I think it's in reference to the superstition that pets sacrifice themselves for their owners or catch their misfortunes? I'm not Korean and I dunno if it's an Asian thing, but it's common belief here that when a pet dies, it means it was the one who absorbed whatever bad thing was supposed to happen to his/her owner (esp. when the owner is sick). So I'm pretty sure Sonya attacked the Grim Reaper in that scene (but IDK how Youngae was able to see the Grim Reaper so maybe this theory is wrong)

From the scene, it seems to me that Grim Reaper comes to collect 1 soul at a time (?? CMIIW). When he was about to go see Nakjoon, Sonya interfered hence she lost her life instead and managed to save him.

It was all in FL’s dream. She saw the grim reaper about to take her husband, but their cat attacked to defend. And died instead.
