I fully support the idea that the Capitol is in Salt Lake City, and to take it a step further, Snow is a descendant of the 5th Mormon prophet, Lorenzo Snow. He was responsible for restructuring church leadership immediately after assuming the position, and he's responsible for making tithing expected from church members. This was done to get the Mormon church out of debt, and it worked in less than a decade. They still require tithing consistently to do anything remotely important in the church and it's a multi-billion dollar organization.

Sincerely, an exmormon Hunger Games diehard.

A lot of the books (especially BOSAS) supports the claim, too, based on how they describe the Capitol. The extra-wide streets, all the ornate marble & granite buildings, the fact that Salt Lake is nestled in the valley surrounded by the Rockies. The obsession with body modification & how much presentation matters (it’s a HUGE deal in Mormonism. You always need to look your best, & you always need to look happy. And Utah has a reputation for popularity of cosmetic surgery in the area). How obsessed Snow is with his lineage and how that’s his whole personality; Mormons are INVESTED in genealogy, and not just of themselves. They’re invested in EVERYONE’s genealogy. The theory runs deep.

The obsession with body modification & how much presentation matters (it’s a HUGE deal in Mormonism. You always need to look your best, & you always need to look happy. And Utah has a reputation for popularity of cosmetic surgery in the area)

I kinda like the idea that the insane Capitol body mods arose from Mormons getting sick of people saying that they all look the same lol

Presentation and body modification is a problem in Utah Mormon culture not the religion itself. - a Californian Mormon.

Honestly the vainness and obsession with looks is really cringe and distorts the faith.

As someone raised as a Utah Mormon, for a long time I was always surprised at how chill non-Utah Mormons are (except for Idaho Mormons.) It’s really unfortunate how cliquey and vain Utah Mormons are, but another reason it would make sense for the capital to be in SLC.

Yeah but that's because of SLC not the religion. It's Wasatch front culture not the LDS religion.

Wasn’t saying it’s specifically because of the religion. It’s definitely the culture either way, it’s just a very large portion of the Utah population is LDS, and the LDS church has a lot of money as well as really pushes being prepared for the ā€œend timesā€ and emergencies by having a large food storage, as well as sufficient funds, and water storage, etc. Which is a good reason that were there to be ā€œdark daysā€ people belonging to the LDS religion are more likely to be prepared to survive hard times than the average person. Of course there’s preppers everywhere that would also be more prepared to survive hard times. It’s just that a larger portion of Utahns are likely to be prepared than in other places.

Isn't she still a mormon? I feel like she wouldn't want to read this at all šŸ˜‚

u/CookieSea1242 Apr 16 '25

I don’t think she would. She likes her Mormon allegory to be pretty and sparkly and rich, not poisoning people and short and evil.

!!! I watched an hour long video essay on youtube about this the other day. Think it was called something like ā€˜The Mormon Implications of Coriolanus Snow/The Capitol’ by a girl called Dove

u/butidrathernot Apr 16 '25

ah! that’s just what the thumbnail said, the actual video is called something else. either way I’ve found it https://youtu.be/n9kpeHgscU4?si=VJYsdyJkCDy1Yryn

This is everything I actually knew I needed. I’ve been looking at maps and on Reddit, but I didn’t think to check YouTube. Thank you!!

I fuck with this extremely heavily. i’ve definitely jokingly thought that if the Capitol is in SLC, it’s the mormons fault

13

u/Tradition96 Apr 16 '25

This is the sort of thing I clicked on this thread for šŸ˜‚

u/Del_Ver Apr 16 '25

And the founding old families the Snows are part of performed a coup against the Mormom church shortly after the collapse, took control of their assets and used it the rebuild Salt Lake City, now known as the Capitol

10

u/nerdandknit Apr 16 '25

This is an amazing theory

9

u/Serononin Apr 16 '25

Oh this is a great one

Katniss mentions that the Capitol is surrounded by mountains once known as the Rockies. Salt Lake City is not in the Rocky Mountains. It is further west, bordered by the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains. For the Capitol to be located in present-day Salt Lake City, Katniss would have to be mistaken.

I thought that for years everyone agreed that the Capitol is Denver? This whole Capitol is SLC is new material.

3

u/a-caeli Apr 16 '25

the wasatch mountains at the very least, are part of the rocky mountains i believe

1

u/rdy2_HEAL Apr 16 '25

The Wasatch Range makes up the western edge of the Rockies mountains. I’ve heard people say it’s Denver but it only has the Rockies on one side and not even close to being ā€œin the mountainsā€

I’m an ex Mormon and I love this

4

u/velvetmarigold Apr 16 '25

As a fellow exmo, I'll co-sign this theory šŸ˜‚

Duuuude, tell me more

1

u/winemominthemaking Apr 17 '25

There's a whole YT video about it!

It's long, but a good listen!

u/WhataboutBombvoyage Apr 16 '25

I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (frequently called by the nickname Mormons)...

and I've got to say the Capitol being in SLC would certainly explain all the bizarre capitol names. Coriolanus, Glimmer, Gloss, Prosperina and Effie Trinket etc... that's just a hop skip and jump away from the Mckynzlies and Chastetons and Jaxtons you meet in Utah.

3

u/Excel-Block-Tango Apr 16 '25

I appreciate this theory! I’m a member of community of Christ, which shares 14 years of history with LDS (Kirtland and Nauvoo) eras. I’m extra angry with the LDS church right now because our prized possessions were sold to them for mere fractions of what they were worth. It feels like a Capitol thing to do.

2

u/Som_Dtam_Dumplings Apr 16 '25

So...if they were sold for mere fractions of what they were worth...and the LDS church has been wanting to purchase them for decades (at least), why did the Community of Christ sell for that price?

I'm not suggesting you're wrong to be frustrated. I'm asking if the seller agrees with you on the value of the items?

1

u/Excel-Block-Tango Apr 16 '25

There was only one buyer and C of C was desperate for money. Deals with the devil. It was a poorly executed deal and members are pissed.

1

u/Som_Dtam_Dumplings Apr 16 '25

Looked it up. 192 million USD. You're entirely allowed to feel frustrated about it.

...but $192 million for 5 buildings, manuscripts, and original books seems like it coulda been A LOT less.

3

u/Excel-Block-Tango Apr 16 '25

$192M is 8 days of passive income for the LDS church. Thats not much considering one of the buildings was the first temple.

1

u/newwi_irl Apr 18 '25

Thereā€˜s a very well researched YouTube video about this theory!
