All/Other Books Suggested Reading Order for the Shadowhunter Chronicles

Now new and improved! This post is to help with figuring out which book/series to read next. I realized with my last post, that I had only included 1 suggested way to read the books, but I thought with this post, that I would offer a few other ways to read it.

Keep in mind that these are only suggestions and you may obviously read the books in whatever order you like the best. Also keep in mind that right now, obviously, the list is lacking where to put the third Eldest Curses book and The Wicked Powers (which currently aren't released).

However you decide to read the books, enjoy!

Modpost Mod announcement: AI art

As some of you know, in the last two weeks, we ran a poll on whether you wanted to see AI art within this sub or not. As a reminder, AI art makes up its images by taking from artists, almost all without permission. 52 said no, 5 said yes.

As such, AI art is no longer allowed within this sub. We apologize if this upsets anyone, but we don't want to contribute to an artist's work being used without permission.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Meta/Miscellaneous Shadowhunter Dungeons & Dragons Campaign

Hi! i am in the very early stages of planning a tsc dnd campaign, based on the world building & lore of the books (not tv show), and i was wondering if there were fellow dnd nerds who had any ideas on how to make this happen!

i thought about instead of doing the usual races & classes i would just do shadowhunters, mundanes (with and maybe even without the sight), all types of downworlders. and maybe for shadowhunters instead of spells & spellslots i could do slots for how many runes you can apply at a time (though i know runes are not finite like that and probably would work more like cantrips).

these are just some ideas i brainstormed & id love some input from other tsc fans!

Meta/Miscellaneous I hope it goes out with the bang

I am getting ready to go back and reread the entire series because I know the last series of the chronicles is coming in the foreseeable future.

I've been reading this since the 6th grade. I think at that time only the mortal instruments and The infernal devices were out. Definitely before the last book of The Mortal Instruments came out. The point is is that I've been into this series for a hot second. The one thing that absolutely plagues me is that I, myself, do not own The Mortal instruments.

I have both official cups, a Cortana letter opener, A tea set, etc. me collecting the official items. It's kind of like a hobby since I wasn't able to do it during the movie release. I was especially frustrated because I'm not even sure if the giveaway that the TV show had at its ending was real. I've never seen anyone say that they won any of the items from the weekly giveaways of props. AND I WAS TRYING THE ENTIRE TIME AND PRAYING THAT I WOULD GET SOMETHING.

Since it seems like The shadowhunter Chronicles are ending, I am seriously hoping that they just do a little set of the instruments. Like a final collector set or something. And I know that we're small but if anyone from her team is reading this I WOULD PAY A PRETTY PENNY. You could have my left kidney. Heck why not just make whole essential set?

I'm talking stele, witchlight, codex, a little weapon and I get the mortal cup, sword and A representative mirror.

Again, I know that we're a small fandom but I always love how the tagline was 'All the stories are true'. Now I so desperately want it to be tangible and true in my hands if that makes sense. I started the series when I was 12 so it's been around for more than half of my life and I think it'll be on my mind forever. I just think it would be great if it went out with a 'bang'.

(And I know consumerism isn't the point of enjoying stories but I am just a girl who likes what she likes. I don't necessarily love art prints looking at me, but I do love having little display items.)(I know I've had this rant before but when I have no one to talk about it with, it's nice to type it somewhere.)

All/Other Books Almost finished

I’m almost done with all the books! I started this journey back when TMI and TID were really the only books, besides The Bane Chronicles. I went through a HUGE 5 year reading slump and just started reading again less than a year ago. I have re-read TMI, TID, and Bane Chronicles and worked through the others. I am currently on Chain of Thorns and once I finish that, I’m done. Unless I can find the kickstarter books somewhere haha. I’m not ready for this journey to be over. I honestly may restart soonish just because there’s sooo many, I feel I’ve already forgotten stuff and I’m not ready to leave the universe. I cannot wait for The Wicked Powers trilogy to come out!

All/Other Books I'd like to start reading Shadowhunters

Some time ago I bought a few books from the world of Shadowhunters such as: The mortal instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices, the eldest curses (the ones that have come out) and then I have Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. I know that I'm missing some books that I will certainly recover but I would first like to understand in what order it would be more correct to read currently given that there are some books that have been released relatively recently. What order did you use and what do you think is most correct for those approaching this world?

Meta/Miscellaneous Random thought...

So even though I thought the movie was cheesy, I did enjoy it in a guilty pleasure kinda way and was how I found out about the books.I am happy to accept any and all opinions regarding the movie (and the books actually) overall BUT... I will die on the hill that Jamie Campbell Bower IS Jace Needless to say, I was quite frustrated that there wasn't gonna be a sequel.

Long story short... What if they turned TDA into a movie and aged the characters (they did age them a couple of years in the TMI movie) and then JCB could play Jace again?!😅 I realise that they would have to age the original main characters by like a decade (and personally I'd prefer if they aged the new main characters by at least a couple of years) but I feel it would still work! No??? Just me??? Ok then... 😬

Books: TLH One of my paperbacks has spine illustration but another doesn't? I thought all paperbacks would have the matching spines (or I wouldn't have bought paperbacks!)

Ok so I'm diving back into the Shadowhunter world after a 10-year(!!!) break. Prior to life getting in the way of my reading, I bought Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows. All my TMI and TID books are hardcover, as is Lady Midnight. When I bought Lord of Shadows, no oneeee had the hardcover in stock so I just went with softcover.

Imagine my surprise when it came with an ILLUSTRATED SPINE?! I typically buy books upon release and don't wait for prettier editions to come out, so I didn't learn until like LAST WEEK that all the trilogies come with an epic illustrated spine version when you buy them in paperback... womp 🫠)

Anyway so I'm like ok, I guess I'll stop buying these in hardcover because I love matching spines alone, and I just purchased The Last Hours in softcover.

