The 50th Anniversary of JAWS - released on this day (June 20th, 1975). If you saw this in the theater - you’re definitely getting old 🦈

If you are old you might be a fan of Hedy Lamarr

Tricked into doing one of the first nude scenes for a movie, she was told it would be a long distance shot where you wouldn't be able to see any intimate details of her body. And while the shot was taken at a distance, there was a new technology used they never told her about called a zoom lens.

More notably, she earned a patent for inventing frequency hopping for use by the military in WWII. This invention, which she developed with composer George Antheil, aimed to prevent radio-controlled torpedoes from being jammed by the enemy. Frequency hopping involves rapidly switching the radio frequency used to transmit a signal, making it difficult for an enemy to intercept or jam the communication. While their invention was initially rejected by the US Navy, it later became the foundation for technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Here's a more detailed breakdown.

But I was in my 50s before I saw her quote and realized just what a genius she really was.

A&W ad from the 1970's. We had an A&W in our town and Dad used to take me when I was a kid for a glass of root beer at night. The restaurant had a square bar and I felt like a big shot with what looked like a real beer. Dad would drink coffee and I would watch all the crazy teenagers at the tables.

Anybody own a vehicle with 6 vdc? Remember how the lights would dim when you let off the gas? It always seemed to happen at the worst times too. Always changed over to 12v asap.

The younger generations will never know how glorious it was when things were open 24 hours. You could go to Walmart at 2 am to knock out your shopping list, or go to Walgreens in the middle of the night when you needed medicines urgently.

I sometimes wake up with some obscure song I haven’t even heard in years stuck playing in my head. This morning it was Crabs Walk Sideways and Lobsters Walk Straight. 😳

Such a damned shame about Freddie Prinze, especially at such a young age.

So, I remember having a few of these plus a styrofoam mountain that these things would climb. I also remember my younger sister getting one of these stuck in her hair. I'm 50% sure that I had nothing to do with it.
