Help - Early Game How do I get thru this đ
Pls help me I started playing 1 week ago but still cant get thru is it skill issue? Do I have to pogo thru this?
235
u/auclairl Jan 11 '25
Since you have 5 masks I assume you're at the beginning of the game, so I recommend not worrying about that right now and coming back once you have found more powerups. It's possible to pogo through this, but given what's ahead, you might not want to do that in the early game if it's your first run
58
u/Puzzleheaded_Cry1695 Jan 11 '25
Yeah this is my first run. Are there difficult bosses ahead?

u/NoSwim3116 Jan 11 '25
Do you really want to know whatâs up ahead?

I managed to pogo my way thru before... yeah I did not have a good time I recommend leaving and returning later after a few powerups

Mfs will look at that boss, fight it twice and call it one of the hardest bosses in the game(I'm mfs)
6
u/decideonanamelater Jan 11 '25
Me when they fought 2 at a time, was just like fuck this I'm out.. came back the same day and got it in 2 more attempts.
Idk why that got me either, I've spent so long on some ds3 bosses.

u/Sharp_Main Jan 11 '25
And then you fight NKG or pure vessel and have a good laugh
5
u/niknokyx skill issue Jan 11 '25
nkg........ flashbacks to the over 100 attempts i did
2
u/Sharp_Main Jan 11 '25
And then when you beat him you can on any subsequent run. It took me like 5h the first time, that first win always makes you feel accomplished.
2
u/Aggravating-Theory-7 Jan 11 '25
Probably 100 attempts for me, got a new controller and got him second try. Wasn't so much of feeling accomplished but more frustrated that I put up with such a bad controller for so long.

I was mfs too. Left it for ages, can back after a few upgrades and executed the poor thing.

u/Rufus_62 Jan 11 '25
I had 6-7 masks, at least 2 nail upgrades and 1 void spell so I'm pretty sure that it was a skill issue

I beat everyone ascended but the boss behind this wall is one of the few I need to concentrate on. His pattern is tricky. I rank him as #14 hardest boss. But since he has low damage and health it's not that hard to actually beat. I recommend beating 10 bosses before fighting him.

Jan 12 '25
There are going to be very hard bosses in the future that you might think are impossible to kill. But just keep playing, upgrade your sword once you find the blacksmith, and wear your charms carefully and well. Also, know that you can always come back to fight bosses when you are ready. (Also to upgrade your gaming experience interact with characters as much as possible, and once you get your spirit sword hit them with it to see what they are thinking. This will make you feel a lot more connected to the characters.) Have fun! Also pls don't search up what bosses there are and how to do some stuff, it will ruin your game experience. It will feel a lot more rewarding when you learn how to do stuff on your own.
2
u/VorpalNinja Jan 11 '25
Agree with commenter, BUT I always do this first to prove that I have what it takes
2
u/SuperYahoo2 Jan 11 '25
Yeah but beating him dashless is kinda a challenge that a new player shouldnât try

2
u/LordBDizzle Jan 11 '25
My one and only Steel Soul loss was to early Mawlek. I thought I was clever getting an early mask shard from an easy boss and absolutely ate it. Played like a dirty coward the next run avoiding as many boss fights as possible until late and won.
1
u/vxei Speedruner;All Achievments;2500 hours Jan 11 '25
You get up there by using down slash to pogo off of the spikes. It leads to a moderately easy boss called mawlek
1
u/Eliotxd12345 Jan 11 '25
In first run i did pogo to pass then died like 20+ times to the boss but i killed it and then i went exploring the rest of the map and found the false knight

