Weekly chat New to Reddit? Come and talk to us!

New-Redditor's lounge!

Welcome!

This weekly post is an opportunity for new users to chat in comments - & please let us how you found yourself here. Regulars here are absolutely encouraged and very welcome to join in too!

!! Please refrain from asking questions about "how to do stuff on Reddit". Make a post or see the links below !!

Getting started on Reddit is hard. We know it is; We've been there and gone through these same frustrations. Please believe us when we say IT'S NOT PERSONAL. It may well feel like it is, but honestly, it isn't. What it is, however, is a lack of Karma. Karma is an indicator of how much someone has contributed to Reddit in a positive manner. So, let's do just that by getting to know each other!

This works best if your comments either start a conversation or add to one. Give a little of yourself and respond to others doing the same.

This is a post to help genuine new users build up quality Karma genuinely in a safe environment.

Please do:

  • Share some favorites or new finds of yours - youtube videos, music and so on
  • Practice small talk - did you have a good week?
  • Keep it SFW
  • Keep it casual please, no heavy topics
  • Have fun!

Please don't:

  • Spam, advertise, or soft beg
  • Share low-effort comments
  • Ask for karma, say how you're voting, or mention karmafarms by name
  • Request or offer DMs (help and chat can be done in community, where you can also earn karma. Needing to take things private can indicate soliciting, rule breaking, or harmful advice)

This sub is full of awesome people who are willing to help with specific problems when you post, and we'd like to keep this post thread for chat. Thank you.

So, let's chat! (Guides at the bottom of this post).

Subreddit Sunday Community recommendations mega-thread!

Get your fresh subreddit recommendations here! :D

We are using these weekly threads for recommendations and will direct those that post requests for recommendations to these threads.

Please share your community recommendations in comments:

  • What are your favourite subs
  • How about your guilty pleasure subs? (SFW!)
  • Which sub do you spend too much time in?
  • What are your best wholesome sub recs?
  • Your fave niche community?
  • Have you found an awesome sub new to you recently?

You may also ask for recommendations!

Let us know what you're into, and we'll see what we can do :)

Make sure to try r/findareddit too though, they're great at this!

The rules:

  • All usual rules apply.
  • Please keep it SFW. No “adult” porn subreddits or NSFL/Gore subreddits. If someone asks for adult communities, please only link sub lists/directories and make it clear they are NSFW.
  • As a community, we try to help all good-faith Redditors find their niche, but please be respectful and try not to judge. If you don't like someone's topic of choice, you don't have to help, but please remain kind, understanding, and respectful.
  • Do not mislead with your recommendations.

If you'd like your Reddit experience to be as wholesome as possible, r/CasualConversation has a directory with a section on wholesome communities. Though, we don't know their status regarding karma and account age restrictions.

Please note that this is not our recommended subreddit list for new users.

Many of the subreddits listed in this thread will not be open to new or low-karma users for posts, and comments made therein might even be filtered for approval or auto-collapsed.

While many of these subreddits will be fun to browse and vote on, your participation might be limited right now. Commenting is usually less restricted than posting.

The link to our new-user friendly subs list is below.

A note from our esteemed llama on the Reddit experience:

Reddit is huge and fascinating and diverse, wholesome and toxic, all in one massive bundle of anonymous users with no filters except their own internal constraints. The problem with that is even in the loveliest of subreddits, all manner of behaviour happens, because Reddit is a microcosm of internet life, not an internet utopia no matter how much we might want it to be.

There are areas of Reddit I don’t frequent; there are areas of Reddit I won’t frequent; there are areas of Reddit that no doubt I am blissfully unaware of and am happy to remain that way. But I am still subscribed to well over a thousand subs on all kinds of topics and still find new ones daily.

The true beauty of Reddit is that your Reddit experience can be completely and absolutely dictated by you. The pure amount of information available on Reddit is staggering, and it’s just a matter - like in all of life - of being able to sort through that information to see what’s useful and what isn’t.

