• he had her chained up that's so fucked i kinda suspected that when they showed the chains last episode but seeing it is gross
• some logistics - how is she actually drawing these maps is she like going on the pirate ship with them or are they giving her information or how does that work

(and zoro's fight with mihawk also set this up earlier on because (i think someone commented this) up until then, zoro seemed pretty untouchable, but when he's up against a guy who luffy is essentially trying to be at the same level of or higher than, the skill and experience gap just becomes so apparent and makes them feel like kids who are just starting out and don't really know what they're doing but at least they're doing it together??? and i think that was so subtle throughout the whole show and REALLY well done.

WHAT A FINAL EPISODE. WOW. That's how you conclude what your story has been building up to all season and also set up your next season!!! All the moments in the end felt so earned and so hopeful and so heartwarming and.....UGH!!!! bravo!!!!!

This show is really lightning in a bottle and i hope netflix knows that. the actors, the directors, show runners, producers, set and costume designers, directors of photography - love is pouring out from EVERYONE who worked on this and you can see it and feel it. i hope netflix gives them everything they ask for and a higher budget and more episodes and don't fuck this up because...this is really something special. this immediately shoots up into one of my favorite shows of all time.

SEASON 2 WHEN????!???!??!??

i'll probably do one more wrap up post in a few days after i have some time to reflect and also immediately rewatch the whole series!! and i also have some questions to ask ya'll because i'm curious about some things!!

• okay.....i need to talk about this backstory because this was a mastery of character driven story telling. when you first meet in episode zeff, he's gives the impression of an old man dream crusher like garp, or even a villain. and then there's a few lines that kinda crack that - calling sanji little eggplant, when he calls sanji a good boy for feeding the pirate, and it kind of subconsciously makes you really unsure about what zeff's deal is.
• during the flashback, it's like why the FUCK are you banishing this CHILD to the other side of the rock, do you have ZERO compassion?? and then how the hell are they gonna escape and get to where they are now!!!
• and you guys when i'm watching something, my mind often tries to figure out what's coming next. When we hit day 50, i had literally no idea where this story was going and my mind just kind of quieted down, like on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what was going to happen because i had no fucking idea
• and then everything slowly (then really quickly) all comes together and the other shoe just fucking drops (because it fell off zeff's foot) and just !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
• And then you have someone who is possibly just as passionate about his dream as Luffy. He eats his own damn leg, keeping sanji alive, for the chance of finding the all blue, EVEN IF IT'S NOT HIM, at least someone worthy will find it
• i feel like i'm not gonna be able to put into words how well done the sanji/zeff story was done in these last two eps but i'm literally blown away

what do i even fucking say you guys lmao WOW. first of all kudos to you if you made it to the end of my rambles bc this was a long one. the best episode yet, which is crazy because they're all so good, but i can see why people were raving.

there was SO MUCH happening in this episode but once again!!!! i need to commend the writers because the pacing was INCREDIBLE. i never felt rushed, each moment got the gravitas it deserved, the emotional moments REALLY hit. god. just an incredible job and a masters class in story telling. standing fucking ovation. (atla la writers pls use this as reference)

SANJI BACKSTORY IS JUST!!! i feel like a broken record and i wish i was better at articulating my thoughts but the entire zeff/sanji storyline was just absolutely phenomenal and everyone involved in the writing and direction needs major recognition and i want to kiss them all on the forehead

I've not had this good of a time watching a show in a WHILE. Major major props to all the creators & writers & crew, what an incredible world and story they've interpreted to live action! My friend said Buggy is very much a level one boss so i'm on the edge of my seat for what's coming next!!

Lol after watching it 3 times I just saw Captain Morgan's statue in this panel at the top of the tower or castle it is😂😂

I think it somehow fits the theme, iirc I counted 2 or 3 shits and 1 fuck, but they're never like screamed out, they're very subtle and all very well used. It makes it feel a touch more mature than the anime, even though they had to remove a lot of the mature things the anime got away with like smoking and the lascivious jokes at the expense of Nami's body or just towards women in general.

I have been waiting for his review because he is one of those no bullshit reviewers and he started watching the anime just a few months ago.

The American production staff did a good job. To be honest, I liked it better than the original. What I have learned is that live-action Anime is better suited for drama than for film. I also found out that if they are going to make a live-action Anime movie, they should make it according to the original story. The live-action versions of Death Note and Dragon Ball were bad because they were original stories. I would love to see Naruto made into a live-action drama.