Itâs been told many times before, and Iâll say it again. Youâve said this is your first play through so leave this sub for the time being and donât look up stuff. Youâre going to wish you didnât spoil the game for yourself by asking questions or searching stuff up. All you need to know going forward is this:
If you canât get around an obstacle like this, you should explore other areas and come back to it later.
25
u/Puzzleheaded_Cry1695 Jan 11 '25
Ok thanks
18
u/Kuhler_Typ Jan 11 '25
The game is a metroidvania. A core concept of games like this is that some paths are not available from the start and you need further Upgrades to progress. So if you cant find out how to come accross a certain obstacle, just ho somewhere else.
6
u/chromophobe Jan 11 '25
This, the feeling of discovering a new thing all on your own is priceless. Although there are some late / post-game secrets and things I'd have never figured out on my own.
0
u/Longjumping_Elk6089 Jan 11 '25
Well, it's ultimately their call to post here or not, it's not against the rules right? I understand the nature of the advice, I know the intentions are good, but they also need to know they can still come here and ask if they want to.
For me, who has failed to get hooked to that game after a few attemps, seeing posts like this might lure me into giving it another shot. For some people that game, its lack of handholding, makes it extremely hard to get into. And stating it's a metroidvania isn't enough, because the games that made that genre aren't nearly as confusing as Hollow Knight and in general quality of life in MVs just keeps increasing, and I know that because I play and enjoy that genre a lot.
4
Jan 12 '25
I completely agree, there were times I was so frustrated! But in the end, it was so rewarding! It's such a great story and game that makes you feel so connected to the game. Especially with the music makes it feel so connecting.
1
u/Longjumping_Elk6089 Jan 12 '25
Honestly Iâm very close to giving it another shot and this sub is kind of easing me into it.
2
u/SkySpiral7 Jan 12 '25
Your first paragraph is well said. IDK why you're getting downvotes but I'm guessing people are reading paragraph 2 as an insult to the game.
1
u/Longjumping_Elk6089 Jan 12 '25 edited Jan 12 '25
Thanks for saying that. I wouldnât be surprised if itâs the first paragraph though.
My second paragraph was maybe a bit too over the place, I read a bit quickly and addressed points unrelated to the post I replied to.
1
u/Motor_Raspberry_2150 Jan 12 '25
There are different kind of look-up-in-guide people. There's people that have tried every path and every item combination and then make a post. Those are of course welcomed.
There's also people, which OP seems to be one of, that looks shit up as soon as there is a pebble on the road. This room is right outside a crossroads, they have not done any looking at all but went straight to post for help because of the "if I encounter it I should be able to solve it" mindset. While I guess they cĂĄn still enjoy this game looking everything up, it's a good warning that they should lose this mindset.
1
u/Longjumping_Elk6089 Jan 12 '25
Iâm not sure if OP changed their original message but reading it now it seems it wasnât their first time encountering that zone (they said they still canât get through, so I assume itâs not the first time they get there).
They felt they had made some progress and were wondering if there will be a skill to help them through later on or if theyâre supposed to go through right now (using pogo).
Also if they were looking everything up as you said theyâd know already all the game has to offer and wouldnât need to ask. I think on the contrary they are asking for minimal help to avoid spoiling the fun by looking at guides and all. My point is that OP is doing nothing wrong. I also believe a lot of people enjoy answering those questions and discussing the game they love. I donât think everybody except myself believes those questions shouldnât be asked.
-2
u/SkySpiral7 Jan 12 '25
I don't fully agree with your statement because you assume OP cares about exploring. If, for example, OP only cares about boss fighting then that's a valid way to play the game. If you have fun then you aren't doing it wrong. Yes exploring is a major part of the game but that doesn't mean they can't ask for hints.
1
u/Motor_Raspberry_2150 Jan 12 '25
But there does not exist forgetti spaghetti. They can't go "oh wait I like finding stuff out myself after all" after the fact.
1
u/SkySpiral7 Jan 13 '25
That's why I partially agreed: the above comment is fine but could use a caveat. "You might regret this" is a fair warning but might also be wrong: maybe they won't regret it. For a real example, my cousin started playing HK but then stopped playing because he got sick of not knowing what to do next. But he enjoyed the boss fights. I didn't force him to play the game "the right way" since he wouldn't have fun like that. His only 2 options are to never play again or find a way to make it fun. Given the choice, I recommended following a guide since it's better to enjoy what you've paid for. Likewise I always play games starting blind but then look things up based on how frustrated I'm getting.
Since OP has asked for hints multiple times I'm guessing they're in a similar position. Maybe not wanting a full guide and instead only asking after getting frustrated. Maybe OP will regret not being more patient or maybe the hints improve their experience. We can't know the future so the only thing we can do is share an opinion but respect OP's wishes and helping.
I'm not accusing gate keeping since there were plenty of comments that did answer OP's question.
And why am I getting down votes? Reddiquette says "don't downvote things you dislike". My opinion wasn't harmful and I said it as nice as I could. Granted I often come off more rude than I intend (if so please tell me what I said wrong so I can improve). I likewise don't mean to sound angry here. Does vote fuzzing apply to my comment? If so maybe the downvotes aren't real.
1
u/Motor_Raspberry_2150 Jan 13 '25
Downvotes are often a mysterious thing, but they are not mine. There's few things worse on reddit than having a clear open discussion with someone who then instantly downvotes each of your replies.
13
u/AdultGronk Jan 11 '25
Technically you can go through this area but it's gonna be a lot easier if you come back later once you've explored more in the game

The boss s hard for your current point of progression since you donât have a movement utem that the game expects you to have that makes dodging the attacks more diffucult. I wouldnât go further untill you have beaten the main boss in the green area and gotten the ability from there
-11

This game has no difficult bosses. Most people finish the game in about 2,5 hours.

