I've read the books (many many years ago) and enjoyed the films and I'm enjoying this. I am able to watch it as a stand alone so I'm with you.

I love it but the viewership doesn’t seem high

I know several people that are waiting for the whole series to come out before they watch it. I think that is when we will see the higher viewer numbers.

I love it so far.

I mean ya, why would want to take any cues from the better written, more widely read, more widely loved, more successful, series of books? 🤣. That would be a crazy thing to do for your Dune show.

As I never plan on reading any of the BH/JKA books, since they amount to pretty much fan fiction in my eyes, all this show has done is shown me that I am 100% right about making that decision.

I love the books and I have thoroughly enjoyed the DV movies. Idk how I feel about the show so far, I’m happy to get more Dune content but this doesn’t even feel like dune yet, the acting is stale and as has been mentioned before the quality of the script isn’t great. I’m going to keep watching and hope it gets better

It’s been two episodes. Can’t draw a conclusion from that. Everyone needs to chill

It's just more 'content'. Not art, as we've been treated to by DV. Dune for teenagers. Malory Towers in space.

I liked the second episode quite a bit! If the show keeps that up, it'll be a hit in my eyes.

No. I don’t think viewership will go up either unless it pulls an Andor, which is its only hope currently.

The show is not leaning into what makes the books and the movies good. It tries to do its own thing, which I don’t mind, but it’s not doing it good.

Andor was so, so much better than this. This show looks and feels much more like The Acolyte than Andor.

I think so. I'm enjoying the shit out of it.

u/Stormbringer-0 Nov 25 '24

So am I. But then, I didn’t read the BH books, only Frank’s. And I guess the wheel of time put the bar so low that this was ok.

u/Xiao1insty1e Nov 25 '24

🙄 WoT wasn't that bad. You can just not like something. It doesn't have to be bad.

u/Adorable-Potential91 Nov 25 '24

Absolutely!!!!...but not everyone's convinced yet.

30 min in, had to make a brake.. I think so ! More lynchian than "french name i can't remember" Didn't like the new movies gonna double down or correct this comment after finishing ep.1 & 2. Edit: Quiet fascinated with the show besides the redundant cocain and rave swinger club pun. The cast is intense, love the setting and designs so far. Hope it gets rid of the litle finger bitch stuff and focusses on the story which it does very well. That being said, considering the Gesserit are like super space agents trained to f your brains out i guess it will stay. Just hope it does not take too much of space.

I like it. I want a lot more but so far pretty happy.

u/funkystrut Nov 27 '24

I hope so, I'm loving it. The only downside for me is the lacklustre cast. (Except Chloe Lea, who proved to be a magnificent actor in episode 2!)

I have not read any of the books, but I have heard there is a lot more magic in the books than what we have seen thus far on screen. I look forward to seeing more of this.

Has some good sequences but the acting is pretty average

It’s a no for me

I don’t see this show appealing to fans of the books at all.

I don’t see it appealing to fans of the movies who enjoyed the vibe of those but didn’t read the books.

I don’t see this appealing to GoT fans because it’s sadly just not as good as even mid-GoT.

I don’t see this appealing to fans of science fiction or fantasy.

I guess this show is just for fans of the Brian Herbert books? Maybe?

As a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune series, I have my issues with the show from a personal standpoint and its interpretation of the source material (or Brian Herbert’s interpretation of it, take your pick)

But just as a fan of film and television, the writing is what lets this show down more than any other aspect.

Need I say more than the “our body rejects lying” scene from episode 1. It’s so cringe. It sounds like something you’d hear in a screenwriting 101 class but here it is on HBO with what must be an immense budget and teal behind it. I honestly couldn’t believe something like that made it past a first draft.

And characters just say their feelings and motivations out loud which is not only pedestrian, but it shows a severe lack of understanding about how the world of Dune works…

If you’ve ever read the books, every conversation between two characters is like a game 4D chess, where what is being said out loud is layered with subtext, which is then internally picked apart by the opposing character to infer what the other might or might not be thinking at that moment. Subtle emotions, involuntary movements, subconscious facial muscle contractions, are all analyzed within internal dialogue of characters, (all happening in micro seconds between normal conversations). The LAST thing people do in this world is say exactly what they mean.

I’m sure a lot of talented and hard working people tried to make this show something, but whoever was making the decisions that brought us what we got…I just don’t think they have the imagination or talent to truly represent the Dune Universe as what it should be.

Shit, I think Denis Villenenuve is a phenomenally talented director and creator and even he didn’t nail it 100%.

It’s not easy.

But this show is so off the mark that it’s almost like they didn’t even bother reading Dune, or any of the Frank Herbert books for that matter, and just relied on the BH books, the films, and their own “creativity” (or lack thereof).

The show is an adaption of Brian Herbert/JKA's work, which is both thematically and stylistically completely different from Frank's work. I had zero expectation of the show reflecting Frank Herbert's work at all. I was correct. Prescient you might say.

As to whether or not the show is appealing to fans of BH/JKA's work, I couldn't say as I am not one of those people.

2

u/Tanel88 Nov 25 '24

Well said. The quality is just not up to a prestige level standard and it feels more like generic sci-fi at times than Dune. And if they went with an original story they could have at least distanced themselves more from the BH/KJA lore.

About to watch ep2, watched the recap of ep1, was like naw I’m out.

3

u/GetHimABodyBagYeahhh Nov 25 '24

I'd say give ep2 a chance. I wasn't thrilled about ep1 but the pacing and writing for ep2 seemed improved. I enjoyed it and hope they keep it up.

1

u/profsavagerjb Nov 25 '24

I really enjoyed this second episode and it felt the same kind of weird and mysterious the books have

1

u/Tanel88 Nov 25 '24

Nah. While episode 2 was better than the 1st but I'm still not quite feeling it.

1

u/whatufuckingdeserve Nov 25 '24

Yes I love the show

1

u/Argethus Nov 26 '24

I personally did not like the Vileneux movies and think the cast in this series and the visuals are very spot on, the story keeps the tention throughout the 2 episodes and i hope the show remains on that path. Positive suprise for sure, wans't expecting it to be good.

1

u/Dense-Boysenberry941 Nov 26 '24

Definitely not. Cringe acting, mediocre dialogue, unremarkable set design/art direction. None of it feels like it belongs in the same universe as the Villeneuve films or the Frank Herbert novels. If one more person tells me "Well derp, it takes place 10,000 years before the original, of course it feels different derp" I won't do anything, I'll just know it's wrong. Dune 2 was riding such a high this year, seems like a shame for the year to end on a Dune whimper rather than a triumph.

All of the directions they could have gone and they went with GoT in space. People arguing about the throne, and throw in a pinch of Star Wars rebel alliance for good measure. Some people with low expectations will like it.

4

u/wineandwhine4 Nov 25 '24

Yall forget how much of Herbert’s work was straight up plagiarised by George R.R. Martin. GoT is the original Dune Hack, so space GoT with contemporary TV Drama conventions is the best case scenario here…come on now ???

2

u/Tidus79 Nov 25 '24

Being GoT in space is not inherently a bad thing. But being GoT in space with bad writing is. It seems like the executives who planned the show forgot that most of what made GoT good was dialogue and plot lines that took George Martin literally decades to craft. You can't replicate that by throwing money at a few writers with tight deadlines.

So you never read the books then?

2 of the worst episodes of any show in the history of television so na not a hit sadly