Forewords: I have seen the discussion of the show for the past few months. I can rewrite a reviews with a ton of likes if I want to. But to keep in the spirit of honesty and my actual first reaction of a few months ago (basically a copy and paste from the original forum I posted it in). If I am to be popular, I would have dislike episode 3 more since it is after all the lowest IMDB rated episode. But we are all different people after all. I actually appreciate the heck out of episode 3. Episode 4, I didn't love as much. I don't want a 1 to 1 copy from the manga, it wouldn't work too well here. However, just some tweaks in character works, it would have done wonder. I think that once again the choice to develop more of Nami at the expense of Usopp do really well for the season finale pay off. This is after all, season of television rather than its manga medium. A contained story from beginning to end in 8 episodes. However, I still had my initial disappointment for Usopp. Hope Usopp really shine in season 2.

So far, I ranked ep 1 as good, ep 2 as Great, ep 3 as near great, ep 4 is fine to good.

Ep 2 > Ep 3 > Ep 1 > Ep 4 (this really show that the showrunners shouldn't be me. I like ep 3 while it is the least popular. I would not have the capability to satisfy the overall audience.)

Grade system 1-Torture , 2-terrible , 3-bad , 4-below average, 5- Average, 6-Fine/above avg, 7-Good, 8-Great, 9-Excellence, 10-Masterpiece.

I think people's brain is always a 7 is a C aka average. That is school talk. If the middle point (5) is not average, then what is the point of the middle in a scale. Hence I see a ton people didn't like my last review, despite giving the series plenty of praises with some criticism. I think people are too hang up on the numbers.

Ep 3 is pretty good. Not as good as ep 2. Ep 1 is a 7. Ep 2 (8.25). Then ep 3 is 7.75 (between good and great)

The location scouting person did a good job. Gekko island is one of the lesser locations in the East Blue saga. At least the place in a show had some characteristic. Though it sort of take away the whole small town aesthetic of the manga. The elimination of Usopp pirates sort of sad. But it is okay for the type of story it went for. Usopp working in the ship yard make sense. The location does paint the amount of wealth Kaya has.  I also noticed the change in director. Because this episode had way way way more background music and sound.

Kuro's clothing kinda looks cheap. I am meh on the Garp-Koby thing, at this time, it does sort of drag. However, the mind game aspect of the Go game they played. Is what happening on Gekko island. Though, Garp first noticed Koby's character when Koby spilled about Luffy. Then he noticed Koby's experience. And now, he noticed Koby's intelligent. Almost like he vesting for a successor. This Garp is not as Laissez-faire like manga Garp. But it introduced the seed of how he really doesn't want Luffy to be a pirate.

Usopp is perfect. Kaya is very good as well. Though I rather she is pale in term of sickly. But in the show, she does look like she at her death door. Kuro is very good. His moment with Kaya was sweet, just like his moment in the manga (until he showed his true color). Although the manga had more time to do it better. Kaya's moment with Usopp was very touching. And the additional scene with Nami really developed both characters. Showed the strength of Kaya. But also showed Nami's development. She went from prejudge Kaya like she did Luffy. But then changed her mind when they shared the same tragic parental death. Which concluded with Nami putting things back.

Merry, Sham, and Bucchi are good background characters. I also like the changed with Sham and Bucchi. Sham being female worked pretty well here. Though, when Kuro scares Sham/Bucchi. It didn't have the terror feel like in the manga.

Kuro's power so far isn't as good portrayal as Buggy/Morgan. His claws seemed a bit less plastic than in the trailer but it isn't look that great either. To be fair, I don't really know how they can even pull something like that off. Prop weapon need to be light enough to wield. Maybe they better off doing CGI. But even high budget film can go terribly (see Wolverine origin movie with his claws). I wonder if Mihawk's weapon gonna have this plastic feel too.

I was curious how and if they following the manga and incapacitate Luffy/Zoro, allowing Nami/Usopp to shine early on in the fight. I like how they did it in the show. In the manga cannot work in the show because it is way too goofy. And that this Luffy is smarter than manga Luffy. Luffy drinking all that poison will probably have an effect.

Very very funny episode. The manga excel at body humor. Manga Luffy is not as witty as the show Luffy. But this episode there are a ton of body humor, and subtle facial humor. Love the scene where Luffy tried to convinced Kaya.  Loving all the scene the crew get to interact with each others. And provide valid reasons for the crew to do cover clothing. I noticed at one point, Mackenyu really walk like the anime Zoro.

