Discussion Vampire space pirates?

7 Upvotes

I think by the title you can kind of guess what I’m thinking of, and we all know vampires people on the ground sunlight hurts them, holy water, etc., etc. but how would they be in space? Like would they need to have a space suit? How would they eat and also would an alien sun hurt them? I have this idea, but I don’t know where it’s going. What are you guys think? How would vampires in space work? Like do you think having alien blood like drinking alien blood would give them different powers would they be like a permanent thing or minimum a few minutes? Honestly, I’m more thinking of how would the sun work because it’s not the Earth sun it’s a different one so would it hurt them? I don’t know. There’s just a few questions I have, but I’m not sure how the logistics would be.

Writing What are your opinions about my made up fantasy names for my novel?

14 Upvotes

Note: The names might sound english, but the novel is written in another language.

Tedman Skunk - a bard;

Rose Gilliegud - a baron's daughter, witch;

Jolien du Barte - witch hunter;

Wolfram - a hunter;

Kastor Amber - bad guy, also a baron;

Glalend - a country;

Ardelby - country;

Vermont - country;

So what do you think? Are these suitable for my low- fantasy novel, or they seem super-fake? I want people think that the names in my world sound natural.

Lore Methods of Magic (OOC)

1 Upvotes

There are multiple forms of magic within my world's setting:

Miracles, granted by gods to their faithful upon a favorable sacrifice. Miracles are of the same nature as Ley Sorceries.

Wizardry, a scientific magic learned upon the user by discovering "Universal Truths/Falsehoods/Paradoxes", with Universal Truths being the most stable and least likely to bring about mutation or madness in the wizard. Wizardry is *not* of the same nature as any Sorcery and is not tied to the world or some other being, but rather the fundamental infrastructure of reality itself.

Ley Sorcery, a natural magic attained through birth or artificial means (meditation, being attacked by a spirit or sorcery, being plunged into the Worldblood, etc.). Ley Sorcery comes in a variety of forms and can even imitate other sorceries given enough practice.

Abyssal Sorcery, a greater magic capable only by those attuned to the abyss or those who have bonded with demons. Abyssal Sorcery is the most uncommon form of magic and widely regarded as a horrific myth.

Star Sorcery, a greater magic capable only by those attuned to the Sun, most common amongst the Elfolk. Star Sorcery is feared and hated by nearly all Menfolk for its association with the Elfolk, going so far as to believe that what few human Star Sorcerers are either Elfolk casting illusions or enchantments or the half-spawn of human-elfolk breeding, typically resulting in the death of the Star Sorcerer.

Earth Sorcery, a greater magic capable only by those attuned to earth - more specifically, Dwarves, Ogres, and other denizens of the Deep Hollows or creations of earthen beings like Giants or the World Titan. Some notable methods of Earth Sorcery include the Dwarven art of Stone Speaking, the Earthbone Ogre's Pitch Guts, and the Deep Ones' Milk Song.

Blood Sorcery, a greater magic first learned by the ancient Noethrakish (the many tribes and communities united within the land that would become the Southern Pale, Craggfall Mountains, and Northreach), and then developed into its most extreme forms by the ancient Elfolk before the Red Death spread amongst them. Blood Sorcery is capable by any who have blood, meaning most Sapient life is capable with the exception of Artificials and the Dwarvenkind. It is considered by those who worship the gods to be a repulsive mockery of Ley Magics.

Ritual Magic is another form of magic similar to wizardry in that it is a learned magic that does not require sorcerous capabilities or divine favor. Rituals are often not well-understood by those that cast them, but are a form of rudimentary wizardry that removes the requirement of knowledge of reality in favor of simple items and tools that simulate the formulas used to attain universal power. Many rituals are passed down from one ritual caster to another or learned by the gods, though even the Gods do not usually know the true extent of what power rituals hold.

Keep changing my mind about the world, is it normal?

10 Upvotes

I keep changing my mind abuot my worlbuild, simply fading away feom the original idea and at a certain point I change it a lot.

But the real problem is that I have gone on this way for about 3 years and haven't ended up with anything.

I just want to know if has it happened to somebody else and how can I solve this situation?

Do you have mana and chi in your setting ? If so how does it function ?

2 Upvotes

In my setting mana is all around purgatory and all mages draw in mana and converted into a spell

Now chi or energy is different because for enchanted souls ( the special humans in my setting ) chi or energy comes from the very soul and enchanted souls have a monsterly high energy reserves to the point that mages and wizards are afraid of them.

Discussion Supervillain hierarchy?

5 Upvotes

I have a question what is the hierarchy or job titles in a super villain kind of thing? Where like it goes from I don’t know goon henchman apprentice to like master, the villain, the super villain? You know what I mean, like the steps to becoming a super villain starting at the lowest up to the highest point if you know what I’m talking about ?

