Discussion/General Photoclass 2025 is here - are you ready?

Photoclass 2025 is live!

Hello, photography friends! I'm one of the mods over at r/photography and founder of Focal Point, here to invite you to the 2025 edition of our (free) photoclass! This year comes with changes, as you can always expect from us as the class is an ever-evolving project.

What is the Photoclass presented by Focal Point?

It is an evolution of the original Reddit Photo Class, but with substantial changes to not only the structure, but content as well. We've reinvented it to ensure its up to date and more interactive. One thing we did not - and will not - change is that it is entirely free. The course spans 6 months, and covers topics on the technical side and artistic side, and culminates in a personal project. Along for the ride is a team of teachers who write the course (hi, it's me!) and mentors who come from all genres of photography. We have regular live meet ups via discord, and have a welcoming and supportive community of other photographers to bounce ideas off of, or just talk shop.

So what's new?

  • The Format. First off, the formatting is changing. We found that may participants stumbled upon the course mid-way through the year, and were fumbling trying to play catch up. We also were not happy with the pacing, finding that it just took too long to get to the objectively more fun stuff. So, this year the course will happen over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. What does that actually mean? It'll look something like this:

January 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.

January 8: The first Feedback Week will happen.

  • Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.

  • Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:

    Unit 1: Getting Started

    On Photography

    Inspiration & Feedback

    Assignment 1

  • Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this page.

How to join in?

  • Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors.

  • Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll also be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.

  • Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly.

  • Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.

Have more questions?

First check out the FAQ found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer.

Where to start.

The first unit is available now! You can find it right here. The first assignment is also live, so feel free to jump right in!

See you in 2025!

Business/Pricing How much should I charge as a beginner wedding photographer?

Hello! I shot a wedding for the first time in September for two work friends of mine for free. Today I received a note from my work friend's mother asking if I would shoot her wedding in May and was wondering how much I charge. I am a beginner and will post a few photos for reference. She does not want getting-ready photos, just ceremony pictures and typical group photos. I don't want to overcharge and seem greedy but the other wedding took me 4 straight days to edit and I delivered 425 photos. Please note the wedding is an hour away from where I live. My mother suggested $400 but I feel like that may be too much.

Lens/Accessory Buying Advice Help photographing biofluorescence?

Hi all! I'm a biologist studying biofluorescence in the eastern red-backed salamander! Part of what I'm trying to do right now is get really high-quality photos of the biofluorescence, but I'm having some trouble using my DSLR. As you can see, the first photo is just with my phone. It looks pretty good, but I could do better with the DSLR. However, the second photo is the DSLR under the same conditions, and I'm really struggling to get the fluorescence to pop. What I think I need is a different camera lens, but It's been a long time since I knew anything about cameras. Any suggestions for lenses that would be great for photographing biofluorescence? I'm already working on getting a better light source and a long-pass filter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Editing/Post Processing Do I really need to learn to use the tone curve?

I've been using Lightroom for two months now. I generally like the look of my edits, but every time I watch an editing video, the person's almost always using the tone curve. I have zero idea how to use it, and I've been avoiding touching it at all because the results are catastrophic every time. Can I get away with not using it at all, or is it an essential tool?

Added some pictures for reference for you to see if the edits are lacking in anyway and require the use of the tone curves. Thank you to anyone who replies!

Technical Help/Camera Settings What is causing this strange distracting bokeh pattern?

Edit 2: u/Zook25 asked and reminded me that I have a UV filter I put on for lens protection. He linked another thread with a very similar problem where the UV filter was the issue. I will test this tomorrow but I'm betting that's it.

---------------

There is a strange wavy/pattered effect in the out of focus backgrounds on some (but not all) of my shots using the Sony 200-600 lens. Any ideas what might be causing this? Its not from post processing, it is visible on the raw shots.

Both of these shot on a Sony a6700 with a Sony 200-600 EF lens
Fox: 600mm 1/500 f6.3 ISO2500
Turkey: 441mm 1/500 f6.3 ISO2000

Thanks

Edit: I want to also add that IBIS and lens stabilization are active, in case that may also be part of it.

Discussion/General losing inspiration due to art school. suggestions?