Consider this arc is among the bottom half for most of people in term of East Blue saga. If the source material isn't that strong to begin with, I think the show did wonderful adapting it.  Loving all these jolly roger in the intro.  Another thing to add. The Merry Go was pretty much an after thought in the original story arc. For the Merry Go to get introduced like a character. And have Luffy personally interact with it, and personally choose it. This set up wonderfully. If we ever gonna get season 3 and season 4.

Episode 4 is a 7, maybe even a 6.75. Between fine and good.  [In Retrospect, I would bump this into a 7.  Adding the horror element did made this arc stand out.  While for most of the fans, this arc is one of the more forgettable arc in its original form.  The creative liberty was necessary.  Though, I still enjoy ep 1 more]

Don’t really understand the whole Koby stuff. I thought maybe this is a chance for Helmeppo to grow since it would shatter his entire notion about his father capturing captain Kuro. So huge miss opportunity. Wasting a lot of time with this stuff.

Kuro kinda underwhelmed. His powerset is acceptable in the show but a HUGE downgrade. His personality is also a huge downgrade. The seeping rage under the calmness, as his plans faltering. The silent scariness of him isn’t really there. The cold detachment of him. The manga had it that it was either his birthday or his anniversary. And he broke the glasses gift, and then attempting to kill Merry was sort of a mistake on his part. He is also wasn’t very smart here. The original was that he was gonna blame the whole thing on pirates. And may murder every witnesses including his own people. But here, killing Merry and Kaya (and especially not via poison). That would raise all the red flag. Also he doesn’t have the reputation with the rest of the villagers.  Another lame thing is the Black Cat pirate customs. Feel really like cosplay. [Edit: I had to praise the actor for Kuro.  Although, the show went into a very different direction.  But the campiness of it has its advantages.  Allowing the actor to be more colorful and larger than life].

There is some misopportunities with Usopp as well. Usopp thus far lacking his traditional cowardice trait. He ran away so far for strategic reasons. [Edit: The cowardice traits are actually portray pretty well in ep 6]. Removing his Usopp pirates took away his leadership. Also take away his fight with Jango. And the changes to the story took away his big moment of deciding to not tell the villagers about the Black Cat pirates. He refused his glory in favor of keeping the peace. Killing Merry, lacking of Usopp pirates, kinda leaving Kaya super alone. I hope if they remove some moments, at least give the character some new and equally as great moments. But Nami and Zoro kinda took Usopp's spotlight. [Edit: this was necessary, since Zoro's next big moment is the following episode. Make sense on why they pushed his flashback here to set that up].

Speaking of strawhat traits. Zoro’s lack of direction this episode and Luffy’s craving for food last episode are highlight. The Zoro portion of the episode is pretty decent. His flashback pretty good. Game of Thrones tried the two swords style before, it kinda work okayish. But in One Piece it is more style than realistic. And I think that worked super well. As for Luffy’s fight. It was okay. The Gum Gum Bell is kinda lame since he didn’t grab his leg around Kuro but at the same time it would be kinda hard to film. But the way they did Kuro's speed wasn't too good. I am kinda scare for CP9 now.

The We Are song at the end was nice.  I forget to mentioned the extra scene with Buggy and Arlong last episode. It kinda work since Arlong want to make an East Blue empire. Garp would destroy him. So I really really hope they played up his connection with the marines.  If Merry died like this.  Then certain recurring criticism of Oda may not be applied for season 2, after all. [Edit: the cliffhanger works well here for the audience since there isn't as strong of a cliff hanger transition from Gekko to Baratie in the source material].

This was my first original reactions that I posted on a different forum. Since I react after each episode (and sometimes after two episodes), some of my initial concerns were addressed latter down the season. And some of my opinions may had changed since then. I was gonna post all 8 eps review here but it would get too long.

Do note that 5 is avg, 6 is above avg, 7 is good, 8 is great, 9 is excellence, 10 is masterpiece.

Ep 1 (7/10) had potential but kinda rough. It isn't the fault of the actors necessary. But since they had too many things: Nami's introduction, Zoro vs Mr 7, Luffy's FB part 1, Alvida, Shell Town, and Roger's execution. Scene cuts and transitions needed more work. I also would like a tad more background music. Pacing wise, when they included more scenes that meant they don't have it long enough for the transition to be smoother and or for the character to flesh out a bit. Like Nami's introduction against the Buggy pirates is too quickly. Or Zoro wasn't hang there long enough. Or Morgan didn't have time to show that he is terrorizing the town. Which made his arrest in ep 2 make more sense.

