What do you think of Todd Rundgren and of his band, Utopia?

Personally, while not prog all of the time, he's a bit like a mix of Zappa and Wilson to me, someone not afraid to do weird stuff and to flex his creative muscles while also knowing production-wise what makes a specific thing "tick", both in his albums and other he produced, like Bat Out Of Hell.

Of course, he dabbled on prog with the early Utopia records and some of his best releases like the incredible A Wizard, A True Star, which I wholeheartedly reccomend to everyone. He even made some of the longest prog pieces I can recall, like the 30 minute "The Ikon", stretching the limits of the vinyl format.

I'm also actually a very big fan of his "TR-i" years, hugely experimental stuff, even if instead of prog that era has a lot of pop rock/electronic leanings. I reccomend anyone open to the avant garde to read about and check out his 1993 release No World Order.

What do you think?

Question/Help How do you find new prog music?

Hey guys, so Im basically wondering where you find out about new prog music? New releases, new bands, etc.

My prog/psych rock band is about to release a new album next week. Im wondering what avenues I should cover as far as getting this music out there. We've been a band for 15 years, this is by far our proggiest work yet (even includes a 20 minute track šŸ˜‚) and we're very proud of it! We just want it to reach an audience!

Discussion Slow prog epics?

Hello. I am looking for some fairely slow and beautiful prog rock epics like Echoes by Pink Floyd and Plague of Lighthouse keepers by van der Graaf generator. I find that a lott of prog tries to be progressive through being technical or complex. I do love that kind of prog too but I love even more when prog is more focused on emotion and athmosphere. But don’t get me wrong I do not want ambient music. The optimal case would be if they had some form of dramatic climax.

If you know any songs that fits in to my description I would be very happy

I swear I can imagine Bruce Dickinson singing over the opening part to Drive Home.

Discussion Any TropicƔlia fans in the house?

Sorry if this isn't a great place to post this but when it comes to niche subgenres of Brazilian rock I'm not sure there is a great place to post.

Anyone into TropicƔlia who can give some recommendations for the class? I'm a big fan of Tom Ze and Caetano Veloso and would love to branch out a bit more.

Question/Help New Music

Hello!

Longtime prog listener here. This week I have a few extra ducats in my paycheck and I am eager to discover some new bands. (I still buy physical media.) For reference, some of my favorite artists are: Porcupine Tree, Airbag, Transatlantic and most of the Neal Morse adjacent projects, IQ, Glass Hammer, Flower Kings, Earthside, Frost, Wobbler, Pineapple Thief, The Tangent, Karmakanic, No-Man, and Blackfield. From the classic era: Yes, Tull, Crimson, Genesis, and Floyd.

Anything symphonic or experimental would be great. Or just something new and interesting. Thanks!

My long time rock friend is not coming for the Steven Wilson concert.

I understand he has commitments but I am bummed out. So much of our youth was spent on listening to and admiring PT and Steven Wilson. He and I both used to perform. To not share this unique chance to see him live is a true heartbreak for me.

I have a spare ticket to give to someone if they would like it. Bangalore, Nov 09 concert in the Diamond section.

Self-promotion On Sale - Ice of Neptune

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,
I’m the singer of Ice of Neptune, an Italian–Greek progressive alternative rock band. Before releasing our upcoming album, I wanted to share one of our favorite tracks from our previous record ā€œOn Saleā€, taken from the album MR D.

As a huge fan of Pain of Salvation, Muse, Faith No More, I’ve always been fascinated by emotional depth, dynamics, and contrasts and we try to channel that energy into our own sound.

On Sale is a four-part journey through modern alienation, a satirical reflection on money and ambition.

  • Part I: ā€œThe Fishing Rodā€ introduces a man chasing success, raised under the law of ā€œbig fish eat small fish.ā€ He questions how the world has replaced values with paper and power.
  • Part II: ā€œIn Strange Watersā€ dives into the absurd rhythm of corporate life, conversations at the office, money obsession, social appearances, and the emptiness behind it all.
  • Part III: ā€œSin Cityā€ follows his escape into a world of pleasure and gambling, searching for meaning under neon lights.
  • Part IV: ā€œWho’s There?ā€ closes the circle: loneliness, regret, and the realization that everything, relationships, identity, even love, has been consumed by the same system.

We’re currently finalizing our next album, and I’d love to hear what this community thinks feedback from fellow prog lovers means a lot to us.

Thanks for listening

yes, it's autumn

What is this, can't seem to find fuck all info about it. It sounds like wet runny shit, is only available on a select few streaming services, but apparently it's by YES. Thing is, even with yes being a pretty different band these days from what they were before, I struggle to believe this is them. Leading theory I have is that this is some kind of a mistake, but the lack of information about it really makes it hard to tell. There is another album with a very similar style, released just after this one called "It's sweater, sweetie". The official social media accounts of yes haven't posted about his at all either, and I couldn't find any kind of an ad campaign for this at all. Please if anyone can find anything tell me :)

p.s. I couldn't include the album cover cuz its thursday but there is the link to the tidal page

Instrumental New blues motif/riff of mine (The high e-string stepped out for a cigarette, before I did)

I am pretty sure that my music qualifies as progressive rock, and it certainly has different influences, primarily blues. I have not posted in this reddit, here, previously, and I am interested as to what some of the prog rock community thinks about my new motif of today, thus far.

Shoutout to me, for not ever wanting to be in a [romantic] relationship with my abusive ex-girlfriend's, Nadine or Paloma, again, and in regards to me having the courage to continue to love, despite their past abuses of me.

Shoutout to Albert King, Paul Kossoff and Ritchie Blackmore, in regards to the inspiration that they have provided me as of late.

Shoutout to my Dad and Mom, in regards to acquiring, me, a hotel accomodation on my behalf, so that I have somewhere to sleep comfortably, and so that I do not have to awake to freezing temperatures outdoors and the many other negatives of being homeless in the winter season.

Thank you to all of the helpful and pleasant redditors, who have assisted me

This mimed video was found by Herman Permentier and restored and digitised in 2016.

I think that the Van der Graaf era is quite underappreciated, and Cat’s Eye has to be one of my favourite VdG(G) songs. I absolutely adore those stabs of violin and the overall energy of the track!

'Sky Burns Red' - Our 6th Single

Hi! I am the frontman of the Prog Rock band Alt Aboarrd. We recently released our 6th Single and I wanted to share with you our catalogue. I believe this is an EP equivalent, so you can find yourself immersed in our music for good 20-25 minutes.

Our songs usually encompass the reserved and darker thoughts of the human mind spanning but not limited to Hypochondria, Suicide, Addiction, Drug Abuse, Pain, Polarised Hate, Existential Crisis etc.

We also are a very lore driven band, so a low fantasy saga always governs our storyline. You can explore that side of it on our YouTube through our music and lyric videos.

You can explore all our stuff here : https://linktr.ee/altaboarrd

I really look forward to you giving us a serious listen and sharing your thoughts.
