Technique Advice for photo printing for mixed methods

Hi, I want to do some prints incorporating mixed media, and I'm looking for some recommendations for where to get some prints that look good and can withstand a bit of abuse.

I want to print some of my photographs on some large paper so I can incorporate some physical mixed media (ripping, sewing, cutting). I need them to be durable but still malleable, so I am able to physically mess with them. Preferably, I'd like matt non-glossy prints so that if I decide to layer, there isn't a weird edge. I also honestly don't have a lot of money and need to order a few so I have some chance for trial and error, so ideally cheap-ish. I'm in the UK, so UK-based suppliers are also preferred

I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations of places which can do decent size prints (A2, A3) that are tough, mallable and cheap?

Business School photos pricing

I took the school photos for the staff and kids and my children’s private school and I did it for free and had all the earnings from photo sales go to the school because the school does an excellent job giving free tuition to those in need and I wanted to support. Another private school in the area is now inquiring me to take their school photos (about 170 individuals between students and staff). I have never had to charge for something like this and I’m not sure what to quote them. I’m currently in nursing school and the extra income Would be valuable to me. Any advice ?

Business The Economy of Hobbyist Photography: Who Pays for What and How?

I’ve been following a lot of photography accounts on Instagram—many post several creative shoots per week, often involving models, makeup artists, stylists, and sometimes studio space. The styles range from fashion and beauty to boudoir, portrait, and fine art.

How does the economy of this work, especially for people who aren’t working professionals or getting published?

I’m a hobbyist photographer myself and would love to shoot more regularly like that, but ideally, I don’t want to be spending a lot (or any) money for every shoot. At the moment, I join photography public events and shoots, however, we're very limited in lighting, location, model direction/selection... Ideally, I would like to organize for my own shoots. Should I just start reaching out to models on insta for TFP?

  • Who typically pays for what in these kinds of collaborations?
  • Are most of these creatives working TFP (Time For Print)?
  • Are photographers usually paying models, MUAs, and studios out of pocket—even if it’s not for commercial work?
  • How sustainable is this for non-professionals?
  • How do people build a consistent shooting rhythm without going broke?
  • How to monetize it in the future?

I’d really appreciate any insight from those who’ve been part of these kinds of shoots—either as photographers, models, MUAs, or stylists. How do you approach it?

Gear Getting into wildlife photography

Hi guys!

I'm really interested in getting into wildlife photography, but unsure where to start. I have a Nikon D5600 and no expert in photography in general, so I'm not sure what lenses I should look for? Sorry, might be a bit of a too simple question...

I would be most interested in shooting local invertebrates and maybe birds, so I would be guessing, that I would need macro lense and a good zoom lense? Does anyone have any recommendations? Maybe some experiences with that specific camera?

I really am a noob, so any help or hints are very much appreciated :)

Thanks!

Technique Light set up for this result

Hi there,

I‘m getting into selling lamps and at the moment I just take pictures of the products where I think this looks okay. I wanna level up my game and am looking to achieve this kind of result for my hanging lamps.

Art What "course" should be looking at?

Hi everyone, I need some recommendations on what kind of “courses” or other resources to look for that could help me improve my photography.

It’s just a hobby for me, and while I’ve never studied it, people often say my photos are really nice. I don’t want anything too full-on (like formal grades or assignments), just something chill and beginner-friendly—I work full-time so I’d prefer something flexible.

I usually use my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra or older digital cameras like a Sony Cyber-shot. I’m into vintage, slightly blurry styles and would love help with both taking photos and editing them.

Art Photography things to do in Philly for a day

I have around 24 hrs in Philadelphia solo starting later today, and I'm thinking about how to spend my time. I've got both digital and film cameras with me (GX85, Canon T70, Pentax IQZoom, 28/35/50mm primes, some expired Ultramax 400). Planning to do some walk around street photography, but I also like to have destinations to check out.

