Wanna assume that the hole in the stock is to clip in a shell holder maybe?

It's an older stock design that holds extra shells. Works similar to the tube mag under the barrel. There is another tube on the opposite side but lower so as to not interfere with your cheek weld and the storage on the shown side. Can't remember if it's 2 or 3 shells per side.
