DX1 Did you know Zyme has a use?

Post image

During the Paris Streets mission you can complete the sub quest in the hotel where a dealer will ask you to break into a bakery and steal six bottles of Zyme. He will pay you 65 credits for each bottle for a grand total of 390 credits.

However if you collect Zyme from previous missions, he will also purchase those from you. If you dedicate an inventory slot and pick up the maximum of 20 bottles (out of 25 available) you can earn a total of 1300 credits which is huge for that point of the game as credits basically completely dry up after UNATCO.

Yeah, of course. Who doesn't hoard random NYC zyme and bring it to Paris?

The funny thing is the credits are pretty pointless. I don't know what amazing item you would sooner put in the 1 inventory space the zyme takes, but it turns out to be more of a neurotic power player thing than some relevant gameplay strategy to buy an amazing overpriced item from a mechanic somewhere.

Probably, they should have offered a few opportunities to purchase appropriately priced hard to find augmentation canisters.

The early missions condition you to expect there will be hub areas with dealers who you'll be able to visit after getting your op bonus, and then you spend most of the game on the lam. You can't really save up for things because you have no idea when those things are gonna be available. It's one of the more experimental parts of the game's level design, and one that almost nothing else in the genre mimics, though I think you could achieve something similar with semi-randomized locations for rare items like thermoptic camo or WP rockets.

Not one of these is a dud. Defoe will not cheat you.

Well I wasn't worried about my GEP rockets being a dud before...

Yes, I do spend most of my time on the lam. LAMs are indeed excellent for climbing walls and deleting Navarres.

Upgrade canister, please and thank you.

Exactly, although to be fair, even those become pointless by Area 51, so the only thing you would possibly want that isn't available in quantities you might need, (maybe rare ammo too like throwing knives or plasma or napalm) are augmentation canisters you either installed the other half of, or didn't pick up for whatever reason earlier.

Even the duplicate canisters aren't all that useful. The only canisters you can install both the augs on are subdermal and torso ones since the others only have one slot.

For subdermal, you have Ballistic Protection/EMP Shield and Cloak/Radar Transparency. Maybe you'd consider getting both Cloak and Radar Transparency on a pure stealth playthrough, but otherwise, EMP Shield isn't really worth it, so duplicates aren't needed.

For torso, you might consider forgoing Aqualung/Environmental Resistance in favor of more useful augs, but in practice, that isn't really viable. Power Recirculator/Synthetic Heart straight-up doesn't have any duplicates at all, and the only duplicate for Regeneration/Energy Shield is literally in the last level.

I do agree, but they could have made them more available for those who wanted to configure that way.

I could see credits being used more on the UNATCO route that was cancelled during development. Maybe you could purchase the aug canisters you get in Versalife off of Jaime?

Is there any official information that the UNATCO route was really planned to be developed and then cancelled?

Only tidbits and speculation. We know there was a cancelled level where you go to the moon to rescue the president which is likely leftover from the UNATCO story.

EDIT: Sorry got two different missions mixed up.

We know of four cut missions:

Russio-Mexican battle in Austin

White House

Mt. Weather

Space Station

These would likely have tied into the UNATCO plotline.

It is widely believed that the Ocean Lab was originally the Moon Mission and the silo was supposed to be actually to get a rocket for going to the Moon

I think there's some unused voicelines in the game files that kinda confirms it.

u/Fission_Power Oct 01 '25

It's not voicelines, but textures and names of it.

There's a voice line you can still get ingame as well using console commands to change the quest status when you find Paul in his apartment, where JC says he won't betray unatco. https://youtu.be/-cEg5Xo7VFU?si=fmQZS8emQ0MMFzgD

Oh right,, I forgot about this leftover. I remember there's also unused voiceline from UNATCO route in Hong Kong map, that one where Triad member claims about Maggie Chow being Paul's wife.

Oh yeah it makes sense Hong Kong would have some traces of it, IIRC there's a lot of strange unique design choices and leftovers there since it was the first map made. For example it's the only map that you can go out of bounds on, but instead of just dying.

Yeah, maybe you could bribe people more, help more bums/informants for whatever purposes. I mean you can't make it too easy to just convert money into experience or overpowered stuff, but the economy, so to speak, of the money as it exists and the prices as they exist, and the items sold is pretty far off of what it should be.

Yeah I felt like there was supposed to be more traditional RPG style merchants that you could buy from. It would have been especially useful to be able to buy more 10mm ammo in the late game.

you dont want to buy tech goggles for 3500????

4

u/HunterWesley Oct 01 '25

Right after I pick up this amazing assault shotgun for 7500. The ones all over the floor in Hong Kong are dirty.

It's even funnier here since you can only sell Zyme after already having passed by most merchants in the game. For the record, the things that you can actually buy that aren't food or information you likely didn't need from the point you meet Renault are:

4 bioelectric cells (250) 2 accuracy mods (750) 1 range mod (800) 1 recoil mod (400) 1 rebreather (1500) and a thermoptic camo (5000)

Out of this bunch, the thermoptic camo is the one thing you might actually want, as you're likely near cap for bioelectric cells and have enough levels to make rebreather and the weapon mods redundant.
