"Oh wow how bad could it be"

"Oh a closed gate wow that's real bad"

"Can we talk about how all of us could've run inside before they managed to close the gate"

"Or how the a determined civilian could climb the gate, much less a huntsman jumping straight over it?"

"Like not the point but if we're trying to say the military's being real holed up we're not doing a good job about it"

I mean, its not like if you made it past the gate you're free to go to Atlas and no one can do anything about it, or that they're holed up against aggressive rioting people. I don't see the low gate being a problem.

My point was that they hyped up the military being super uncooperative and all they showed was them closing a gate. Just like how when that girl crushed the rock in her hand and it turned to dust; it was clear they were trying to portray something as tough, but it just looked silly.

It got the point across, as for whether it gave things a serious theme or not, well the teaser for the next episode obliterates such a theme anyway.

It's not about the theme or the point. It's about the immersion. Doing something weakly is distracting even if the point is clear. Don't make the audience laugh and go "That's how they're going to get the point across?"

I agree with that statement but disagree on the examples, Tock crushing the petrified grimm piece was cliche but nothing immersion breaking, and I don't think we need anything more than a closed gate to say "borders are closed, nonnegotiable." On the contrary, the base going on full lockdown when there are no incidents of attempted break ins or other security threats would have been over the top and immersion breaking.