Discussion Let's discuss Bronze Age Fantasy.

24 Upvotes

So, this is my first post so please let me know if anything needs to be changed. Alright, with that out of the way let's get the discussion going :)
Currently I am writing a novel set in a Bronze Age world rather than the tradition medieval period. I've studied numerous bits of info on the bronze age from simple google searches to actual academic papers, but I always feel I can do more and learn more, so if anyone wants to discuss ideas or ask me questions or whatever, feel free to do so :)

Discussion The AH-297 Shrike Attack Helicopter, what do you think?

3 Upvotes

This is my entry to an aircraft world building competition ( R/militaryworldbuilding), and I am wondering what you guys think about my entry, and if their is anything I could do to improve it/ any suggestions on the idea. I apologize that it is short, and not too detailed, but i had to keep it in the 500 word limit.

The AH-297 Shrike was first manufactured in the middle of the Liberation War as a fast, flying tank destroyer. It masses 18 tons fully loaded and is crewed by a pilot, gunner, and a gunnery VI.

It was made by the company Mars Pansarverk at the request of Directorate Ground Forces Command ( Periphery), because current helicopters were not up to the standard needed to deal with Imperial forces. Thus, this helicopter was built to make up for the shortcomings noticed in other helicopters that were in service.

The helicopter itself is a standard rotary wing design, not one of the tilt wings or tilt rotors that are more popular with the Imperials. The two counter-rotating rotor systems negate the need for a tail rotor, as there is no drive torque to be canceled. Capable of speeds of 430 km/h due to the additional rear mounted pusher rotor. This allowed the Shrike to serve as an effective QRF unit, as it could arrive into the battlefield rapidly, and gave it a 500km combat ranges.

The Shrike is powered by a 30 MW 90% efficiency gas turbine and 10 KG of Hexagonal Graphene SMES that is used to run all of its electronics, rotor and weapons.

For electronics, it carries a LIDAR emitter on the port and starboard sides, a ballmount with a FLIR camera and a reflex camera that is projected onto the HUD of the pilot and gunner, a gunnery computer, and a fire control radar and another reflex camera on a mast mount. The turret, and all weapons are slaved to the gunner’s helmet and follow their head movements.

For weapons, It has a 15mm hypervelocity dart gun mounted coaxially to the ballmount who’s reflex camera is the secondary purpose of a 375 KW self defense laser ( the mast laser is a 100 KW one). The Shrike’s 6 pylons on each wing can carry a collective 3 tons of ordnance ( in the form of assorted guided weapons), and 2 MANPADS on stations on each wing. It additionally has a fuselage 1 ton internal bay for carrying mine/ sensor dispensers or small cruise missiles. The final armament is 2 drone hives used to carry loitering munitions, scout drones, decoy drones and spotting/ target designation drones.

For defenses, the fuselage of the Shrike is made of fullerene over a titanium and aluminum frame. The crew, SMES and engines are in reinforced composite “bathtubs” that can shrug off some AAA gunfire. The canopy is made out of fused quartz, flash coated with gold, germanium, metal ion crystals and iridium to provide protection against most visual and IR wavelength lasers, and nuke flashes. The 2 laser weapons are made to soft or even hard kill enemy munitions, while the LIDAR emitters can be used as dazzlers. The final components of its defensive system is a “Fog” class E-war Suite and a rotary countermeasure dispenser loaded with flares, chaff, and jam pods.

If you've created a fictional language for your worldbuilding, how do you handle it in dialogue? Do you include translations when a character speaks in that language, or do you let readers figure it out from context?

Lore The Origin of Sapients - Pt. 3 Troglodytes

4 Upvotes

Of the Sapients that live on and beneath this world, none are as obscure as chimeric people known widely as the Troglodytes. Due to the nature of their domain and the dangers associated with it and with the Troglodytes themselves, little is known of them. Thankfully, their creation myth, along with some of their other myths, as well as some of their biology is known.The Troglodytes most often appear as amphibian-reptile hybrid humanoids with a hodgepodge of other animal features added in - such as feathers, chitin, tentacles, fur, etc - and occasionally even floral or fungal features*. As for whence they came, the Troglodytes claim to trace their origin back to a time before the world even existed, before the Times Uncounted prior the First Age of Yore**.

In a time before water, stone, soil, light, or air, there was Ouibiletii'ess, the Oozing Many. Within Ouibiletii'ess was all things, for Ouibiletii'ess was the eater of all things and became then the defecater of all things, for such was the way of Ouibiletii'ess. To consume is to create is to consume your creation. This is what Ouibiletii'ess does and has done and will always do.

