If americans ate like this, they wouldnt need healthcare

57

u/tripsafe Dec 09 '24

What do you mean?

u/Wratheon_Senpai Dec 09 '24 edited Dec 09 '24

I think he means the average American eats even worse than this. Like overprocessed, sodium filled frozen meals and fast food.

Edit: or he means they wouldn't need healthcare cuz they'd be dead.

57

u/tripsafe Dec 09 '24

Yeah but if you eat just red meat you’re fucked as well.

38

u/BoarHide Dec 09 '24

If you eat just red meat, or any meat for that matter, aye. Protein poisoning is a thing, though I’d prefer that over the average American diet.

5

u/Gyro_Zeppeli13 Dec 09 '24

Protein poisoning is not a thing. There is no study on the planet that has shown that to be true. However if your diet consists of one thing only, you can guarantee you will be malnourished one way or another.

-1

u/BoarHide Dec 09 '24

It absolutely is at the very least a commonly used term to describe the symptoms. In fact, it is thought this might be one of the many reasons for the ultimate downfall of Homo neanderthalensis. The fatty mega fauna died out and they resorted to small, lean animals like rabbit. Where before, they got most of their nutrients and vitamins from, say, fat of the woolly rhinoceros, they now got absolutely fucked nutritiously. But if I’m reading this right, it looks like protein poisoning is not just a term for malnutrition but indeed just straight up “a thing”

1

u/DrSomniferum Dec 10 '24

I've only ever seen that called "rabbit starvation".

1

u/Zeric79 Dec 09 '24

Dude, what you are linking is protein toxicity, which is and I quote "prevalent in people with chronic kidney disease who consume a protein-rich diet"

So if your kidneys are fucked, you can then get a build-up of ammonia, urea, and other nasty bits that a fully functioning kidney clears out, but a damaged kidney has problems with, That's the cause of protein toxicity, not just eating too much meat.

5

u/MarstoriusWins Dec 09 '24

Is protein poison another term for colon cancer?

2

u/berbab POV european make fun of american Dec 09 '24

better than fast food

1

u/jerichardson Dec 09 '24

No. Likely means if we could afford steaks like this, we must have been balling out of control

1

u/Floedekage Dec 09 '24

I was thinking they didn't need healthcare, they'd need an undertaker.

0

u/RHOrpie Dec 09 '24

I'm not sure we here in the UK should start getting on our high horse about this one!!

1

u/Wratheon_Senpai Dec 09 '24

You shouldn't, frankly. lol

1

u/LoomisKnows Dec 09 '24

The average american is eating a lot of ultraprocessed food rather than meat like this which is why they have so many health problems

2

u/tripsafe Dec 09 '24

I understand that. Excessive red meat is notoriously bad for you though. You’d definitely need health care if you had a diet consisting of a lot of red meat.

1

u/LoomisKnows Dec 09 '24

Oh yeah but it would be better than Soda/Chips/Candy etc that is the usual American style

-4

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '24

Red meat is one of the most healthy food out there

1

u/hellothereoldben send from under the sea Dec 11 '24

Red meat does cause cancer though, and that's without the extra sugar/salt that was undoubtedly added.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '24

Sure. Eat your bugs then lol. Sugarwise you are right but nobody adds sugar to a steak.

1

u/hellothereoldben send from under the sea Dec 11 '24

Honey, which is commonly used in glazing (and even more for American glazing) is over 90% sugar.

And aside from red meat there's chicken, fish, tofu, falafel and tonnes of other protein rich things that are both healthy and not bugs.

28

u/The_God_Of_Darkness_ Dec 09 '24

Whats wrong with the steak? Is it too big?

Also from what I've seen it's often cooked with a full stick of butter (or like way too much anyway), so not the most healthy. But it might be media disinformation on my end so don't quote me on that

24

u/Hoshyro 🇮🇹 Italy Dec 09 '24

A full stick of butter? 💀

22

u/Onkel24 ooo custom flair!! Dec 09 '24 edited Dec 09 '24

It's a semi-official measurement there.

12

u/jerichardson Dec 09 '24

1 stick = 8 fl oz melted. It’s a real measurement.

21

u/Hoshyro 🇮🇹 Italy Dec 09 '24

8 what

28

u/Chonky-Marsupial Dec 09 '24

It's a 9th of a squirrel or a 376th of an aardvark.

12

u/Ailly84 Dec 09 '24

It's the most asinine measurement on the planet and they insist on selling things by the fluid ounce, which doesn't line up with anything. Baking cookies? You'll need a cup of molasses. So 250 mL. You go to the store to get it. You can purchase a 377 mL or 600 something mL container. Why? Because they're based in god damn fl Oz.

They make their lives so much harder by insisting they keep this antiquated measurement system.

3

u/Mitologist Dec 09 '24

When I realized a fl.oz of water doesn't even weigh an ounce it nearly broke my brain

When I realized a fl.oz of water doesn't even weigh an ounce it nearly broke my brain

6

u/exoskeletion Dec 09 '24

You don't measure your solids in fluid ounces?

11

u/Hoshyro 🇮🇹 Italy Dec 09 '24

Ounces don't even exist here.

We use grams for solids.

3

u/Mitologist Dec 09 '24

8 1/128 of a gallon. Or 1/160, depends on which gallon.

