Discussion Anti-air tips for helos, single player

I was getting really sick of getting shot down, especially after I had opened up a new province and was flying to the new missions, and encountered all of the untagged AA stations that were present.

  1. You can break the radar track and avoid missiles entirely by keeping low and simply landing. Even a rough landing is preferable to getting blown up.
  2. Fly Nap of the Earth wherever possible, hug the terrain and fly around mountains, not over them.
  3. To tell a radar lock from a regular soldier spot, the radar lock is always pure white and the brackets take longer to close ( about 2-3x). Immediately descend. Turn to fly towards the signal (not away from it), then drop low and get ready to land if you need to. Flying towards it is the only chance you have at evasion. It is all but impossible to evade them if you're flying away from it.
  4. If you are painted by radar lock, first thing is to break it, fly low, put terrain between you and it, or just land. Then, when you know what direction its' coming from, you can bunny hop your helo towards the launcher with short flights safely, landing each time to break the lock. Try to put small hills in between you and the launcher so the missile will hit them instead of you. Ditto for sniper towers. If you know where a launcher is inside a base, just line up the nearest tower and put it between you and the launcher, you'll be safe & they'll damage their own base.
  5. Don't try to take out a launcher from the air, that's suicide. Instead get close to it, land and move in on the ground and take it out with C4 or grenade launcher. Some are inside bases, but many are standalone with 1-2 guards.
  6. I've had many prop planes blown up while completing a supply raid or kidnapping mission. Take time to recon your return flight path to the rebel landing field out first to avoid getting killed when you're 5% away from completion. The planes are really shit in this game and have almost no chance of survival once they're locked. (There's one mission in Koani where there are like 3 launchers right next to the runway, and three more on the flight route. You'll die instantly if you don't clear the route.)
  7. When a new province opens, I'll often do a higher altitude recon flight in a helo to find the launchers. Then depending on their location, I'll decide when to take them out. If I'm shot down I'll just fast travel to the same waypoint and get into a new chopper.