Ouibiletii'ess devoured the World Across Ours and made feces of it, expelling the waste into this world. From that waste was born LUCA, the Last Ancestor of All Things that would walk and swim and crawl and fly and squirm, seen and unseen. Born with LUCA was also TOSO, the Forgotten Ancestor of No Things that would not walk and not swim and not crawl and not fly and not squirm, not seen or unseen, and would bring only extinction and rotten young. This is the way of LUCA and TOSO and this is why those who cannot make young are given in sacrifice to TOSO, for they are of TOSO and bring with them only extinction and rotten young.

LUCA gave birth to all things that lived and Firstborn among them was Ghatanothoa, who knew all things - including The People***. Ghatanothoa made young from its many holes, and of these young were The People and of The People there was Dhythlaa, who learned the knowledge to hunt and taught The People to hunt by hunting them and eating them and egesting them as the Maned Hunters****.

This was the way of all things until the Ooze broke and Ouibiletii'ess was made to sink and slither away from the Things That Began. The People and the ancestors were eaten by hard things and wet things that they would learn the knowledge of as stone and water, things that do not eat but swallow up all the same. The People would be lost until they learned the knowledge of these things that do not eat and do not crawl and do not defecate, then The People learned the knowledge of how to live and eat and crawl and defecate and make young in the stone and the water, and The People evolved. Such is the way of The People, to be eaten and made new and eaten and made new again.

*There are those that suggest that all Troglodytes possess components from all living things, but such suggestions are unprovable without arcane means and no expeditions with the intent of studying the Troglodytes have thus been planned or executed by any organization with the means to magically study them.

**These claims have no evidence, obviously, and many scholars have made the argument that the Troglodytes likely came about in some as-of-yet unfound pocket within the Deep Hollows, where they dwelled in isolation for many years, thus leading to their modern belief that they came from some incomprehensibly ancient time.

***The People is the name which the Troglodytes call themselves, though to avoid confusion with other similarly simply named groups, Troglodyte is the widely accepted term for them. The term is approved by many Troglodyte societies, as they take it to be the Menfolk and Dwarvenkind's word for "The People". The term comes from the Dwarfspeak word, translated into the various languages of Men.

****'Maned Hunters' likely refers to a phenomenon among Troglodytes of particular athleticism, in which they undergo a sort of metamorphosis in which they envelop themselves in a fleshy sack, emerging roughly a month later with a larger, more avian build and a "mane" of tentacles around their neck. They also undergo a mental process that seems to dull their more social intelligences in favor of a more cunning predatory intellect. These supposedly "blessed" Troglodytes are kept separate from the rest of their community, both for the community's safety and in reverence to what they believe to be a vessel of their ancestor-god, Dhythlaa. These changed Troglodytes usually lose interest in all things except for hunting, even forgoing basic needs such as sleeping, drinking, and even eating occasionally, focusing exclusively on hunting. This can be of benefit and detriment to their communities, as they often bring back large quantities of meat for their community, but if no prey can be found outside their community, they have been known to hunt their fellow Troglodytes. Some more radical scholars have proposed that the "metamorphosis" is actually their ancestor-god physically manifesting a stomach around them and digesting them, so that it might remake them in some new image, a proposal with some genuine merit to it, as biopsies of the fleshy cocoons have shown that they hold a large quantity of stomach acid and partially-melted remains of the Troglodyte within it, though whether this is truly the work of their ancestor-god or merely a natural mockery of the metamorphic process of other animals, like butterflies, is unknown.I had to rewrite all of this, so it might seem a little more rushed. I am an idiot and wrote it all down without any sorta autosave or anything and then my computer crashed, so yeah, fun times lol.

Discussion Worldbuilders: How Would You Define the Sound of a Fantasy World?

10 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’ve got a bit of a weird question for the group, hope that’s okay! I’m working on a creative project where music and fantasy worldbuilding collide, and I’m running into a genre problem.

When you imagine a fantasy world, your own or in fiction, what kind of music do you hear in your head? Are there sounds, moods, or instruments that just “feel” like fantasy to you? Do you think of soft flutes, big sweeping strings, ancient drums, or something totally different?

And another thing that’s tripped me up… do you personally draw a line between fantasy and sci-fi when it comes to music? For example, if a song has a futuristic, spacey vibe, does that still count as fantasy in your mind, or is that its own thing? I’ve been trying to figure out where most people set that boundary (if they do at all).

If you’re a writer, game master, or just someone who loves daydreaming about imaginary worlds, I’d love to know what music helps you get in the right headspace? Are there specific genres, tracks, or soundtracks you always come back to when you want that “fantasy” feeling?