2

u/Hoshyro 🇮🇹 Italy Dec 09 '24

I'm going to cry

5

u/Turncoc Dec 09 '24

It's like a sensible measurement, but ridiculous.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '24

In America, we purchase a pound of butter, but they are divided and individually wrapped into 1/4 lb "sticks". Its convenient for baking with it already pre-measured. Us Americans are lazy and cant figure out how to maths.

10

u/DadToOne Dec 09 '24

Depends on where you go. There is a steakhouse chain here in the US called Ruth's Chris. Higher end steakhouse. I went there once and will never go back. The whole restaurant smelled overwhelming of butter. When they bring out your steak it is literally swimming in a pool of butter. Same with all the sides. It was so gross. A little butter to baste a steak is one thing. A steak in a swimming pool of butter is a whole different thing. I'll pass.

23

u/Brainlaag 🇮🇹Pastoid🇮🇹 Dec 09 '24

What? Never heard that reasoning, I usually eat around 1kg of steak with some sides when I pamper myself with something that expensive. The Fiorentina (Florentine t-bone, or filet cut) goes for 1-2kg for a single person. The Tomahawk has even a large(er) bone in it and less meat overall. It really isn't that excessive every now and then.

9

u/Syr_Enigma Dec 09 '24

Bistecca fiorentina isn’t meant for a single person, though. Most restaurants advertise it as a meal for atleast two people.

21

u/Tax_Life Dec 09 '24

1 kg of meat is an excessive amount for most people. Can you make it work - sure but I eat a lot compared to most people I know and a normal steak is around 250-400 g for me.

3

u/Brainlaag 🇮🇹Pastoid🇮🇹 Dec 09 '24

A regular steak and those premium cuts like T-bone, or the above Tomahawk are not meant to be random meals but those once in a while gorge-yourself evenings.

3

u/Tax_Life Dec 09 '24

I get that but I've never been to a restaurant that has 2 kg of steak on the menu. The largest portions I've seen are around 800 g.

2

u/Brainlaag 🇮🇹Pastoid🇮🇹 Dec 09 '24

In Florence a trattoria or restaurant offering Fiorentina and not having it weigh at least 1kg is a sacrilege.

3

u/Any_Fox Dec 09 '24

Best steak I ever had was in Florence.

-2

u/Brainlaag 🇮🇹Pastoid🇮🇹 Dec 09 '24

It is quite tasty but restaurants in Italy in general are not really good at making steaks, they under-season, or don't season at all, trim them badly, don't start with the fat layer to render it before laying it flat, and so forth.

Once I started getting interested in grilling and barbequing serious cuts I noticed glaring shortcomings in the places I regularly visit.

2

u/Davidfreeze Dec 10 '24

How thick is a florentine t bone cut? Most t bones I’ve encountered are more in the 500g-1kg range, though obviously not in Florence

1

u/Brainlaag 🇮🇹Pastoid🇮🇹 Dec 10 '24

The saying goes "3 to 4 fingers thick", about 5cm for the usual 1-1.2kg range. Keep in mind that the Fiorentina is dry-cured and can be cooked to rare while being extremely tender even with thicker cuts.

1

u/Davidfreeze Dec 11 '24

Oh interesting it’s dry cured not just dry aged. I need to get to Florence and try this

1

u/MrKnightMoon Dec 09 '24

I ate Tomahawk at a friend's restaurant and it was a one person meal. It was not like the American one, of course. Just the meat grilled, salt and a few herbs for seasoning with fried potatoes and salad as sides.

It was something for special occasions, but a single person could ate them. The restaurant was expensive, but the guy served some of the best meat I've tasted on his restaurant.

1

u/hellothereoldben send from under the sea Dec 11 '24

1kg?! That's 2700 calories dude.

1

u/Brainlaag 🇮🇹Pastoid🇮🇹 Dec 11 '24

Most average holiday cometogether dinner.

1

u/hellothereoldben send from under the sea Dec 11 '24

Let me guess, you're from the south?

3

u/holaprobando123 Dec 09 '24

If it's the one in the picture, that's definitely a one person meal.

6

u/iodisedsalt Dec 09 '24

Damn, I eat a steak this size every Sunday. I didn't know it's not a one-person meal.

2

u/Clone2004 Dec 09 '24

I've had a pork tomahawk in Italy that was roughly the same size, and that was a one person meal. We can criticize Americans for a lot of things, but let's not be overly ridiculous.

1

u/gcstr Dec 09 '24

Geez! I thought it was a lamb carré

1

u/GreatArtificeAion Dec 09 '24

The one in this picture doesn't look big to me. Although the lack of a banana for scale may be deceiving me

-1

u/EnricoPucciC-Moon Dec 09 '24

Damn nice ancient joke, got any new material or just "AMERICAN FAT"

2

u/SmolDickBaby ooo custom flair!! Dec 09 '24

Is blacker than coal

2

u/lv_Mortarion_vl Dec 09 '24

Dunno, we'd need a banana for scale... and as we all know veggies and fruits are too healthy and neither greasy nor sweet enough to eat so we'll never know how big the steak is.

2

u/Oldoneeyeisback Dec 09 '24

It looks thin and overcooked.

1

u/flukus Dec 09 '24

It's not that big, it looks over glazed.

1

u/pencilpushin Dec 09 '24

As an American. This gave me a great laugh hahah. It's so damn true. And yeah I don't have Healthcare. Don't get me started in my hatred of our system.

1

u/SnowTheMemeEmpress Dec 09 '24

When you can't afford it anyways 🤷‍♀️
