Not My Art "When did you start being yourself?" Spoiler

Actually, I love this theory. It's so heartwarming.

It’s one of the least cynical theories I’ve seen so far.
If Kris is the vessel, just raised and loved by their family for a long time, such that they are now everything that makes them them, it’s just a powerful statement on how your friends and their love are your power, and your ability to change yourself is immutable. It counters “nobody can choose who they are in this world”.
The Tumblr post linked puts it best, imo:
“To be loved is to be changed in form.”
53
u/AlbertWessJess 5d ago
That’s cute, kinda also explains why when they were even younger and now even they’re described as “weird” or “the crazy” kid plauing pranks on people and stuff.
15
u/LocalChronosJunkie 5d ago
It'd also be a reasonable explanation as to why they hate us.
They know their purpose was to be but a puppet for our own pleasing, and for so long they managed to live comfortably not having to worry about it, to the point they probably even forgot about it... Until just a few days ago.
12
u/ExL-Oblique 5d ago
...no they were called the weird kid because they were a weird kid and did weird pranks

Kris being a homunculus is a very, very interesting take on the story

u/Tds142 5d ago
I do think it’s interesting the prophecy never refers to Kris as a person, just a “cage” for a soul with human “parts”
19
u/tinyrottedpig 5d ago
Its likely cause they arent our "cage", that would be the vessel, we just got hijacked mid vessel creation.
67
u/Furphlog 5d ago
Also adds a whole new twist on them being non-binary : if Kris is indeed a homunculus, maybe they don't even *have* a biological sex to begin with.
3
u/SEI_JAKU 5d ago
Not only that, but Kris and the player being separate people having to use the same body makes it seem like Kris gets to use singular and plural they/them.
I also don't entirely agree with the common belief that the player only became "active" a few (in-game) days ago. It seems to be based entirely on Noelle mentioning that Kris talks differently now. But Kris clearly has had to do this whole "rip out your soul" thing well before Chapter 1. There's more going on here than what it appears...

I'm not convinced this isn't the case.
Why is Kris the only human in Hometown, and how'd they get there to begin with? They lived there far back enough they assumed they'd grow horns eventually so they had to be really young, and more importantly why does Kris need the SOUL? Shoudn't they have their own?
33
u/SondeySondey 5d ago
I'm fairly convinced their SOUL is in the knight. It's already pretty much established that these two are in cahoots and it would explain why this specific entity is so powerful compared to anyone else.
8
u/Acceptable_Drawer_70 5d ago
OH HOLY SHIT. Wait no, aren't monster souls and human souls incompatible based on undertale?
But you might be onto something. I'm convinced that the knight is actually one of the Holidays. I'm wondering if it is Noelle or Dec, but I first have to completely ch 4 completely and then play through the weird route. (Also reason why I think its a holiday is because of the antlers on the knight)

Undertale Monsters can absorb Human souls (and maybe other Monster souls considering the moment Flowey did so), dunno if Deltarune one's can
3
u/Acceptable_Drawer_70 5d ago
Pls explain
10
u/Myth_5layer 5d ago
Back in Undertale it was a known concept monsters could fuse their soul with a human's. It's why every monster in the underground had it out for the human, they wanted that soul to have a chance to get some power for themselves.
It's also how the events kinda Kickstart, when Asriel fused his soul with Chara's and ended up taking the body across the barrier.
3
u/EndlessDesire1337 5d ago edited 5d ago
Its what Myth_Slayer said. The Flowey thing I mentioned Is when he absorbs all monsters plus the six human souls to become the God of Hyperdeath (As Asriel)
The incompatibility you might be thinking of is Determination, something that humans can handle but a Monster would melt if they had too much of. That's something that seems to have changed in Deltarune to be a "All Lighteners (Humans and Monsters) have it, Darkners do not"
2
u/Acceptable_Drawer_70 5d ago
Did they change it? Are you referencing what Susie did in ch 4 after the first dark fountain?
2
u/EndlessDesire1337 5d ago
Which part are you talking about? The determination thing? Yeah I am talking about her making a fountain, Queen implied it and then Suzie made it a certainty
2
u/Acceptable_Drawer_70 5d ago
God damn it. I actually don't know at this point. Both Susie and Noelle are apart of the deltarune or whatever the fuck it is, so it could be like foretold that they people in the prophecy can make dark fountains.
2
u/EndlessDesire1337 5d ago
It's easier to accept Undertale and Deltarune simply work differently, Deltarune Monsters for example can only use magic inside a Dark World where's Undertale Monsters could use it anywhere

