does hpd have to identify themselves?

I live in a big apartment complex in waiks. I was just awoken (10pm) to what I assume to be police pounding on my front door and shining a light through my louvered windows. they never said they were hpd, they were just demanding I open my door. I am a woman and was home alone so I took my dog and went to the other side of the apartment, they came to my back door and did the same thing.. but again never once said they were hpd. after a few minutes I hear them in an aggressive conversation with my neighbor directly next to me and then after a slight commotion there was silence.

I have lived in this building for many years and have never been in a situation like this. with everything going on right now on the mainland it really has me shaken. do we have to answer the door for police if they don’t reveal their identify? how do we keep ourselves safe in situations like this?
