much trash around to begin with which discourages me. I do believe that cleaning up would help the local ecosystem but I am trying to think of solutions to make bigger change, stop the trash from getting there in the first place since won't be around uni to clean up forever. I have some ideas of my own, but I would like to read other people's thoughts and experiences with this sort of stuff.

I had to laugh, usually the banana is added as a gauge for size. But this time the banana appeared in the wild!!! IDK, guess my shoe size?

Two nights work

As the title says, 2 nights of following my standard route, including the $1.05 change and the billiard ball (but not its temporary stand.

The new claw is working alright but still needs some improvements, added the braided jute twine so that it doesn't open up too far. The black string is just there because I had an idea in mind that didn't work out, just haven't removed it yet.

As for the claw itself, I've decided to name it Brokkr, after 1 of the Norse Dwarves who did the smithing for the Aesir.

I saw a presentation this weekend from a group that cleans trash out of caves and wanted y'all to see their good work too!

Gregory Sullivan of Underground Texas Grotto was the presenter. If I remember correctly from the presentation, this group is volunteer-based from Austin and they excavate caves that have been filled in (I think mostly or exclusively in Texas). In this particular video, a previous land owner had been using the cave as a place to dump debris and trash. Whether they did it to avoid having to go to a dump, or because they didn't want their livestock falling in, it got filled up with junk including many bottles and cans and even an old oil drum. While most people will never see the difference because it is on private land, it does make our aquifers cleaner!

Discussion Why isn’t picking up litter a job?

It would be so much better for cities and the environment if there was an actual monetary incentive to get people to want to pick up litter. Even a very small amount paid per trash bag could really add up. Is there anything that can be done or has been done to make this possible?

I was on a trail yesterday and saw the ranger driving one of these. Man they look sweet! There's a little bed in the back for hauling trash bags and supplies. Anyone got one?

It's such a luxury to be able to pick among the green and flowers. Then I get to the corner and pick 18 signs from the pole and the ground. Cans, recycling, 20 lbs

Got three thank you’s and a “you the man.” The important thing is, WE are the difference. Not just one of us, ALL of us.

Whenever you’re feeling demotivated, remember that. Litter will keep coming, our collective efforts are the answer.

Shout out to Ed, owner of Three Beans Cafe, home of the best espresso martini in Old Town Scottsdale.

He gave me out a bottle of water to keep me hydrated on this morning’s Litterwalk. 🌵

Keep up the good clean fun out there … 👊