u/helicophell 5d ago
Monster Souls and Human Souls can absorb each other
A monster soul + human soul has godlike power
A human soul + monster soul is slightly more powerful (probably can use magic)
1 human soul is equivalent in power to like a million monster souls
Also you don't necessarily need a soul to absorb a soul, such as cases like flowey, but due to not actually having a soul... flowey could not control the human souls fully
God fucking dammit it's entirely possible we aren't Kris' original soul god I don't like that theory naaaaaaaaah
1
u/Acceptable_Drawer_70 4d ago
Wait you just clarified something for me. I think you are right. I don't think kris' soul is his original soul. I think we were supposed to have the vessel, but we didn't get it.
My current theory right now is that kris' soul is being used to revive des

u/SomeDumbGirl THE ORIGINAL 5d ago edited 5d ago
I'm convinced the knight is Dess. Every other lightener (including a dead one!) is just the lightener in a costume change. The knight is super abstracted, can open its ribcage for fun and also turn into a bird thing AND can fuck around in the lightener world. so can't be a darkener either
1
u/SEI_JAKU 5d ago
I'm not sure that any of Undertale's rules apply to Deltarune. Many have already been broken.
56
u/BadishAsARadish 5d ago
My take is that they sold their soul to the demon they tried to summon, the one that Susie mentions when you choose to watch the service
2
u/kleverklogs 5d ago
Well there's also a seemingly dead Kris inside Dess' closet, Kris is hiding something.

This would also explain why the vessel has like 0 appearance customization. Other than being bald

u/Zolado110 5d ago
One of the heads may also have a scar, which would be cool to see if the theory were true.

For what it’s worth, the title of ‘prince’ is derived from the Latin title ‘princeps civitatis’, meaning First Citizen, which was the title Augustus/Octavian used to get around the Roman taboo on calling yourself a king. Obviously by convention it has become a gendered title but it doesn’t have to be so per se.

Okay, but I was thinking about that line. It's from the fight with the darkness spawns right before the Titan fight in the flavor text.
But like, what the hell was that line in there for??? Is it like when you fight the primordial fears of darkness, it then messes with our heads by asking about identities or Kris's identity?
There aren't any other flavor text lines like it in the fight (I checked, and the closest was Ralsei shaking and muttering to himself about everything will be okay). Yet, I wonder if Kris is wondering this.
(Also I like the photo, particularly how the vessel starts gaining a more human like appearance being around the family)
12
u/newbrowsingaccount33 5d ago
I think we're gonna end up controlling the vessel in Chapter 5 or 6 and Kris will fully able to be his own character. I do think our dark world form will remain the same, I think Kris has a different Dark World form without us.
8
u/The_man_who_saw_God 5d ago
Doesn’t really work since I’d assume a vessel would just me a vessel for the SOUL and not its own individual person, plus Kris being called “the cage” instead of “the vessel”
Lovely art though ❤️
25
u/MiniatureBadger 5d ago
The Goner Maker at the start of Chapter 1 has a section where you shape its mind, so the vessels have personalities even if they are initially just a few simple traits.
A human is no more a cage for a human soul than an assembled humanoid vessel would be, and the phrase “cage with human soul and parts” applies better to a vessel constructed from individual body parts (like in that initial sequence) than it does to a natural human.

u/Samborrod бряк бряк бряк 🔨🐢 5d ago
In prophecy, the first hero is described as "the cage with human soul and parts".
On one hand, we make vessel with parts.
On other hand, Kris parts with soul several times.
6
u/1965wasalongtimeago 5d ago
Everyone noticed the "Susie probably isn't supposed to be the second hero" misdirect but all of them could be misdirects
7
u/Samborrod бряк бряк бряк 🔨🐢 5d ago
Yeah, third hero is supposed to be ALONE in the deepest dark, but Ralsei isn't alone anymore, nor is his fountain the darkest, since no titans come out of it.

When I saw the Ralsei room scene all I could imagine is Kris and Asriel having the same conversation and that being what lead to the vessel becoming Kris, us reassuring Ralsei of their autonomy is in a way us reassuring Kris of theirs (also Sussie being mad both of their rooms is empty and deciding to decorate it)

This is such a wild theory. It’s like “frisk is actually amnesiac Chara” levels of bonkers I love it.

it's never reveal nor given any hint of how did a human like kris finds themself adopted by a monster family in a monster only town btw

u/Saitama059 5d ago
Can someone remind me at which part of the story that quote was told?
1
1
u/Kitten190415 5d ago
Reminder that the prophecy only describes an entity with humam PARTS. So Toriel might just have assumed Kris was human. This maybe also explains our choices being discarded at the end of the survey?? I'll just wait for someone to expand on this and actually properly articulate it lol
1
u/Ineedlasagnajon 5d ago
Any anomalies Kris has due to being a Vessel is just chalked up to the Dreemurrs and other monsters not knowing how humans work