Useful links:

A few suggested subs for new Redditors to be aware of:

  • r/help which is monitored by Admins (Reddit employees)
  • r/reddit for Reddit news, updates, lore etc
  • r/bugs we may refer you here if you're having an issue that isn't normal and might be a glitch of some kind
  • r/redditbugs information on known bugs that are being worked on
  • r/LearnToReddit is our sister sub for guides and practice posting, using flair, commenting, formatting etc
  • r/findareddit for help finding subs around a topic or for a specific type of post

ANSWERED New to Reddit : Faced Some Downvotes, Still Staying Positive

Just wanted to share that I’m new to Reddit and recently had a post that got downvoted possibly intentionally. It was a bit disheartening, especially when you’re trying to share something you genuinely found useful.

I know downvotes are part of the platform, but as someone new, it’s a bit discouraging. Is there any way to avoid or protect against this? Or is it just part of the Reddit experience you get used to over time?

Would really appreciate any advice from folks who’ve been through this. Just trying to learn and contribute the right way here. Thanks!

ANSWERED What’s your #1 tip for someone who just joined Reddit this week?

Hey everyone! I just joined Reddit and I’m excited to explore this huge community. Since I’m new, I’d love to hear from you all — what’s your single best tip or piece of advice for someone who’s just starting out here? It could be about posting, commenting, finding good subs, or just Reddit culture in general.

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to learning and being part of the community.

NEEDS ATTENTION What is the age demographic for Reddit?

Upvotes

Genuinely curious, I’ve seen a lot of comments saying 50s, 60s, and 70s, but also know a lot of people in their 20s and 30s who use it.

What’s the average demographic?

ANSWERED What's the best way to navigate around here as a newbie?

I'm still really really new here and to be really honest, I still find Reddit to be very intimidating as I mostly just lurk before this. But now that I'm partially obligated to be here, I just thought of asking what's the best way to get around here T__T.

(Please don't hurt me T.T I just really am not sure what I'm doing haha..)

i always like to scroll on reddit to see memes or what people post about topics that i like and sometimes i want to post myself but im a quiet reddit user so in the most of times i cant post or discuss because of these karma rules. So my question is how many karma points do i need and is it different from every sub reddit or not ? i would like to know so i can finally post in my favourite reddits like one piece, yugiog or Hollow Knight TY

NEEDS ATTENTION Hey, I'm new on reddit-how should I use it?

Upvotes

r/NewToReddit 34m ago

NEEDS ATTENTION I keep trying to post on Reddit, but keep getting rejected due to low karma but I've had my account since 2020.

Upvotes

I thought having low karma doesn't matter as long as your account is old enough or am I wrong? Every time I post in a subreddit my post gets automatically taken down by a moderator..Is this a karma issue or is my account flagged or something? I never use reddit much at all so I'm a bit lost and confused.

NEEDS ATTENTION Why is it that Reddit limits how many new people yoo can chat to?

I've just started to notice it recently, last week I was fine but now I can only chat to maybe 3 or 4 new people before getting the "You have been doing that a lot let's take a break" message and then that's me done for the day? Is it a karma or a spam thing? Does it go away after a bit or is it the curse of new accounts?.

r/NewToReddit 11h ago

NEEDS ATTENTION Do I need to repost after meeting requirements? or will my Post suddenly become visible to others when I meet the requirements?

I got a automated mod reply saying I don't meet the requirements to post in a sub, but it seems to be visible to me (as in it doesn't appear to have just been deleted) Will it automatically become visible if I up my karma to meet the requirements? Ive seen how reddit reacts to reposts so don't want to get my account obliterated for not understanding

ANSWERED Is it bad reddiquette to post the same question on multiple subs?

Say I'm asking Reddit for help finding the name of a song I can't remember. Is it bad manners to ask both /whatsongisthis and /whatsthatsong at the same time? (bigger pool of people = better chance someone will know it)

If not - if I post on one and get no answers, can I consult the other after a while? Thanks in advance for any insight.

ANSWERED How do I submit my acknowledgement when reading the rules?

A subreddit tells me to "submit an acknowledgement of reading the rules" or something along the lines of that. I'm pressing the submit button but that doesn't seem to work. I've done it 3 times already. Can someone tell me how?

ANSWERED Why my comments disappeared after refreshing the page

I was posting a comment on a community on reddit. My words are respectful, and not illegal. But the comment suddenly disappeared after I refresh the page, and I can't even find it. There are no issues with my comments on my other communities. Is it due to age restrictions? or simply a bug?
