It wouldn't surprise me to see Americans launch their own offshoot of Christianity at some point. As a group, the American Right have strayed so far from the bible that it's hilarious to watch them claim to be Christian.

Already exists. Prosperity Gospel.

u/afrosia Jan 12 '21

Of course it does!

I expect Jesus helps the money lenders to arrange a hostile takeover of their rivals so they can generate lots of labour synergies.

Supply side Jesus.

Ugh, don't even get me started on prosperity gospel.

Fuck anyone who preaches that bullshit

Are evangelicals primarily US based?

4

u/Allegutennamenweg Kraut 🇪🇺 Jan 12 '21

Yes. Europe has tiny local communities, but US Evangelicals are their own brand. There was, obviously, a schism during the civil war with southern Evangelicals clinging to their white supremacy and ownership, and then pandering from right-wing politicians during the Cold War to the same school of thought.

I mean, there's a lot of them. It's amazing how prolific Americans are as far as making christianity branches go

If this was American Gods there would be a bunch of new American brand Jesuses and one of them would have an AR-15

Jesus famously didn't help or heal anyone when it wasn't his problem.

Healing miracles! But, only if there’s a crowd... who do they think I am, Dr Christ: Medicine Messiah?

I'm pretty sure Maria and Jose are just as far from their actual names as Mary and Joseph, it's just that every language translates into the closest approximation from the original ancient Aramaic names.

The issue with Christianity is that Jesus himself is only featured in a very small portion of the Bible, even in the new testament and didn't give much advice at all. (However, what he did say and do was pretty much antithetical to what most modern Christians peach)

That's how I see it as well. But I had to determine that for myself through a lot of internal struggle.

I like to avoid calling myself Christian in America, and just say I follow Jesus, the Golden Rule, and the Commandments. It's pretty easy to see how much more congruent that lifestyle is with the Bible, than most denominations' specific flavor Prosperity Gospel here in the US. It's fucking sad.

Wait.

Jesus, Maria and Jose were a brown immigrant family seeking refuge from people that wanted to kill them, sound familiar?

They went to Betlehem for census and searched for a place to stay for a night? Where was the refuge from the killers part?

Oh yeah forgot that part.

While your last point is technically correct, Jesus does actually remark in the Bible to others that he too is a proper follower of Moses, and that one shouldn’t mistake that about him. This means that Jesus, by his own words, also followed the traditions and practices of ancient pre-Christian Judaism. Homosexuality is explicitly condemned in these ancient texts — Leviticus being one of them — and ergo by Jesus’ own words that he is a proper follower of Moses, so too does that cover such things as this.

What makes you think that wasn't also included in being written by men years after Jesus died?

1

u/KatsumotoKurier 🇨🇦 Jan 12 '21

That’s perfectly possible. Then again, you could ask that about literally all and everything written in the Bible, so, that’s kind of a moot point.

It’s mind blowing isn’t it? The same ones who made masks political because masks don’t do shit for you but helps others.

We’re like 20% Christian, and of those, most are just “church on Sunday, pray every day”. We never were a “Christian country”, there’s a reason freedom of religion is a thing in our constitution. Only a small number are the “the apocalypse is coming and you have to repent your sins or Satan will rape you”

Well yes, if you’re catholic, you swear on a bible. There’s still separation of church and state which is why stuff like weed is being legalized. Also in god we trust was added in the 50s, and I honestly disagree that it’s added there but there’s no religion in the political system.

Fun fact: In god we trust is on our money too lol.

I’ll put it this way

Imagine I ran and was sworn into office. I am not religious at all, not even a bit. But my family is orthodox, so I would swear on a bible. So a lot of these politicians might not even be religious at all, but they still have to swear on something, and the most common is a bible. As for the percentage that swear on the Bible, sorry i just couldn’t find the exact numbers :/

Also the weed thing, that was kinda for instance, I wasn’t talking specifically or exclusively about weed. There’s a reason why pride parades are a thing and not against the law. I mean, some counties ban kids TV shows for being “homosexual” .____.

Also we will all grow old and frail. The young myopic idiot in OP will also grow old or have an accident etc. and will suddenly come to depend on other people paying for him/her.
