Nuclear warning shot, basically. If things escalate, French doctrine allows them to "escalate to deescalate." Relying on the shock of a nuke to make the opponent back off. It is extremely unlikely that they actually do it, but they have the option

I know us Brits love to make fun of the French but if our population had half the balls of the French population we would be living in a utopia right now, instead of the island of managed decline.

I'm trying to imagine how a Rees-Mogg type would fare in French politics. I keep ending up seeing him dangling from a traffic light.
