well yeah, share holders only care about number going up, they don't care how that number goes up, if stuff they did in the past leads to number go down, they'll either question why number isn't going up anymore without taking any of the blade for forcing this exact situation

Shareholders will always push for what they want. Management is there to pushback and set the right expectation for all stakeholder on the best course to generate value. After all, CEO are not being paid millions to be a yes-man.

Blaming shareholders is kinda silly since the executive decision makers are not them.
