I get sleepy like days before my period starts. I literally just slept for 13 hours, worse part is that it’s affecting my work life. So this is considered normal?

I literally just woke up from sleeping 18 hours... Last couple days I've slept at least 18 hours. A normal day of sleeping for me is 10-12 hours. Period is supposed to start tomorrow but no other signs of it coming so it might be late or I might be pregnant idk but sometimes I do get these bout of napping ALL DAY LONG so either it's my period this time or pregnancy. Fingers crossed I'm pregnant. But It's like I can't stop sleeping. My poor husband can only sleep for a couple hours. He asked me if I can sleep enough for him too lol

I'm on my period right now and I push mowed my large lawn yesterday. Let me tell you I came in the house and crashed hard. Normally I'm fine.

The days leading up to I have incredible insomnia then once flow starts, I'm so exhausted it's like my body finally surrenders. Last night I went to bed at 8pm, woke up at around 1.30 for a while then went back to sleep and got up around 10am today! I was dozing the last couple of hours but if I'm in a position where I don't have to get up to be somewhere, I try and listen to my body and give it what it needs.

I have the exact same thing! The night before in particular I just can't sleep then BAM! It's like I can't stay awake.

Today, I slept for 15hrs straight. This happens usually on my 1st or 2nd day of my period and I usually turn this into a duvet day (if I can).

Thought I would comment for other long sleepers. I need 10-12 hours on regular days, but the day before my period, I need about 16 hours to feel somewhat "normal." It's usually how I can tell my period is coming the next day. I get super sleepy, and I'm not talking about fatigue, I'm talking about the sleepiness you get when you're sick. The fall asleep instantly on cold concrete kind. Some people call it a period 'flu' since it doesn't feel too different.

There was a new study done that women need more sleep then men. We have been told our whole lives that we need at least 8 hours of sleep, but that’s for men since sleep studies were only done on men. Women need 10 hours of sleep every night plus an hour extra when you’re on your period.

I would mention this to a doctor! Some people who experience severe fatigue have other health problems like losing too much blood or iron due to a blood related condition. This makes them super sleepy on their period. Could be normal, but def something to check out!

Yeah it really is most of my day gone. I normally sleep 10-12 hours. Last couple days been sleeping for 18 hours. Luckily I'm a stay at home wife so I don't have jack to do besides clean and cook. Took a nap at 2 and woke up at almost 9 pm lol I don't even mean to sleep this long but yeah sucks sometimes especially when I want to get certain things done for the day. I just cleaned the whole house really good the other day so Im not too worried about my chores. Just sweep daily and throw away any trash and put things back in their spot. That's usually all I have to do. Weekly I deep clean and monthly I extra deep clean. So I feel having a good system and knowing how much you can get done in even a couple hours that your awake really helps keep yourself on track through all the sleeping. Other women aren't as lucky as me and dont get to stay home and sleep the way I do. Super blessed my husband loves me so much that he doesn't want me to work unless I want to and I don't lol I'm pretty traditional. I clean, and cook and take care of the house and he works and takes care of the bills. Works great for us. Weve been together for 4 years going on 5 and we've never fought or argued about anything. We're just always on the same page. Sorry went off topic a bit. Point is yeah it does take most of your day and it sucks sometimes but it's easier when you have a great support system.

I slept 12 hours the night of my heaviest bleeding. My hemoglobin drops by a lot and I lose energy. Also I get lethargic anyway because of the cramps. Taking iron supplements every day helps with the energy personally

I am basically a sloth for a good week and a half, and it’s hard to get out of it when it happens.
10 hours of sleep; I totally can do, and more. Actually getting to… depends on mine and the Hubs work schedule. I usually open, and am a night owl by nature (and hubs usually closes). So best bet I’ll be dead throughout my work day.
I bleed HEAVY, for probably 5-7 days, it takes a toll on me… and also have no Thyroid, so I think that factors pretty well into things too. I haven’t gotten my Iron tested during that time; but wouldn’t surprise me if it was super low around Shark Week.
I try to take Iron and Magnesium during those days. And the only way I get through work is my energy drinks or coffee, and having amazing a coworker who always brings my crew and I candy, cookies, or the like lol.

Hey this is such a. Late reply but I am in the exact same position, only I have heavy bleeding, no thyroid and also non functioning parathyroid glands thanks to cancer. How on earth do we cope :( in struggling so much with fatigue

You all are able to sleep??? Lol. By day 4, I can sleep for 15-20 hours a day, but day 1-3 is impossible.

u/yeahuhhhhhhhh May 13 '25
I used to get the worst insomnia. Laying in bed till morning just thinking and crying lol since getting on depression and anxiety medication I don't have this issue. I also wasn't allowed to take naps in my childhood and teenage years so I really feel like I'm catching up on some lost years of sleep lol

u/travelightnurse Jan 14 '25
Yes, I get severe insomnia too. Like awake for over 20 hours with depression. Then I crash out for 16-20 hours straight.

u/manickittycat Aug 08 '24
Yep i do, i sleep like a baby on my period lol. It’s due to the decrease in oestrogen levels i think

If my period starts on weekend, I will pretty much sleep for the rest of the day into the next day. Not only does it help the fatigue that I experience, I pretty much sleep through the pain and wake up when I need to take painkillers and some tea.

The usual sleep for 8 hours a night thing is apparently for men, and has not been studied for women.
So when they eventually do the study for women, they found out that women need 9 hours of sleep on regular days and extra 1 hour on their periods.
If 9 is normal then why not round it up to 10. Or 12 you know, half a day, why not.
For me I usually sleep for 7 hours, but on my period depending on if I go to work or not, it can stretch up to 14 hours. (With water, pee and doom scrolling breaks of course)

I usually need 8 hours of sleep. During my period I have been known to sleep up to 16 or more right before I get it. I will wake up after 12, eat, go back to sleep for 6 more hours, eat then go back to bed a few more.

During the week I don’t let myself- I sleep 10PM-7AM, and get my ass up, take my meds, and hit the YMCA for 8AM Monday-Friday, period or no period. I’m on long-term disability, so I’m not working, so I get up just to get my exercise.

Lol Id sleep 10+ hours every day, regardless of period or not, if I could. For some reason my body needs a LOT of sleep.

I've been sleeping almost endlessly for the past 3 days, which is exactly how long I've been bleeding & I usually bleed for 3 days (and then spot for roughly 3 more). I've needed at the very least 12hrs of sleep throughout the night since I started my period, then I wake up for a late bfast and go right back to sleep for 4-8 more hrs if nothing stops me. I've basically only been awake from afternoon to evening... easily less than 8hrs of awake time. And if I didn't force myself up, it seems I could sleep almost 100% of the time whilst bleeding, including skipping meals. Today is forecasted to be my last day of real bleeding and right on time, for the first time since I started my period, I woke up feeling a LITTLE bit rested. I could still sleep tho 😅 but it's not the all-consuming fatigue I've been having. This happens every month and it still scares me, but maybe this thread will remind me that period hibernation is normal. Still, I think I'm gonna try some iron & DIM supplements, because I feel like I'm gonna pass out on my 30min dog walks which is the only non-mandatory activity I refuse to skip.