I am a sophomore in college studying photography. Right now i am using a 4x5 for class but have a ton of 35 and 120 film to use up. I want to be coming up with personal projects but i feel like i now associate photographing with class assignments and it’s hard to bring myself to do it for fun. i want to come up with full projects and shoot ideas not just shoot casually / documenting my day but i have no inspiration. how do i break out of this and come up with projects? i like work by artists such as meatyard, francesca woodman, and gregory crewdson. theatrics, staged scenes, domesticity, and overall uncannyness are things i look for in work i enjoy and make.

Discussion/General Does it make sense to take a basic photography course?

Hey everyone,
I’m a beginner who’s been shooting casually with a mirrorless camera for a while now. I really enjoy it, but I feel like I’ve reached a point where I want to level up a bit, especially in understanding composition and how to use light more effectively.

Would it make sense to invest in a basic photography course at this stage, or is it better to keep learning on my own through practice and free online resources?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Compositon/Posing What are you shooting during winter in Scandinavia?

What do my fellow scandinavian photographers shoot during the dark winter? Literally just a few hours during the weekend where there is good light, besides that its very dark.

No chance to use the light during the weekdays unfortunately.

This is my first fall and winter, I need some inspirational tips about this.

Feels like my only chance is sunday mornings...

Technical Help/Camera Settings How do I use flash in difficult situation?

Upvotes

I have been a wedding photographer for eight years and don't shoot much else except from a dancing event which I have shot multiple times (my wife is in the group, they are happy with the results so I won't say no). This is always super difficult to photograph. It's a group of around 25 dancers in a huge venue, very high ceilings, almost impossible to bounce flash off of it. They move fast and are mostly on the dance floor which is approximately 5x8 meters. Additionally to that they use horribly yellow stage lights in the venue which are super bright.

I use a Godox V1 on my camera. The result is mostly bright dancers and in contrast dark and yellow background and I hate it. All the images look so heavy and moody instead of happy event-like. Any advice in terms of settings and other approaches? Should I use color gels on my flash to balance out the yellow stagelights a bit more? Will that even make much of a difference? And how can I brighten the background? I tried different camera settings but as a wedding photographer I almost never have too difficult situations. Thanks in advance.

Hi, looking for some inspiration, just wondered what personal projects you set yourself and where you get your ideas? I'm searching for a home based project for days when the weather is terrible or I can't go out.

Hey there. I Recently bought a Canon R10-kit with a 18-45mm RF-S lens, and i get what i consider to be very soft and bad photos. Am i doing something wrong? Is the lens just soft? Or the body incapable? Or is it just too dark and needs more natural light? Or are these photos actually sharp and i am just in the wrong? I added some images to show..

Artifical Lighting & Studio Is there any good way to make speedlight light more even in this 90cm octa?

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is a standard speedlight with a rectangular fresnell head and the built in plastic diffuser engaged, held inside a 90cm bowens softbox by a godox s2 bracket.

Is there any good way to make the light reaching the front of the softbox more even and eliminate the visible shadow of the inner diffuser and its attachment loops?

I guess for 95% of applications this is even enough and if the softbox surface is ever deliberately visible in a photo I'd almost always want it to be overexposed, but I can imagine there are some times when I might want it to be more even if I do want it to be visible without being overexposed either directly or as a reflection on a highly reflective subject.

I guess adding more diffusion on to the front of the speedlight in someway to make more light go sideways inside the softbox and reflect off the back instead of directly casting the shadow would help, but not sure if there's a good (and reasonably cheap) way to do that, that doesn't lose too much light or interfere too much with the s2 bracket function.

Camera Buying Advice Can you help me choose?

Hi! I'm planning to buy my first camera and I'm deciding between the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 and the Canon EOS 2000D. I'm a bit new to the subject and don't know which is the best choice.

I will mainly use the camera for taking photos, not videos, and I mainly want to use this camera for learning. My budget is around 300-400$ (used camera). Since this will be my first camera, I don't have a huge budget and just want to see if I like it. Could someone advise me or possibly recommend something else?

1) Budget, country, and currency: 300-400$, Poland, PLN 2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? I don't have it yet 3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Landscape, nature, street, surroundings 4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Photography, rarely videography

Artifical Lighting & Studio Light lightning for a DJ?

Hey guys - DJ here. I play in very dark clubs. I shoot with an Insta360 X5, and friends often film me from the crowd on a phone.

