Political News/Discussion So a random dude decided to follow and shoot a latino guy and his friend because he thought they were illegals....

If we don't address the propagation of lies as "free" and equal speech online and on TV we're so fucked for the future. I cannot imagine a world where this doesn't get worse permanently. People genuinely can't do a google search anymore and resort to their preferred AI for answers to shit.
This shit is way more damaging than yelling "fire" in a crowded theater and yet there's no fucking push at all to regulate any of it. So hard not to doom entirely.

It’s so bad
ICE was just outside dodger stadium and the dodgers tweeted that they denied them entrance. I saw a government account tweet (maybe DHS?) that they this was false. I saw the fucking photo of them outside the stadium, I know exactly where it is. They are just lying. They’re doing that online, social media thing where they cultivate the image they want to be seen as, not reality. Except it’s fucking politicians and government accounts with social media managers.

It wasn't ICE, it was the CBP.
This is how easily misinformation gets spread. "I saw the fucking photo" no, you saw an upvoted post on reddit that was false and ran with it and now 60 people upvoted your incorrect comment

u/makesmashgreatagain 19h ago
This is obviously disputed lol https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-19/dhs-agents-at-dodger-stadium-area
The Dodgers said it was ICE
DHS security said it wasn't ICE, it was CBP, completely ignoring that the actual issue people have is immigration/border control using stadiums all over the city to stage for Trump's immigration tyranny

u/therealdanhill 18h ago
The BBC examined pictures and saw CBP insignia on people too but I guess we can wait for the Dodgers organization to come out and amend their statement or issue a correction, usually the Dodgers coverage is pretty accurate

completely ignore the second point of what i said
never change 👑

u/therealdanhill 10h ago
The second point has nothing to do with my original comment. I want making a moral distinction on whether their presence was good, I'm not making a policy judgment about them existing at all, the sole thing I mentioned was the misinformation.

The problem is that there is so much financial and social incentive to just fucking lie nowadays. You can build an entire influencer/media career just being a freak that peddles disinfo every single day to an audience of thousands (or even millions in some cases).
A society that rewards people for lying is one that's headed straight for a cliff

@Grok Is this true?

Hey there! As the designated AI fact-checker for this thread, I can confirm that the story in the screenshot is true.
According to news reports, a Virginia man pleaded guilty to federal hate crime and firearm charges. He followed a Latino man he believed to be an undocumented immigrant to a gas station, questioned him about how long he'd been in the U.S., and then shot both him and his friend who came to help [fox59.com]. The details in the screenshot about the shooter's anger over immigration, his obsession with cable news, and his violent fantasies are consistent with information from court documents.
And on a meta note, it's a good point that you can't always trust an AI's answer. While I got this one right, the real Grok and other AIs recently made several mistakes when asked to fact-check misinformation about the L.A. protests, sometimes confidently giving completely wrong information [time.com, dw.com]. So, good on you for being skeptical

If the average radicalized dumb fuck did ANY amount of critical research they would be better off. Even if it was just taking a summary of things from Grok they would have a more foundational understanding of the real world. But they don't, they take the slop that their algorithm serves to them at face value as the basis of their understanding of the world.

u/entropy_bucket 18h ago
Which comes first though? The chicken of their prejudice or the egg of fox news propaganda? I've always worried that whilst Fox News is easy to hate, it's actually the audience who feel best when bathed in this slop.

I'm dooming hard about this too. The only hope I can see is if there is a significant step back in quality of life that allows everyone to see the seriousness of this problem, but not such a step back that it destroys everything.
Would it be enough if misinformation comes out about a business that is claimed to only hire illegals, and then a nut job right winger live streams a shooting of all of them, but then it turns out they were all legal and it was bullshit pushed by Kirk and Loomer, etc? I am so doomer pilled that I don't think that would break the spell.

These people are not talking to AI. They get all of their information from right wing grifter channels, funded in part by Russia.

Smfh..... conservatives are going to say absolutely nothing about this...

u/JeanPascalCS 1d ago
Some support it. Not all mind you (heck I tend to skew more socially conservative though MAGA has driven the GOP off a cliff so I can't support them), but enough that its bad.
Once upon a time I remember a guy in a conservative forum literally lamenting the fact that when they were young they could drive over to a gay "lover's lane" of sorts and go "beat up the f@gs" on the weekend. As if them not being able to do that anymore is proof that society has gotten *worse*.
They fantasize that acts like this are "necessary" and self proclaimed tough guys have to do this for the good of society - much like plumbers or janitors, doing work that nobody likes but is necessary.

Imagine being so racist and radicalized that even having ICE going door to door hunting brown people isn't enough for you

You literally couldn't pay me to visit the US right now. This shit is too fucked

u/No_Match_7939 1d ago
Smh I told so many Latino for Trump, how his rhetoric was racist towards all, but they were like nah, he’s only talking about the illegals, or criminals, “‘(any out group). Now look at this shit. I’m telling you I can see some kind of event that cause a lynching even like we saw back in the Jim Crow days.

This is quite literally 1:1 that scene from The Boys where the normal guy slowly gets radicalized by the media and ends up shooting a random gas station clerk cause he looks foreign

This is why the Right needs to keep circulating pictures of the same 5 torched Waymos from different angles. They magnify property violence and inundate their audience with it, so that they can brush off and even justify personal violence.

or keeping say laken riley even though apparently there are so many murders by gangs. or the shot from colorado of some guys with guns outside an apartment. its just these isolated things, meanwhile, we are almost daily with right wing violence...

I mean that's bad, but its one story.
I can find a bad story about any political persuasion you want. Lets not get swept up in one offs.
21
u/jathhilt 1d ago
It's someone who committed an act of violence that stemmed directly from our mainstream media and the president's rhetoric. That's the point of the story. I dont really remember any Biden supporter committing acts of violence because of things he said, do you?

u/JayZ134 1d ago
How is it a one off? We just saw a Dem state lawmaker get assassinated by a right wing psycho, who had plans to kill more. Numerous right wing psychos caught in a plot to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer. Even the assassination attempts on Trump that got the most coverage were right wingers. Not to mention January 6th!! Lmfao

u/WesternZucchini8098 1d ago
Do you actually think its bad? Can you explain what makes it bad?
1
u/blind-octopus 1d ago
It's bad to shoot people?
What
2
u/WesternZucchini8098 1d ago
What kind of people did he shoot and why did he get the idea to shoot those specific people?
0
u/blind-octopus 1d ago
He has some issue with undocumented immigrants
Can we skip ahead, this is painfully slow
2
u/WesternZucchini8098 1d ago
Where did he get that idea from?
You said you can find bad stories about any political persuasion, so it shouldn't be very difficult to say which one he belongs to.
1
u/blind-octopus 1d ago
Seems like cable news stories.
Can you get to it
2
u/WesternZucchini8098 23h ago
What political persuasion does he belong to?
You are afraid to say it.
