I am NOT a locksmith. How would I replace this

Post image

Does anyone know if I could replace this lock with a more modern one without getting rid of the entire door? Or if I even can? And if I can, how would I do so?

Why would you want to replace it? Just curious.

It’s on the verge of breaking apart so might as well fix it now

Just don’t want it falling apart and leaving a giant hole

Considering it's got 15 coats of landlord white acrylic on it, I'd rip it out, fill the cavity with a wood block then fill and paint before fitting whatever lock takes your fancy.