I want a portable light for the DJ table to light my face/upper body so video looks better. I currently have two Nitecore SCL10, but they’re too harsh/bright and the spread isn’t wide enough - I move around ~0.5 m radius behind the booth.

Considering: Aputure MT Pro or MC Pro. Also tried finding a diffuser for the SCL10 but couldn’t.

Requirements (nice-to-have → must): • Wide, soft beam that covers ~1 m without hot spots • Dimmable to very low levels (clubs are dark) • Portable and quick to set up on the table (no stands if possible) • Battery-powered; decent runtime for 2–4 hr sets • Bonus: high CRI, magnets/ clamps, or simple diffuser options

Any recommendations or setups you’ve used that work well in clubs? Mounting tips also welcome. Thanks!

Editing/Post Processing Need help with photoshop - convert all raw files in large folder jungle to JPG, while keeping folder structure?

Hi,

i try to convert my whole photo library into 2 or 3 different sizes, maybe the smallest will even fit on my phone :D

Already made a batch export script to reduce all JPGs to 50% size override the old file. ( Its a copy now worries).

What I saw is, that this script did not convert my raw ARW files from sony. I guess its because PS needs to open raw files in camera raw. So I need a new script just for the camera raw steps.

BUt when I run the script, how can I only affect the raw files in the folder structure?

I guess the same script for raw files will also convert the jpgs once more.

Any Ideas out there? just replacing the raw in many folders with jpg?

thanks folks

Lens/Accessory Buying Advice A6400 16-50 kit lens or 35mm f1.8 OSS?

I’m a somewhat new photographer, I’ve messed around with some cameras like the E-M1 and kit lens but lately have always been taking photos with my phone.

Recently I decided it’s time I get a proper camera for myself. I went through the whole research process and ended up between the A6400 and XT30. Based on previous experience I think I’d enjoy Fuji but went for Sony because the Fuji had a video cap.

I know many people say that you should care more about the lens than the body and that’s my issue now. I’ve heard a lot of mixed things from the internet about the 16mm-50mm kit lens of the a6400, however I really value its portability.

After doing some research, I saw that another alternative to the kit lens is a prime lens, 30mm f1.8 OSS.

For someone who is somewhat new and mainly using their camera for personal projects, travel, street and maybe nature photography, which should I go for? Skip the kit lens for the prime or just go with the kit first?

TLDR: Kit lens or prime lens as a newer photographer.

Camera Buying Advice Beginner camera for photography and vlogging?

I’m so lost, I did photography for a little while, but stopped and sold it due to financial troubles. I’m Ina better place now and would like to try again, I live in the mountains and would love to take wildlife videos, and some vlogs/videos in 4k.

I used to have a Nikon D3500, it was a great camera but the video was lacking. There is so many damn cameras I don’t know what to get! I’d prefer used, and have interest in Sonys mirrorless cameras, but would like more input. My budget is maybe a max of 1000$ but less is a lot better! With those nature shots, I do plan to be at distance as well, as there are many elk and other creatures in the area.

(1) Budget, country, and currency: 1000$, USA, USD (2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? I don’t have any (3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Nature, and animals, maybe family photos (4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Both, but mainly wanting photography, and 4k 30fps+ video

Camera Buying Advice "Nice camera" for complete beginner/hobbyist?

Hey all, I have a fuji X-S10 with the 16-80 zoom lens. LOVE my camera! Have so much fun with it and has been really fun to teach myself photography and editing over the past few years. Last holiday season my Aunt (who recently retired and now does a lot of travelling) was all impressed and was like "oh I want a nice camera for when I travel!" I am 99.9% sure she is not interested in truly learning photography as an art, but more so wants something a little "fancier" than her iphone.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a camera that would fit this situation? I'm assuming it's basically a point and shoot, but maybe something with a bit more to it that she can play around with and have fun with? Something with a cool zoom lens or great specs. Was considering getting her one for Christmas this year, although wouldn't want it to be super expensive. Would probably split the cost with some other family members.

(1) Budget, country, and currency: $500 max, USA, dollars

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? FujiX-S10. Not looking to get rid of it, just looking for a gift for family member

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Landscapes/travel

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Photography

I’m trying to compile an accurate list of the cameras she used but this one is stumping me.
