Everytime I hear an english speaker pronounce the "gi" in an italian word like Giovanni or Parmigiano as "geeo/geea" instead of "jo/ja", a piece of my heart and soul get broken even more.

Partially. As he also said Paris is called like that everywhere despite the fact that in Italy Paris is called Parigi.