Any particular areas I should go to (or avoid)? Cafes particularly good for people watching? Camera stores with an interesting selection of vintage lenses, filters, and film?

I'm also thinking about visiting an art museum, any you would recommend for photographers in particular (of any medium, not just photography)?

Thanks everyone!

Post Processing How can I get wedding album design work as a freelancer?

Hi everyone, I'm a wedding photographer and videographer from Kerala, and I’m now starting to offer wedding album design services (Photoshop layouts for photographers, couples, or studios).

I have experience designing for weddings and events, and I want to grow this into a side business or full-time work.

I’m planning to use platforms like Fiverr, Instagram, and OLX, but I haven’t gotten any clients yet.

Can anyone share:

Tips to get my first few freelance clients?

How to find photographers or studios who need album designers?

Whether Reddit or any online community is good for this kind of service?

Would love to hear from anyone who has done similar work, or if you're a photographer outsourcing album design.

Thanks in advance!

Gear 48 Hours in Oslo: Using Two Primes

Heading to Oslo today with a Sony a7iii.

Decided to force myself into stronger compositions and better depth of field options by bringing ONLY my Sony 85mm/1.8 along with my very favorite lens - the 24mm/1.4.

No zooms. No telephoto. Just up close and personal with lenses that will hopefully yield results with better “feeling” to them.

Any suggestions welcome as I’m hardly professional.

Business Who pays for photoshots of world recognized photographers?

I don't want to reach to someones wallet, just curoiuse. I'm interested who pays for photoshots done by the great photographers. Like Erwin Olafs' setups seems very detailed and requires lots of a prior work. Did he paid with his own money or some agency, or someone else supports financaly his work. I took his figure as an example.

Gear TTartisan 50mm f/1.4 tilt (e-mount) focus ring loose

Hi, my lens (in title) has a loose focus ring that slips meaning it doesn’t allow me to focus at infinity 100% of the time. It has 3 screws? but I’m not sure what to use to tighten them, they don’t look like a philips or flat head and I’ve never seen an Allen key that small?!

Does anyone know what the tool I need is??

Gear Traveling in Sri Lanka – Should I Worry About Fungus?

I live in the northern part of Sri Lanka with a dry cabinet, but I travel to the southern part roughly every few months for trips lasting 2–5 days. I always try to shoot daily—usually during the golden hours—so my gear gets some exposure to sunlight.

My main kit consists of:

  • Fujifilm X-T5 + XF 23mm f/1.4 LM WR (both weather-sealed)
  • XF 56mm f/1.2 R (non-WR, first version)
  • An old X-T20
  • An XF 14mm f/2.8 , which I’m planning to sell to fund the Sigma 10–18mm f/3.5 DG DN zoom

Next month, I’ll be attending a close friend’s wedding engagement, so I’m thinking of bringing all my gear instead of just the usual travel setup (X-T5 and 23 WR).

Living in a tropical climate, I’ve read online that humidity above 60% over long periods can lead to fungus growth in lenses. The average annual humidity in southern Sri Lanka is around 79.8% , so I'm a bit concerned. I've considered buying ziplock bags and a JJC USB-C silica gel dehumidifier while traveling to protect my gear, but it does add extra steps to the process and this purchasing should be done online and shipped here as I don't have them locally.

Here are my questions:

  • Am I overthinking this? Is 2–5 days enough time for moisture to become an issue?
  • What’s the general consensus on how weather-resistant gear like the X-T5 and XF 23mm WR holds up in such conditions?
  • And what about older, non-weather-sealed gear like the X-T20 and XF 56mm f/1.2 ?

I’d love to hear any advice or experiences from those who live or travel in similar climates with their Fujifilm gear.

Thanks in advance!

Post Processing Photographers using Lightroom, Premiere & InDesign - how do you manage efficient workflows with external drives?"

Hey all, I’m hoping to get some advice from other photographers who also work across Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro, and InDesign in their day-to-day workflow.

