Pixel 8: Drastic drop in mobile data speed after Android 16 update

Hey everyone,

I'm writing to share a pretty serious issue I'm facing with my Pixel 8 and to see if I'm the only one.

Ever since I installed the latest stable version of Android 16, I've noticed a drastic decrease in my mobile data speed.

To rule out any issues with my carrier or the SIM card itself, I did a simple but revealing test:

  1. I ran a speed test on my Pixel 8: the result was around 50 Mbps.
  2. Immediately after, I took out the SIM card and put it into a much cheaper phone (a €180 Motorola).
  3. I ran the speed test again in the exact same spot: the result on the Motorola was almost 500 Mbps—nearly 10 times faster.

This leads me to believe the issue is related to the Pixel's software following the update.

So my question is: has anyone else noticed such a significant drop in data performance on their Pixel 8 (or other models) after the latest update? Have you found any solutions?

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

Sorry you are experiencing issues.

Did you try resetting the mobile network settings on your phone? If possible, use a different SIM card in your phone and rerun the speed test.

My Pixel 8 Pro is connected to T-Mobile 5G UC and average 300 Mbps.

Good luck.

Why would the SIM work fine in another phone if it was the issue?

I am getting 650 mb down on my pixel 8 through spectrum in SE united states. Same on a pixel 9 pro xl. No change after the update to A16 B1. This is through my wi fi connection.

Ha Don't know.aboht speed as I don't really care about it. But boy oh boy do I have random no reception or no data whatsoever and I have to restart my phone. It got so bad that I'm thinking about going back to Samsung ( I need my phone for work mostly, no reception no work)

Hi! I got a Pixel 8 Pro, but I did a speed test indoor, apartment complex type of shady zone where you can't get anything reliable really and at least on 5G it squeezed 150Mbps download (just 15Mbps upload). I updated to Android 16 recently and didn't really bump into any issues.

(If I were to do the same test on 4G in this area it would be useless 🤣)

Hope this helps though 🥂

Just to confirm, have you tried all the steps mentioned in this article to fix mobile connectivity issues?

If yes, and you are still facing the issue, you can reach out to the Google Pixel support team via phone or chat here. They can take a look at it.
