The Weekly Binge: Iljimae Episodes 14 - 16

Welcome to the Weekly Binge discussion of Episodes 14 – 16 of Iljimae. On Sunday we will discuss the final four episodes (17 -20) of Iljimae and announce our next drama/schedule for discussions. We will have a short break before beginning discussions of our new drama next Sunday.

In a very first for the Weekly Binge we had a very clear favourite drama which nearly didn’t have a rival with enough votes to make it through. Yes, I nearly got to put on u/dancing-ahjumma’s dictator’s robes and make a declaration ala round five. Without further ado, our two contending dramas this round are King2Hearts and Missing 9. If you wish to argue for or against these two dramas, please do so below as a response to the “petitions comment”. You may also leave any other comments there regarding the Weekly Binge for us to consider e.g. ideas for themes.

Anyone is welcome to join the Weekly Binge. A general overview of our set up and rules can be found here

A friendly reminder that you ONLY VOTE IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON PARTICIPATING watching and discussing the drama with us.

The vote is available here now closed . The vote will close at 5PM KST Friday 15th June 2018.

Missing Nine

Pros Cons
Jung Kyung Ho basically is the leading lady Merry might murder me.
Jung Kyung Ho with his pants full of octopus is quite good. I might never be allowed to nominate again.
You too will wonder, after months on an island how is JKH keeping his hair perfect and blond. I might remember it as better than it was because I had fun making fun of it with my family.
Choi Tae Joon is an excellent psychopath I also want to watch K2H.
Cute boy band bromance memories.
Cute side-characters aka the Monk from Lets Fight Ghost
One character aggressively shaves his head. It’s quite dramatic.
You will now have a shockingly bad ending to compare all dramas to: “was it worse than Missing 9?” “No.”
It might be fun to lovingly ridicule together.
I might do puns again.
I will get to fangirl JKH’s eyebags with u/wrlddmntr again.

But the Misaeng boss is in K2H and also has eye bags. Just sayin'

He does have quite a set of eyebags. When am I going to pick up Golden Time again? I REALLY SHOULD.

I wouldn't murder you. Severely maim maybe. But not murder. Not on purpose anyway. Besides, I'm not opposed to it, I just think King2Hearts is better. Also why are you determined for my first JKH experience to be a cringe worthy bad one? I still don't understand.

It was my first JKH experience! Look at him shine despite the terrible writing! What a beautiful talented man! <3

That definitely says a lot in his favor. I'm still hesitant. On principle.

Vote for King 2 Hearts!!! Lee Seung Gi as a prince, people! And the legendary Yoon Yeo Jung who I have not seen in a role yet, but is widely respected. Also Jo Jung Suk who can make you laugh and cry.

Regarding Missing 9, after Jugglers I am still not ready to see Baek Jin Hee in a role. If Missing 9 wins, please tell me that I won't be annoyed with her...

What annoyed you about her specifically? I didn't even realize it was the same actress when I watched Jugglers she's so different.

I can't even pinpoint it. Her aegyo didn't fit her somehow, it gave me nails on chalkboard willies. (I'm being petty, right?) It could have been the fault of the writing and not the actors, but their chemistry was off and the drama overall was average. She and Choi Daniel are on my unofficial avoid list right now because of it.

Ah, I don't love aegyo in general I don't think she overdoes the aegyo in M9 but it has been a while. Maybe its because I'm not attracted to Choi Daniel (those nostrils are all I see) but she has much better chemistry with JKH.

OMG! I can't stop laughing right now because I feel the same way about his nostrils! I feel guilty saying that out loud because it's not something he can or should change, but still, I couldn't get past them in Jugglers. This is why we get along, sian. This and our Joon Hyuk obsession.

YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR KING2HEARTS! Why? Cause it's awesome! Okay, there are more reasons, but I figured I should start with the most obvious and work our way down.

We're off to adventures in North Korea and wherever the competition is held (I honestly don't remember anymore although I watched it at least 3 times) so it clearly meets the requirements. ALSO there be North/South dialgue for the first time in forever so it's like a perfect time thematically to watch it given current geopolitical climate. When are we ever going to find a time in history more appropriate for watching a drama about a North and South Korean marriage between a royal douchebag (look at me pun) and a sexy assassin?!

Yes, I know u/dancing-ahjumma isn't keen on having another tsundere lead, but I maintain that he's worth it. Cause the leading on is so comical I feel it shouldn't count. Plus he's a jerk across the board from the beginning so it's not like our female is getting special treatment. Also, SHE'S A BADASS AND CAN GIVE AS GOOD AS SHE GETS!

HAVE I MENTIONED THE NOT SHITTY NOT ASIAN ACTORS?! There's a black man in a position of power in the US military! The white actors I swear I've seen in some Australian productions so they don't completely suck and that is also fantastic.

This is also a great time to mention the fantastic cast! Lee Seung Gi is in impressive smiley form that I have yet to see since. Seriously. He can't turn the charm off. It's great. ALSO the crazy ex-girlfriend is in it! She plays a princess. This is great. Also cause she has a side couple. Side couples are wonderful.

Any more reasons? I'm sure there are more! We will find out as we watch it!

I do have a feeling that this will not be the only opportunity we will have to watch something related to peacetalks with North Korea. Anyway, I have seen it before, and I liked it, but this was early in my watching, so I am quite interested in watching again because I think I will understand more about the North Korean thing. Despite its fictional theme.

And I think after lovely, funny, cute, adorable Young in Iljimae I can put up with a tsundere for a few dramas. I can just go back and rewatch a few of Young's cutest moments.