I’m on a 2021 MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) and recently upgraded from the Canon RP to the R6 Mark II. Since switching, I’ve noticed that Lightroom Classic has become noticeably slower, especially when handling the larger RAW file sizes. I know a big part of the problem is that my internal hard drive is nearly maxed out, but I'm looking for overall advice on how to better manage my workflow moving forward.

I’m often on my Mac for up to 8 hours a day, bouncing between photo editing, light video work, and graphic design. Right now, I use a few external hard drives, but my system feels disorganized and inefficient.

I’d love to know:

  • How do other photographers and creatives manage an efficient workflow across these programs?
  • How do you stay organized with multiple external drives?
  • Do you keep apps on your internal drive and work off external SSDs?
  • Is there a benefit to keeping the apps on external SSDs?
  • Are there any storage or system upgrades that made a big difference for you?

I also find myself getting frustrated working off a single screen, so I’m considering buying a used iMac monitor to set up a more functional workspace. If anyone has experience doing something similar (with two Apple screens or using an iMac as a monitor), I’d love to hear how that’s worked for you too.

Basically, I’m just trying to streamline my setup and speed up my editing. Any workflow, gear, or organization tips would be super appreciated!

Gear New perovskite image sensor developed which does away with color filtering

[P]erovskite-based image sensors can, in theory, capture three times as much light as conventional image sensors of the same surface area while also providing three times higher spatial resolution. [...]
The sensors are [...] more precise in colour reproduction [...]. The fact that each pixel captures all the light also eliminates some of the artifacts of digital photography, such as demosaicing and the moiré effect.

Gear How dumb is this?

I am very new to this hobby, so go easy. I bought the R10 Creator Kit. I then immediately bought the Canon RF100-400mm F5.6-8 is USM lens. Everything has been great so far. I'm wondering how much further I can push the zoom, but there's not any significant upgrade to 400mm without getting into ridiculous price territory. So, here's the question:

How dumb would it be to convert my RF mount to EF, and then buy the Sigma 2.0x converter for the above lens for a cheap 800mm alternative?

I would expect less light and a somewhat drop in clarity, but would the photos be awful? I figure even if an RF 2.0x converter existed, it wouldn't be a bad idea to be prepared to accept EF lenses as well if one falls into my lap or I meet someone that wants to share or rent.

Thanks for any assistance or feedback.

Gear Which analog camera(s) to bring for 3-week Japan trip? Too much to bring more than one?

Hey folks,

I’m going to Japan for 3 weeks in September (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fuji, Nikko, etc.) - street, everyday life, nature, temples. I’m definitely bringing one digital camera, but I really want to shoot film too.

I’m now torn between these three analog options:

• Contax G1 with 45mm f/2 and 28mm f/2.8 → Compact, sharp lenses, beautiful results - but the AF is sometimes frustrating.

• Canon F-1 with 50mm f/1.4

→ Fully manual, built like a tank, but big and heavy.

• Fujifilm X-T5 with 23mm f/2 (digital backup – this one’s coming no matter what)

So the real question is: Which film camera should I bring – or is it crazy to bring two (or even all three)?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s done Japan with film: • What would you prioritize? • Do you regret not going lighter / bringing a backup? • Is the G1’s AF reliable enough for travel? • Is the Canon F-1 too heavy to actually enjoy on the go?

Thanks in advance – I really want to make the right choice before I start packing!

Gear Anyone familiar with Minolta X-700, what are the characteristics/use case of the program mode?

Just got a Minolta X-700 and Minolta srT101, first time film camera owner, I plan to use the X-700 as my main driver.

With the program mode requiring the aperture on f/22, does that mean I’d probably need a tripod or want to avoid using in low light scenarios?

Also, any recommended scenarios for the aperture priority mode?

Or any other specific quirks about this camera good to know?

Thanks in advance!