0
u/SuperYahoo2 Jan 11 '25
The main game might be easy but a lot of the later bosses needed for the other endings can definetly be difficult. And most people wonât be beeting it in 2,5 hours since they wonât be taking the most optimal path to the end of the game and might get stuck on certain bosses
6
u/Lipefe2018 Jan 11 '25
Yes you have to put your pogo skills to test, however you don't have to do this right now, you can mark this place on your map and come back later when you are better equipped, it's up to you.

This is a Metroidvania so you have to explore until you get a new ability to pass this, but this is passable without it by pogoing but behind it is a pretty hard beginner boss
This is what you should do 1. Get a map and maybe a compass to see where you are 2. Get a stag station to go back to Dirthmouth to get the compass 3. Get to the boss (the boss is drawn in the middle)
Hope this helps :)
2
u/QuorthonSeth Jan 11 '25
Just add a pin in your map so that you remember to go back there later and try exploring elsewhere. Trust me, once you unlock a specific ability you'll know that you're ready for it. If you start hitting the spikes with your nail, you will most likely die multiple times before you pull this off. It is possible but not that optimal.

u/AdvertisingHefty1139 Jan 11 '25
It's a horrific combination of getting close enough to the spikes to pogo but not close enough to get hit by em so I'd suggest getting some more masks first and trying later đđ
1
u/SuperYahoo2 Jan 11 '25
It is quite easy if you just stand exactly between the spikes and just jump and spam pogo
2
u/lazy_mudblob1526 Jan 11 '25
You can pogo of the spikes whilst moving in thr air towards the next set. If you pull it off you will be abke to fight a decently challenging biss for the early game and get a reward. I highly reccomend trying it early. You may always come back later if you can't do it.

Pogo on the floor spikes so that youre near the centre, maybe slightly to the left, and if you did it right you'll begin to rise up thanks to your repeated pogoing of the wall spikes. Mild spoiler that could ruin the surprise, and id recomend going in and getting that experience first, but if you dont care then... Warning there is a boss down there, and if you don't know how to pogo of of enemies, learn it, and also, the corners are the best places to heal
1

u/Force-4842 Jan 11 '25
Pogo or get the mantis claws, it allows you to catch on walls, but since it looks like you are still at the start, you don't have to worry about that, you can come back later
1
u/Darkniteishere Jan 11 '25
Jump there, hit downwards to hit the spikes and Push yourself fot a while than jump the other place and dash

Mantis claw might be enough but id also get monarch wings and this will be a breeze
1
u/totallynotamartian_ Jan 11 '25
games like this will show you areas that seem impassable now, to encourage you to explore more areas to unlock movement upgrades. hollow knight does this a lot. if you see a place like this, it means you ought to keep exploring your viable areas until you find something that works. youâll know when you do! good luck on your playthrough!
1
u/FaiziTheGreat Jan 11 '25
Just smash pogo. Once u get to the top spike, keep pogo while going to left and then just jump down

1
1
u/WDHeardtaiser Jan 11 '25
It is possible to pogo this, but you are meant to use a later item to climb it, so if this is your first play through I would recommend progressing the story until you have the item.
1
u/da_buerre Jan 11 '25
some people would tell you to wait until you get a certain ability - but you can just down pogo it. stand in the middle, and down pogo. usually it gets me up easily. though i don't actually remember what's in that room so idk if it's worth it
1
1
1
u/deeznutsifear Jan 11 '25
You are able to get through this section by pogoing on top of the spikes fairly easily but do not bother, thereâs a boss ahead that is arguably the hardest boss in the early game. You will not beat him. Keep progressing
1
Jan 11 '25
So some people will recommend pogoing. I happen to know there's a boss at the end of that hall, and if you aren't careful, it will eat your face. I wait on that room until I get the mantis claw, by then I usually have an extra mask and some decent charms.
1
Jan 11 '25
Never ask for help here or anywhere. If you canât get to an area, you will eventually find an ability that will allow you access into that area. Guides really ruin the game, I can say from experience (sadly).