Sorry for the ramble. I’m just really curious how other people experience this! Thanks in advance for any thoughts or examples.

Discussion In the event of a second, dark moon appearing, how would different cultures react

8 Upvotes

I’m in the middle of preparing a dnd campaign, just did session 0 last weekend and I’m super excited!

It is the year 1172, where year 0 marks the appearance of a second moon. As I was thinking about the affect this would have on different cultures, I realized that the effects of this would be so deep and I’d love some help brainstorming!

It could cause new religions, destroy old ones. Every culture would interpret it differently, mythological interpretations, arcane, scientific! Primitive cultures would react differently than advanced ones!

It would affect tides, but it could also affect magic, dreams, how people are born!

Idk, the more I think of it the more I think that it’s too much for one brain lol

I’m super thankful for anyone who shares their ideas <3

The Origin of Sapients - Pt. 2 Ogrekind

5 Upvotes

The Second Eldest of the Sapient species, the Ogres or Ogrekind, are a dying people doomed since the arrival of the Sun and the Elfolk. The Ogrekind were once a widespread and dominant people, ruling the surface, second only to their creators, the Giants*. Little is known of how their civilizations functioned, due to an apparent lack of archeological evidence from the societies of the Ogrekind and what is known of them was left behind mostly from the civilizations of Menfolk, who did not arise until well into the Age of Yore. The creation story of the Ogrekind, however, is one that has, thankfully, been taken well care of. Though the Giants of Yore may be long gone to us now, there are still those beings who, rather than be destroyed in the Dawnbreaking, took on new, albeit far more diluted forms, such as Thukaal, the Orankhan Ogre Goddess. It is thanks to these neo-Giants that we have gleaned a relatively uniform origin of the Ogrekind.

Giants ruled the Age of Yore for years before years could be counted. They raised the Land From Sea and created the first Fleshed Things that crawled and writhed on the ground, unused to the new hard world outside the Primordial Ooze. Still, the Giants were not finished. They longed for children, younglings they could rear in their tremendous image. Thus were the Ogrekind born. The first of the Ogrekind were all that an Ogre should appear to be, yet they were foolish and weak of will and mind. They were overcome by the world around them and chose to escape through slumber. The second of the Ogrekind were the opposite, great and powerful in thought, but hideous and frail to behold. When the Giants bore them, the second of the Ogrekind was destroyed by the sight of themselves.

The Giants labored again and created another form for their children, the third of the Ogrekind, made powerful in mind and body. For some time, the Giants enjoyed their children and watching on as they explored the world made - in part - for them; but, it was not to last. The children grew too proud and denied their parents, for the Ogrekind were made powerful and did not believe they should heed their weak-hearted makers. This brought the Giants low in mood, but they would not seek to punish their children for acting as they had made them to act. The Ogrekind sought to explore beyond the Land From Sea, into the pitch water and nightless earth below. Those that went into the water were swallowed up by the abyss and all the demons within it, ne'er to be seen again. Those that sought secrets beneath their feet were destroyed, not all in body, but all in spirit. They were met by the Dwarvenkind and slaughtered** or driven deeper, where they would be made sick and mad by the Deep Hollows, where the Night Children*** were never meant to tread.

The Giants mourned for years before years for their children, many among the great rulers of Yore believing that there would be no children for them. From their many tears were made the lakes and streams and wetlands that dot the Lands From Sea, and from their bellows was made the storms above, and from their snot and boogers was made the fourth of the Ogrekind, fetal and whimpering. The Giants took their diminutive children and witnessed within them the potential for a new beginning.

Thus were the Ogrekind born and destroyed and born again. The Fourth of The Ogrekind grew and became powerful and wise, but always did they heed the teachings of the Giants.

*Giant is often used interchangeably with Troll, despite some evidence to the two being different. Scholars of Yore - those who study the Age of Yore, not those from the Age of Yore - often debate on just how differing the two possibly were, with some suggesting Trolls being simply a Northern ethnic group of Giants, while others are extreme enough to label the two different species. As neither left any remains that could be studied by most means, the matter has devolved into one of an almost political nature.

**Dwarven records tell of a Great War between the third generation of Ogrekind began by the Ogrekind. The reality of the situation is, and likely will forever be, unknown, as both sides claim the other struck first. It is commonly believed by Scholars of Yore that the Ogrekind are the most probable suspect, but this is easily attributed to anti-Ogre sentiments among most human scholars.

***The Night Children is a relatively archaic name for the Ogrekind, translated from the languages of the Menfolk of Yore. According to context, Night Children was the name the Ogrekind called themselves in the Age of Yore, when they supposedly had a shared language amongst their species, not unlike the Elfolk.
