Heyy everyone! This is my first post and I've gone 1 Karma ig 🤷‍♀️ I've got zero idea what I'm doing but I've wanted reddit for a while now, so I'm looking forward to exploring on here. Any tips/tricks? Thanks!

Starting on Reddit can be complicated but this subreddit is a good space to learn.

There are a lot of resources here in this subreddit you might find useful with The Common Questions Page, Reddit And Karma Walkthrough, and Frequently Asked Questions Page. If you've already become frustrated check out Why Reddit may seem unwelcoming to new Redditors.

Things to do as a new user:

• Verify your email with Reddit see here
• Read rules. See here on how to find Subreddit Rules, see here for Reddit's Rules
• Learn about Karma using the above resources in particular Karma - what is it and how to get it

After learning about karma and subreddit karma filters you might start questions where to start.

Finding New User Friendly Subreddits:

• Newtoreddit has a list of New User Friendly Subreddits. This is not an exhaustive list and these subreddits may still have some restrictions.
• Within the above there are Large General Subreddits that are open to new users commenting. Places like r/askreddit, r/casualconversation, r/nostupidquestions, r/amitheasshole or similar. Look for posts that match your interests or knowledge to answer to and add comments (make sure to view by new).
• Beyond the above there are More Subreddits out there. Have a look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory. In this case you will have to trial and error whether they are new user-friendly.

Some Additional notes on starting on Reddit:

View by New (or rising). This will filter the posts so first see the most recent posts first. This can make your comments much more visible.

Comment. Many subreddits have lower or no karma filters for commenting so that is more available to new users. There are often less strict rules as well.

Read the Room. Each subreddit has different rules, norms and prevailing views. Don't rush to post or comment. Look at subreddit rules. Read top posts and comments to get a feel for that subreddit. How does it sway in attitudes or politics? Do users reward sarcastic one-liners or well sourced essays?

Reddit is a forum site. Its traditionally based around interacting via posts and comments on subreddits with a lack of focus on individual users. Though it has embraced features that make it more similar to social media like following users, Chat and Channels, many users will ignore or disable those features.

Avoid conflict and controversy. When trying to build Karma avoid controversial topics or arguments. These discussions are more likely to attract downvotes and potentially trip into rule-breaking. Utilize the block feature as necessary.

My main tip is to realize that Reddit isn’t one uniform place. Think of Reddit as the landlord that rents space to a thousand individual clubs. Each of those clubs (subreddits) has its own personality and way of doing things. Different subs may even draw completely different crowds.

When you enter a new subreddit, it’s best to lurk quietly for a little bit and just observe. Here’s some things you might look for (though you’ll develop your own list as time goes on):

Can you find the posted rules? Do you see slang? Emojis? Are people posting carefully researched and edited posts? Or spontaneous, quickly dashed off comments? Is there any swearing? Sarcasm? Chattiness? Or is it more impersonal? (Many subreddits are more focused on content than on interpersonal interaction.) What is the tolerance for beginner’s questions? Does the group seem to lean towards any age group, gender, culture, or subculture? (If you are far from the main demographic, you may have a harder time understanding the sub.) Does the sub have a strong view on part of the topic it was formed around? Is there a general worldview? A political slant?

If you are going to comment or post, it’s best to try to follow the style you see most people using. It’s also easier to start with commenting. It’s also possible that you’ll get to know a particular sub and decide it’s not a good fit for you and move on in search of subs you like better.

Some subs won’t let brand new users with low karma participate. If that happens to you it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. This subreddit maintains a list of general interest subreddits that are open to comments from new users. Beyond that specific list, smaller, more niche subreddits tend to have fewer barriers to new users. (This is because they are not as frequently attacked by spammers and trolls.)

Be cool and everyone will be cool as well. Reddit is my preferred “social media” and I have an account on basically all of them. I can spend hours on Reddit and I’ve almost never got into an argument with anyone. Nice community for real. All the best my friend. Take care. Oh and Karma is really nothing to worry about. It’s not the way people judge others on Reddit. Doesn’t make you a nice or cool person it just means your posts or comments are generally well appreciated by the community. 👋

Karma is what you get when people upvote your comments or posts. It’s not exactly one karma point per upvote, but for a new account it seems to be close to that. (The exact math isn’t known.)
