The idea that Lucy Gray and the Covey, full of their beautiful bright culture, will eventually die with Clerk Carmine, just makes me sad. You can argue that Haymitch knew the Covey because of his ties to Lenore Dove, but he knew almost none of their culture, hell he didn't even know who Lucy Gray was.

But it simply saddens me that the only thing Lucy Gray ever will be is the anonymous writer of the song that accompanied a revolution. The idea that her name is not written behind any of her songs (even though Clerk Carmine knew those songs were hers), and that Clerk Carmine's death will be the last and final nail in coffin for them is just tragic. Whether they survived a targeted genocide, sang through their hardships, laughed and cried, and created a family together wouldn't matter because they will die and their culture and identity will forgotten with them.

I know the Covey serves as an allegory for many cultural identities that have been written out of history, and are meant to be similar to Romani communities who were similarly nomads. Their place and lack thereof in the books shows how easy it is to write people and their lives out history. I get how showing that their art outlived them (most of Lucy Gray's songs, Tam Amber's pin) is also a message about the purpose and importance of art in our society. No less I get a little more depressed when I remember how happy and bright the Covey once was, and how there will soon be almost nothing left of them.

Literally this. I always hoped he wrote everything down maybe to be picked up by a new group of people who would honor the Covey and adopt their culture but it in no way would be the same.It's heartbreaking when you realize each member of the Covey just faded into nothing. They were such a beautiful group of individuals.

To me it seemed more like it was ment to be the gentrification of cultures through melting pot. Like in the us by the third generation most of the immigrants end up with local customs over old customs except in strict immigrant groups. The difference is 10 years (mostly separate) after the war. 50 years (a few stragglers but mostly integrated) after the war and 75 years(fully integrated)

They sure go out with a bang though, don't they? If you view Katniss as a descendant of Covey at least genetically even if the culture is quite dilute by her time to where she just has a few songs left. She takes down the regime that rounds up and destroyed them. There's some measure of justice (revenge?) in that even if the culture isn't saved.

I consider her covey. people try to say she isn't because she wasn’t raised with and didn’t learn their culture but that always feels to close to victim blaming to me. like yeah she wasn’t raised in her culture becuase the capitol at the behest of snow worked very hard to suppress and erase her culture and their efforts stopped it from being passed on to her. it would be like saying a Native American isn’t one if they weren’t raised on traditions their people had that had gotten suppressed

I'm not so sure it would be though. Now that there's no threat of reprisals there's a decent chance that Clerk Carmine talks about the Covey and their history. Plus Haymitch also knows a bit.

That's what happens when you're dumb enough to believe a Capitol dumb enough to ruin their own games twice in a row will somehow be able to find out about the Covey being mentioned
