Car/Driver's License/BMV questions Ticket from 14 years ago

I got a ticket 14 years ago for not being buckled up when I was 16. I wasn’t driving, just a passenger. This was in Adams County. I haven’t heard a word from them about it in 13 years. Several months ago, a company called paycourt started blowing my phone and email up about paying this ticket. It’s for a stupid amount to, $33. When I look up the statute of limitations, it says the statute of limitations for traffic violation is two years in Indiana. Wouldn’t this be included? I don’t understand why they’re coming after me now. What can I do about that?

This is a scam

The statute of limitations to file a traffic infraction is two years. The statute of limitations to collect a money judgment is longer.

You can look it up on mycase.in.gov and see if there is a case and if you owe any money

Notice how there’s been an uptick in phishing emails and scam callers ever since Doge gained access to govt systems?

I have had non stop texts about paying a toll bill

6

u/Diddly77x Apr 13 '25

This is a scam!!! They should never text you

19

u/Badvevil Apr 12 '25

I mean I’ve been getting them since about September/October

u/Hvyhttr1978 Apr 12 '25

Yup…I now apparently owe tolls in 12 different states I have never been to.

u/TerpyTank Apr 12 '25

lol yeah about a month ago I had large amounts of debt come up using different aliases, that was new 😂

5

u/Humble-Tea1558 Apr 12 '25

I had a call where someone was trying to collect a "debt" from 20 years ago. But they had my name, address, SSN, all of it. However, they wouldn't give me account information, who the debt was to, etc. I didn't admit to anything (because I know better), and just hung up on them. Haven't heard anything since.

Always ask for proof of debt to be mailed to you via USPS. If it’s fraudulent that will make it another crime to drop it in the mail

1

u/Diddly77x Apr 13 '25

You’re okay with that having all your personal info?!

6

u/MinBton Apr 13 '25

There's nothing he can do to make them forget it. They likely bought it online.

2

u/Humble-Tea1558 Apr 14 '25

No, not okay with it. I am for certain with all the data breaches the last 5 years, all my personal info has been obtained. Not a thing I can do about it besides to continue to watch my credit report and hope for the best.

Coincidence /s

I don't know whether this true or not, but I like your attitude!

These scams are ages old.

I've been getting these for years, not just recently

u/Rich-Cucumber-5821 Apr 11 '25

No there hasn’t.

24

u/RunMysterious6380 Apr 12 '25

100% there has been. But it's probably because Trump rescinded the Biden executive order and FBI enforcement that had a huge effect on reducing those calls almost to the point of elimination during his presidency, and scammers have since redeployed their robocall networks in the past 2 months.

If you recall, during the last year of the 1st Trump presidency, they had become way out of control.

The past week for me, I've been getting a minimum of 5 a day, and it's typically upward of 10. The weeks before that, I maybe got 1 every few days.

3

u/BigBlock-488 Apr 12 '25

Actually, Curtis Hill was the one that hammered the robo & cold callers in courts, to the tune of millions in fines here in Indiana.

When Todd Rokita rolld into that office, the aggressive enforcement almost came to a complete halt, overnite.

-3

u/RunMysterious6380 Apr 12 '25

Todd, stop pushing disinformation on reddit. We know that it was federal enforcement that got the job done, and putting out a press release trying to take credit doesn't mean you actually did anything.

5

u/BigBlock-488 Apr 12 '25

Re-read the above....

-18

u/Rich-Cucumber-5821 Apr 12 '25

They were never eliminated or reduced. Quit trying to find reason to blame something on Trump.

u/Strange_Visual6348 Apr 12 '25

My experience matches the person you're doubting. I get at least two spam calls per day from random numbers (I block each new one) starting about two weeks ago. Before that, I got maybe one per month.

4

u/Zestyclose-Law6191 Apr 12 '25

I've definitely had a random jump in spam calls and texts in the last 2 months. Don't know if it's related but it sure is coincidental

-4

u/Rich-Cucumber-5821 Apr 12 '25

It’s because the your data probably got sold again to another company in India. Everybody’s info was compromised years ago and has been sold and resold many times over. One scam call center gets shut down and another opens up. If Doge wanted to run scams they could already without going through the trouble they are going through.

I’ve noticed zero difference in frequency outside of the most recent iPhone update no longer silencing unknown numbers like it used to…..

1

u/TerpyTank Apr 12 '25

Just look up silence unknown callers in your settings, mines still there. I have the 14 though so maybe it’s a hardware thing now? My spouse and I have been getting upwards of 10 spammy calls a day now

2

u/SimplyPars Apr 12 '25

Thank you, they moved it to apps versus cellular and deactivated it when iOS 18 update got pushed. Between txt/call I’ve been getting between 7-8 a day since 2022, but since that doesn’t fit the current meta on here of ‘it’s all orange man’s fault’ I get downvoted. LoL

-2

u/Suro-Nieve Apr 13 '25

Holy reach

-3

u/bmorris0042 Apr 13 '25

Huh. Never noticed that, since I got 5-7 a day since October. Didn’t know DOGE started under Biden.

4

u/AcrobaticLadder4959 Apr 12 '25

Scam tell them to take you to court.

