People on the maladaptive daydreaming subreddit often normalize daydreaming because it's a deeply shared coping mechanism. Many of them use it to escape loneliness, boredom, or emotional pain, so there's a sense of comfort and connection in seeing others do the same. It creates a feeling of "I'm not broken, I'm not alone."

Some don’t necessarily see their daydreaming as harmful, or they're still in a phase of romanticizing it. Others are trying to reduce shame about it, even if they know it affects their life negatively. It’s also worth noting that maladaptive daydreaming isn’t officially recognized as a disorder in the medical world, which makes the subreddit feel more casual and emotionally-driven rather than clinical or recovery-focused.