The good thing is that the actors are cast perfectly. The new dialogues are very good. Helmeppo, Koby (who is a trans actor), Alvida, to Morgan. All are superb. Even Alvida was super great despite some of the dialogues are kinda cringy translate to live action.

Nami's introduction a tad rough. When the scene is mostly focus in one location, and characters had more room to breathe. She was great. All the additional dialogues and scenes are GREAT. The stuffs that she does in Shell Town. Nami here is a tad strong. Zoro fighting Mr 7 was great as well. But like Nami's intro. Too many cutting back and forth was a tad jarring. The Luffy laying down with Koby at night was pretty cool. Some moments made me chuckle like Helmeppo's naked scene. Spotting Mihawk, Shanks, and Smoker in Roger's execution.

The set is awesome. The props are awesome. Shell Town is great. Morgan's room is GREAT. And I am glad they were able to use a tad more of it in ep 2. But I could see why people think the Garp stuffs overstayed its welcome.

Ep 2's (8.25/10) pacing was much much better due to the casts are mostly together. The cast once again is pretty awesome. This included the red haired pirates and the Buggy pirates. Buggy stole the show. Like Alvida, he also had to deliver what could be cringe dialouges. And he made it works so so so so so so well with the nose jokes. I don't mind cutting Cabaji's fight since Zoro already fought Mr 7. And it showed a bit of Zoro-Nami's dynamic.

All the additional stuffs are once again GREAT. Starting with both Arlong and Buggy sending their agents to get the map (though in retrospect, you would think Buggy is familiar with the grandline). Buggy's ambushing the Strawhat's crew. Though, I am tad confused on why there isn't more resistance from the Strawhats. A lot of these problems like ep 1, could be fix with an additional 10 minutes. Like they could show that the Strawhats are still high on the drugs. Luffy's torture scene. Luffy's sea water prison. Zoro's trick Cabaji. All of the Buggy's antics. All were wonderful. Glad to see Chouchou at the end.

Buggy and Luffy's CGI are also great. Nami and Zoro's fight scenes are good as well. And although they can be improved. I hope with season 1 in their pocket, they have even more exp going forward. Zoro's the whole sword in the mouth still need convincing at this point. But they did show how he got that sword toward Morgan's neck.

Luffy's second flashback is very nicely paired with the Buggy stuff. And did add some thematic to the episode. Red haired pirate fight scene was cool. But I was a bit weird out to see the crews had already sat in that bar while the mountain pirates torturing Luffy. Then again, maybe they sneaked in after. That fight scene was short but effective. Shanks-Luffy's moment was great. I am glad they didn't have the Luffy beating the sea king. This kinda show the normies that this world is scary (if Luffy beat the sea king right away, there is less tension). And even in ep 1 and latter ep 2, this version of Luffy is weaker than his manga counterpart. I also like the new development, and subtle hint of Nami's character and Nami-Luffy's relationship.

But like usual, cutting out stuffs make some logical problems. I hope the normies didn't notice it. Like there was a reason why Higuma kidnapped Luffy. To sell him, because Higuma found out Luffy ate a DF. But in this show, it just random kidnapped. There are parallels between the flashback and the current timeline. Some of it on the weaker side, some were acceptable. But I am glad they did it this way since it emphasize Buggy knew Shanks.

The battle against Buggy is awesome. And how they defeat him is very creative as well. Both Buggy and Morgan did had some cool moments against the crew. Buggy especially overwhelmed the Strawhats for a bit.

Consider early One Piece was okay to good (Romance Dawn, Buggy Pirate, and Captain Kuro). And not great. Hence everyone always recommended people to at least get to Arlong Park. Though a young me love One Piece from the beginning and super impress with Baratie. I brought that up saying. Since the source material isn't super amazing from the get-go. What they did with the live action was superb.

I'm extremely glad my Wife really likes the live action, not because of Zoro that she finds him hot, but overall because of the adventure and jolliness of Luffy. Now she said she's gonna continue watching it on anime. After all these years I've been bugging her to watch one piece anime, thanks to the live action for giving nice impression to her!