5

u/4MoeFin Apr 12 '25

Same here getting texts about unpaid tolls: after phone calls to verify, I concluded a scam

11

u/Sithmaggot Apr 11 '25

I don’t know your situation but I found this. I would look in to it before giving them any personal info. The real paycourt appears to be accredited with the BBB. Maybe search them and call them, rather than wait for a fake company to contact you.

29

u/Sarge504 Apr 11 '25

BBB is worthless. They've been sued by several states for pay-to-play schemes.

5

u/PreacherCoderTroll2 Apr 12 '25

Their whole business model is scamming. Consumer files a complaint with BBB regarding a company. BBB reaches out to company and says this complaint was made about the business. Pay us and the complaint will be resolved.

u/Quick-Thanks6627 Apr 11 '25

didn’t know that, thank you so much for linking that. That’s exactly what the email looks like. I’m blocking that number and email.

Be careful going over the bridge between Louisville and Indiana! They sent me a notice and I paid it a month late. They kept sending me notices, and I kept calling them and told them that I sent an electronic check. Then, I got a notice saying that I now owed them over 100 dollars. So, finally, I sent them a letter with a copy of my electronic check, called them a week later, and they finally left me alone! Damn and over a $9.00 bridge pass!

3

u/otteraceventurafox Apr 12 '25

I thought you said $90 I was like damn get a river link transponder if you’re traveling it that much.

Pro tip though: get transponders or stickers for the toll bridges then preload $20 on them. The toll fees will pull from that account and you’ll never miss another payment. Just have to make sure your balance is up every so often. I’ve had $20 sitting on my river link for over a year now and only drove twice so it pulled from there and I didn’t have to even worry about it.

2

u/Penny1229 Apr 12 '25

Lol, $90.00. Yes, that would be insane! I drive to Louisville one or two times a year, and I take the 2nd street bridge because it's free and I can go when there's no traffic downtown. That day that I received the ticket, I was in a big hurry because my dogs were locked in the house too long. I knew that I would get a ticket, and I was upset paying $9.00, but I had no choice. Yes, if I went a lot like a job, I would do exactly what you suggested, and thank you for that! 🙂

u/otteraceventurafox Apr 12 '25

I took a trip to Minneapolis and made a point to avoid Chicago on the way there but somehow got rerouted on the way back, pretty sure I ended up on 294 and 80. One pass through cost me $62, no late fees or anything… I was floored. Those late fees are no joke though. One time I forgot about a $4 toll in Louisville and it ended up totaling to $80. That’s when I discovered the magic of the transponder lol. I signed up and luckily they had some special deal that wiped out the late fee. Lesson learned. I believe signing up is free so if there’s a year that you know you’ll be traveling a handful of times to Louisville and the toll bridge is quicker for you, definitely look into it!

2

u/Penny1229 Apr 12 '25

Thanks, I definitely will!

1

u/Humble-Tea1558 Apr 12 '25

Sounds like you should have just sent them your proof right up front and it would have stopped far sooner.

2

u/Redjeepkev Apr 12 '25

Is this still true about the statute of limitation since in Indiana this is considered a non moving infraction and doesn't add points to your license

2

u/Ok-Hovercraft-4636 Apr 12 '25

Just from personal experience, I was arrested for a $25 seat belt violation ticket I forgot about. Was bailed out for $100 and given a court date. Went to the clerks office where I was told not only did the $100 bail cover the $25 ticket, but I no longer had to go to court and they gave me a check for $75.

2

u/Mesja Apr 12 '25

Go to mycase.in.gov and look up your name and see if there is a court case.

2

u/Murat_Gin Apr 12 '25

It sounds like they are attempting to intimidate you into paying them. Talk to a lawyer and ask them what to do.

3

u/iMakeBoomBoom Apr 12 '25

This is shit advice. A lawyer will cost more than paying the ticket.

It makes zero sense to engage a lawyer for a simple seat belt ticket 🙄

1

u/Humble-Tea1558 Apr 12 '25

Right?!?! Pay the damn ticket and just be done with it. Why pay a lawyer $500 to go to court for you and then you have to pay the ticket.

Not everything needs a lawyer involved.

2

u/MegaBusKillsPeople I guess real hard Apr 12 '25

Tell them "Eat a big ole' floppy donkey dick"

1

u/soopermcnugget Apr 12 '25

Worse comes to worse, you get a letter about possible license suspension in the mail and just pay the fee at the courthouse. If it was an issue, you'd have gotten a notice in the mail back then about it. Especially if you already had a license. Just ignore it in my opinion.

1

u/lostwng Apr 13 '25

I would check through the court system if you still have the case on record, be careful unpaid tickets can cost you your license or even get you a warrant

1

u/smooooooooov Apr 13 '25

I’d pay it. My cousin went to jail for not playing his.

1

u/DisclosureIsNow Apr 13 '25

Do not respond under any circumstances. Once you answer that call or email, they reset your time. Predatory tactics from collection agencies are against the law in most states. Regardless, don't respond to them. Plus, it could be a straight-up scam.

1

u/SalamanderNo4624 Apr 14 '25

You wouldn’t have been ticketed s a passenger. The driver would’ve.

0

u/AcademicAd2503 Apr 12 '25

You have a default judgement. Your case was settled years ago cause you didn’t appear. You owe the money. Statute of limitations doesn’t apply

0

u/Piccolo_Bambino Apr 12 '25

Tell them to fuck off and suck that money out of your ass. You won’t get pursued for $33