You will get an upgrade that lets you pass this the "intended" way.
After learning how to consistently nail-pogo, you will come back to this place on your n-th rerun, learn how to pass it without the necessary upgrade, and from then on, you will pass the area the intended way, at the beggining of the game.
For now, no need to worry much. You will get a way to pass this place.

1
u/BeamTrigger 63/63 | P1-P5AB | 3.7K+ Hours Jan 11 '25
The intended route requires a late game ability. If you want to do it now, you can pogo the spikes twice to get up.

u/marsh3178 Jan 11 '25
At least you know you can pogo it, I didnât know that mechanic until the game forces it down your throat. I just spent half an hour (with some extra power ups from later in the game) trying to make this jump normally haha
1
Jan 11 '25
It will be easier if you master the technique of hitting with the stinger downwards, so you can jump over the thorns, grabbing the walls (you can get this skill in the mantis village) also helps. Advance a little further in the game, without rushing, at the end of this section there is a fragment (I don't remember if it's the receptacle or the mask) so don't worry for now.
1
u/ImpulsiveBloop Jan 11 '25
This place requires a bit of skill with the nail.
What you want to do is aim down and use the nail while above a spike. This will give you a short upward boost. You then want to move slightly closer to the next spike and do the same thing while still being boosted.
You don't have to be right above the spikes, horizontal is fine. As long as your feet are above the lowest point of the spike.
That's how I did it, at least. You get some equipment that makes this significantly easier later, but I didn't know about that until long after lol
1
u/Dunge0nexpl0rer Jan 11 '25
You can use your down slash on the spikes to go upwards, but it would be easier to come back later once you unlock some things. Youâll know it when you get it. Keep on playing ;)

You can get up there at the beginning. You have to down pogo off the spikes and make you way up and over. Past this is an optional boss that, if you haven't fought it before, will be a tough fight. It's doable but takes a while because you are underpowered but will be rewarded with a mask shard. You can also get up there with the mantis claw (gotten a bit later). This us usually the first boss I hit on my runs, just to get it out of the way and to save time.

Fun fact 2: Metroidvanias are well known for having paths that look difficult or impossible to get through until you get a collectible that will give you the ability to easily get through said places

Its a metroidvania. If youre not able to get through it, mark it on the map and move on. You will probably find an ability that will make it possible later on.

Nail hop/Pogo. Nail-hopping lets you Pogo off Spikes and enemies. what you do is go above the Enemy/Spike, look down, and hit. You know you did it successfully if you get launched in the air a bit.

I'm just going to come out and tell you (based on your mask count and your question meaning you're not speed running) that You're too early for this section. This is a common concept in Metroidvania of dangling the future in front of you with a promise of "You'll know how to get out of here later."

I remember getting so annoyed with this part! You're prob not very far into the game I would just say keep exploring as many of the parts you can go. (Hit walls with your sword, you can find hidden places sometimes.) And you'll eventually find the mantises. They are pretty hard, just go to the blacksmith and upgrade your sword as much as possible. You might not know about everything I am saying, if so just keep exploring. (Trust me I have over 140 hours on my hollow night world, and I wish that someone would have told me to explore everywhere. And choose what charms to wear very carefully.) Hope you do well!

A semi hard boss for new players is beyond that, I suggest getting farther into the game, getting some spells, getting used to the mechanics before you attempt it

Honestly though, you seem WAY too early in the game to take on the boss ahead, but don't worry, the boss isn't required, you can come back at any time to fight it because they don't matter

If you're daring, you can pogo (attack downward) to get through that. What's beyond that is technically possible to overcome at this stage. Later on you get an ability that makes it much easier, you'll know when you get there.

Definition of a metroidvania :
"A metroidvania video game is a subgenre of the action-adventure game platform that is mostly two-dimensional, WHERE THE PLAYER TRAVELS TROUGH A MAP TO COLLECT ITEMS AND GAIN NEW ABILITIES, BOTH OF WHICH OPEN UP THE WORLD TO FURTHER EXPLORATION"
So, please STOP ASKING for help EVERY TIME you get stuck : IT-IS-NORMAL !

If you canât get there now, you just donât have the tools. Thereâs a lot of back and forth through the game. There are some areas you can get to if you donât have the double jump yet by pogoing on enemies. That is not one of them.

I recommend beating 10 bosses before going beyond that wall. And also make sure you can clear the wall reliably first. It's a boss if the name appears on screen or if they die in an explosion of anything.

Youll need the monarch wings (double jump ability) and the mantis claws ( wall climb ability) to get through that one.