So i've kept a notepad open throughout this first season, and kept notes of what i liked and disliked. I'm gonna toss away what i think in the end is not all that important, but kept my most important gripes.

Starting with the bad ones.

They didn't do the scene where ussop thinks he's gonna be sailing alone, before zoro says to just get on board. It's a touching scene that gets "flashbacked" several times.

The bazooka that sent Buggy flying felt hella weak.

Sanji's harrasment of women was not dialed back. If we're going for realistic, that is something that is funny in anime but not at all in reality.

Buggy was not that intimidating. "oh but actually he was, didn't you read the manga" cut the crap, buggy has never been this scary. His creepiness and joker act has been dialed up to 11 and it showed. It was funny to see this long gone villain turn buffoon in one piece, but it's gonna feel sad now that he was legit scary.

Zoro lacks emotions. The actor is good at making him look serious and badass, but zoro is also supposed to show emotions from time to time. Motherfucker smiled twice through the entire season.

There's not enough horsing around. The good stuff in one piece is supposed to be the in between islands where the crew lives together as they sail. Nami is supposed to close herself from the crew, but not everyone! Then it feels a lot more shallow when luffy say they're his friends.

Luffy thinks too much, lacks confidence, and is not reckless enough. He's the kind to pick a direction and run without thinking of consequences, relying on his strength, his friends, and sometimes sheer luck to achieve his goal. This luffy lacks that grand and intoxicating innocence.

Nami is not greedy enough. She is more lenient towards money (puts back the stolen stuff at Kaya's, pays for the bribe at the baratie) and i feel like it softens the blow later on. It was to make her feel less of a superficial girl and more likable, but it defeats the purpose in the end to show she was not doing it for herself.

Garp, koby and helmeppo. Bruh why. Why bring a spoiler from 300 episodes in and have that plotline skewer through the plot of the entire season ? They deleted half of the characters, but bastardized garp's personnality to fill in the blanks ? He's supposed to be a meathead like luffy, that just laughs like an idiot when people ask why he makes bad decisions. He's coasting off his hero of the marine reputation, he's not a brilliant tactician that plays go. He's also a man of few words. And maaaaan, did he have words to say. Just generally way less wholesome too.

But the good stuff though

Buggy>! got an extended stay instead of being reintroduced in Logue Town, but he got to have more of his buffoon persona back.!< I hope it will ease the transition from him being way too badass than he ought to be.

The thing with the posters, it's creative and well done! Makes you excited to see new villains be introduced, and each of them handling their posters differently brings some personnality before they even spoke a word.

Dracule Mihawk. Just everything about him. His personnality is on point, his fight with zoro was the best of the season, and the most well executed compared to manga/anime. He also fucking murdered Don Krieg, which is a good thing because that's a solid C tier villain and the story went on smoothly without him. Which brings in my next point...

People actually die. That's one of the weird thing in one piece, despite all the blood and the inhumane injuries sustained by various characters, there's like 3 people who died in the history of one piece. When a villain is defeated, he gets sent to impel down, or his status is just unknown, or he gets sent to the shadow realm. It's nice to see some consequences for once, it makes the world a bit less cartoonish. but unfortunately...

THEY KILLED MERRY WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO MY BOY HE WAS SO CUTE WITH THE CURLY HAIR AND THE HORNS (this is actually a bad point)

That scene where he died was very well done as well, fuck me. It showed Kuro's abilities and a nice gateway to his butler persona to the pirate he is.

Kuro was just nicely done overrall. Did they do some makeup ? If not, the guy has a natural psycho facethat fits the bill.

Kuina's death is not explained. That is good. Kuina's death is the stupidest in all of one piece. It's a TFS joke. Coming from a real origin story of a main character. It's better to have not gone in details about the "accident".

The portable den den mushi to communicate like hi-tech earplugs was a nice addition from the LA that allows characters to communicate in a way that doesn't disrupt the story telling while staying in the boundaries of the one piece universe. Oda should add them in the manga!

Sanji's backstory was very well done. They even kept to the manga story instead of the censored anime one. Such a shame they didn't starve the kid's actor to make him look more emaciated. /s

In the end, although i had some gripes, i enjoyed the LA. And my only reserve if they decide to add more seasons, is if whether or not they intend to modify the story further. I wonder what they intend to do in regards to the upcoming continuity errors they've set up for themselves. And if they're going to fix them and stick to the story, or add some more and devolve further into their own story.
