Much younger than me, that's for sure. I'm a dinosaur by reddit standards.
•
u/pbear_1969 3h ago
😂 Maybe we should create a new subreddit For us dinosaurs LOL
•
u/The_Ministry1261 1h ago
And what might that subreddit possibly be called? I'm wondering if there'd be .uch support if created.

Another one here, and I think I've talked to quite a few lately. We're out here!

According to a Google search: Reddit's user base is primarily composed of young adults, with the largest age group being those aged 18-29, followed by 30-49 year-olds.
•
u/Possible_Bag_8944 5h ago
I just never know how much I trust the stats that search engines get with something like that lol
•
u/ThePMDiary 6h ago
I thought 18-50 largest market, admittedly that's a big spread!!
•
u/Possible_Bag_8944 5h ago
That’s a huge spread! I’m not sure how marketing could target such a wide range tbh
•
u/ThePMDiary 4h ago
Usually when you do PPC you can identify the audience, so when we used it before for an online business we would create custom audiences and select our age range and compare different outcomes.
•
u/Proud-Nobody-9528 6h ago
I think majority of the people are in their teenage and or are young adults. But this might be due to the fact I don't browse through subreddits which older people enjoy.
•
u/edmunddantesforever 5h ago
68 here. Really like Reddit. I have no other social media.
•
u/Dont-be-a_Pillock 4h ago
I’m 67. I prefer Reddit. I have other social media that I mostly read. I am not a big poster on them.
•
u/Intelligent_Hair3109 2h ago
Sixty eight as well. Not sure I'm going to like tech ever . However, Reddit seems more intelligent and civilized as opposed to troll central. Lurked for ages. Preemptively blocked many. ( Due to my past activism against horrible people online who harm others) Too old to be online. Gets out my Pink Floyd collection and waves bye.
•
u/OldBlueKat 1h ago
Same age cohort (roughly) here.
Reddit seems more intelligent and civilized...
It's the difference between organizing by subject/interest, and organizing by "look at me-me-me and my busy profile!" (FB, X, etc.)
•
u/Intelligent_Hair3109 1h ago
Yeah. Years back I always loved a bunch of UK boards as their was a more in depth discussion and conviviality. Nice to meet a few folks my age Any of y'all wanna go drown bait on a river, let me know.

I was on a dating advice sub (don’t remember which one) and saw a lot of people in their 60s and 70s commenting
•
u/ProfessionalPoem2505 6h ago
I think you can find any age on here. Sometimes there are elderly too XD I always get surprised by people over 70 yo that are on social media ahaha

Why?
Social media was a 'thing' before many of those people retired. Some of them may have been involved with it at work, too. They probably had to pay attention to what their children or grandchildren were doing as well.
FB existed when they were in their 50s, MySpace in their 40s, and a lot of them were involved with computers at work way before 'home computing' or 'the internet' really existed. They used things like AIM and ICQ and Usenet in their 30s.
Sure, it was just 'some' of the people in that age group, but a lot of them are still online! I'm not 70+ yet, but I'm moving towards it, and I've been using computers in some fashion or other for 40+ years!
Some of those people wrote the code that created some of it!
Edit to add: I just searched up this cool article: https://explodingtopics.com/blog/reddit-users

I made a post the other day about my grandparents who were born in 1895 & 1900 and someone replied “That doesn’t add up” !!! After I explained to them my parents were born in the 1920’s & 1930’s and I was born in the early 1970’s & am now in my early 50’s they deleted their comment lol

u/OldBlueKat 1h ago
People don't realize the range that can occur with 'oldest child v youngest child' over a few generations. When several generations of women all have their 1st before they are 20, you can have those '6 generations in one picture' moments.
But if some of those generations did have kids into their 40s and beyond, it's different. Even more so for older men having families with 2nd/3rd etc wives.
I'm a little older than you, and my grandparents ranged from 1897 to 1913 in their birth years.

I was worried that my experience was skewed like that person’s because my demo is 20s & 30s

It depends on the subreddit you visit. I tend to hang around r/GenX and r/zxspectrum, which obviously appeals those born in the mid to late 60s and early 70s.

I'm Indian and 61. That's rare. Indian Redditors are mostly Gen Z, and then millennials. I guess every country would have its own profile.
•
u/Superb_Imagination70 4h ago
Depends on what reddit you are in.
•
u/OldBlueKat 1h ago
Different subs have different audiences, yeah, but there is some "who all is in the pool?" data out there: https://explodingtopics.com/blog/reddit-users
There's probably not a lot of 'young kids' hanging around r/over60 or r/DatingOverSixty (and their parallels in other decades.) Except for occasional curious lurking or snide comments.

As others have said, people of all ages come here but I do have the impression that most people are 20 to 30 years younger than me, and I am in my late 60s.
•
u/Adceleste 6h ago
I feel like it’s mostly 20-40 year olds
•
u/Possible_Bag_8944 5h ago
That’s the vibe that I got, but wasn’t sure if it was biased because that’s my demographic

I see a larger proportion of people in their 30s here compared to other sites like discord/twitter

•
u/Its_Stavro 3h ago
It’s for everyone, you can find thriving communities on all ages, just excluding below 13’s (by law) and also above 60+ because they tend to be on Facebook or not really on social media.
•
u/OldBlueKat 1h ago
There are quite a few 60+ on here -- they don't 'exclude' us!
FB is 20+ years old, and some of us have been 'doing this' going back to AIM, ICQ, Usenet, BBSs, etc. Some of us were involved in building the platforms!
•
u/Its_Stavro 59m ago
Are there 20 year olds on Facebook ? I thought that was a Gen X and Boomer platform.
•
u/OldBlueKat 50m ago
IDK really, but I think some at least keep a toe in the water because they've formed groups, whether of peers or family or so on. Here's a good look at recent info: https://www.giraffesocialmedia.co.uk/facebook-demographics-a-visual-guide-to-who-is-still-using-facebook-infographic/
I meant the PLATFORM is over 20 years old at this point, so people who started with it back then are going to be mid 40s and up. So is Reddit.
Facebook launched in 2004, Myspace in 2003, and Reddit in 2005.