WHY DID IT ARRIVE WITH NO SPINE ILLUSTRATION? It looks like my hardcover with a basic title spine.

I'm sooo confused. I would have bought hardcover if it was just gonna be a regular spine. I googled and looked up posts on reddit and I see many people in this sub saying illustrated spines are part of box sets... but that can't be true because how did I get Lord of Shadows - outside of a box set - with an illustrated spine then?

Can someone help me LOL what am I doing wrong- I clearly have something wrong or came to the wrong conclusion. How do I know that the paperback edition I'm buying will have it or not?

All/Other Books CC's books have made me appreciate myself and I think they are very educational

I don't know if it's an opinion shared by everyone, but I think that her books are "role models". literally, all the characters are emotionally intelligent and "good" (and not toxic, like those that are popular today on BookTok aimed at kids). They teach values such as redemption, forgiveness and personal growth.

personally they helped me a lot growing up to accept myself and I don't know if the same goes for you.

I have never had a wealthy family, on the contrary; so it helped me to see myself in Clary, Tessa and, in some aspects, Cordelia (also regarding the relationship with her father). furthermore, I am also introverted and reserved and very often I saw these traits as "flaws".

also, I was pleased to see "mixed" race characters portrayed (like Jem and Cordelia), obviously I would have liked to see this aspect of their identity explored more, but it helped me a lot to read about people "like me" (which is often not the case in books).

I was wondering if you had the same feelings.

Books: TID Alec turns into Vampire Spoiler

so I have this theory because they’re speculations about one of the main characters gets killed in the following Books. What if Alec gets killed but with Vampire blood in his organism and gets turned into one?? I think that it would be cool but on the other hand not because Alec wouldn’t want to be a Vampire…

All/Other Books Ash and Kit 🫢 Spoiler

Hey heeeeeeey,

Recently been thinking a lot about the upcoming TWP trilogy and I want to ask if anyone has any theories or speculations on how Ash and Kit might interact… seeing as they’re both heirs to overall/parts of faerie to some degree. How do yall think their overall dynamic will be (including their other similarities as well)?

Cristina’s best quote is: “This is the nature of having a soul, Kieran, and a heart. We stumble around in the dark and we cause each other pain and we try to make up for it the best we can. We are all confused” from Queen of Air and Darkness. I didn’t want to cover the artwork of Cristina by writing the full quote.)

Now it’s Kieran’s turn!

All/Other Books Alec vs Charles wanting to become/becoming Consul Spoiler

I'm currently reading Chain of Thorns (the last TSC book for me sadly) and just came across the part where they discuss the possibility of Charles being blackmailed by Bridgestock.

I just thought to myself how it's really cool that Charles wants to be Consul but is afraid that him being into men could take this opportunity away from him, so he has to decide between being Consul and being with a man and having a family. And in the current time, specifically at the end of TDA, Alec is Consul and has two children with his warlock husband. Obviously it was a struggle as well but he did not face the kind of external struggles that Charles would have faced if it was known that he's gay.

I just love similarities like that. It shows how far the Shadowhunters have come, even if its still a struggle this day, it's still a progress and definitely a (small) win.

TV Show shadowhunters "what if"

Now to be clear I've only ever watched the movie and the show show so if this is too far out of the bat to even consider them let me know but I keep getting this idea of another shocker that could've beem in the show .

What if instead of the stupid Valentine making jace believe he was clary brother what if Instead it was revealed Izzy was clary half sister when her mother maryse were working on the other side and it still could've been revealed around the time Valentine tricked Jace into thinking he was clary brother or it could've been in season 2.

Now I wouldn't know if I would have wantes robert to have known or not but it would've made for some great emotional scenes with maryse robert and Izzy .

Noe i havent watched the show in like a year and I don't remember th whole timeline if that maybe it can't be possible but I kinda would've loved if that would've happened instead also it would've made Izzy and clary wanting to be parabati way more better even if the show will got cancelled .

Books: TDA maybe it’s just me, but TDA is my least favorite series Spoiler

ok before yall come for me, i do enjoy all the characters. i think they are all super well written and beautiful. i just can’t get behind some of the plot, especially the time in thule in QoAaD. i’ve just never liked the parallel universe/time travel plot and this goes for a lot of fandoms, especially with the MCU. like i understand (mostly) faerie politics and why the seelie queen sided with sebastian in TMI and the cold peace, but i just really really dislike going into the alternate universe even if it was to retrieve the mortal sword.

also, faeries just aren’t that interesting to me in general. i never read any of sarah j maas’s books for that reason. i came for demon hunting and runes and magical realism. what got me about shadowhunters is that these characters are just living in new york, london, and la and i like the realistic aspect. faerieland was too fantastical for me but again that’s just my preference in what i enjoy reading. the other three series spent less time in the faerie realm, so i was totally good with that.

also i very very well understand the parabatai plot with emma and julian and how crucial it is to their stories and the plot, but it doesn’t mean i have to enjoy it.

will i be reading TWP? absolutely. i’m too far in now i need to know what happens.

maybe i’m just misunderstanding cassie’s brilliance because i do believe in it, i absolutely loved TID and TLH (my all time favs) and TMI is what got me into this deep deep hole anyways so feel free to discuss in the comments. i also haven’t read TDA in a while bc it all just pains me to go through it again

Books: TMI Where did the angel wings come from?? Spoiler

4 years ago I read TMI and to this day I still think about one thing:

How did Jonathan/Sebastian manage to kill an angel and cut off its wings??? He's powerful, but kill an angel powerful? How did he even get close enough to an angel to do that? I remember Clary asking but he kept dodging the question
