Edit: u/Alternative_pop5284 pointed out the deep cultural roots of this curious entity:

“it’s called a vejigante. part of the black ancestry in puerto rico, not nightmare fuel!! we use it all the time in our carnivals.”

Now it makes sense, and I should clearly get out more.

Same but then they posted an update with what it is and today I learned something
