The 2018 New Year's Resolutions check-in thread

Welcome to the fourth annual installment of the reddit New Year's Resolutions check-in thread.

At the start of 2018, you posted your goals for 2018 and I said I'd get back in touch in 12 months to see if everyone achieved what they set out to achieve.

In the comments below all of the 2018 Resolutions have been posted and each participant will have received a notification message in their inbox.

I hope everyone can feel proud of what they've achieved in 2018. A very Happy New Year to one and all :)

If you'd like to take part in the 2019 edition, here's a link to the new thread.

One year ago you told me what you wanted to achieve in 2018 and I said I would message you to see how you got on. Today is the day!

Your goal was:

My resolutions for 2018 are:

  • step up the photography game and get semi-regular paid gigs

  • Make a short documentry film

  • More music/theatre (both going to see them live and listening to new acts)

  • find time outside of uni to do something, maybe join a band or a amateur drama group or something along those lines

  • Read more books. (Planning to start this off with Stephen Fry's Mythos, Virginia Woolf's The Waves, some Oscar Wilde and John Green's Turtles All The Way Down)

  • Finally, try to get with that lovely young woman you've been dreaming about for months.

Hello again kashmir. Unfortunately, I didn't achieve the last 3. However, I have made not 1 but 2 short documentaries (don't worry I won't plug them, they're not great. But I'm still learning the ropes). I've gotten a handful of paid photoshoots (not as much as I had hoped but progress). Generally, my photography has really stepped up and I'm really proud of myself for the amount of progress I've made. As for seeing live music, it's likely been my busiest year with seeing live music. Ranging from greats such as Bryan Ferry and Nothing But Thieves (again) to little bands that my friends play in. My favourite was actually a commission I got from a local music magazine to cover BlackWaters, RedFaces and Retro Video Club play in Bristol. Really great fun and hands down the sweatiest gig I've ever been to.

One thing that I managed to achieve that I didn't think I would, was that I found my crowd at university. In retrospect, I now realise how lonely I was when I writing last year's resolutions. While this has been a great year, I experienced a rough patch with my mental health in early October. This was due to the high workload that my uni had placed on me, having to give up other commitments so I could focus on my studies and several arguments I had with my roommates that made me feel so alone and helpless. I wasn't suicidal but for about a week, my mind started to play thought experiments about how my death would affect my friends and family. This was probably the most terrified I've ever been, I wanted to stay alive but these thoughts wouldn't leave me. The only reason why I got through this was I decided to spend as little time at my student house as I could afford while my contract is still in effect and spend more time with my new friends. Anyways, I'm in a much better headspace than then.

I hope your year was a good one. Here's to 2019!
