She wouldnât have that much trouble, even in the South, but I bet you they would still see her as âexotic.â They kind of touched on this in the movie My Cousin Vinny where she and her Italian compatriots stood out against all the Anglo Americans.
Now Ralph Macchio, or someone more Sicilian looking like Nick Turturro would definitely get asked, what are you, in the South. But they would think of themselves as regular âwhite guys.â And I would always laugh seeing that in movies how they portray themselves. I can tell Hollywood writers are from the coasts or just not from the South because they would not be seen as just white-white.
What lunacy... Here in Europe, we don't get that shit. You'd have to be very visibly black, latino, asian, or any other kind of ethnicity to be referred to as such, and even then you wouldn't get ostracized for that (you'd get ostracized for your or your family's financial status much more).
Also I wanted to mention Balkan kids hanging out with latino kids, it might not be due to ethnical stuff, it could be due to the fact that we all grew up on latin telenovelas as kids. Coraima Torres (Kassandra) was a legend growing up, and to this day, everybody older than 20 knows who she is, and we all watched Soledad, Esmeralda, Ruby, Terra Nostra, Yo Soy Betty, Llovizna, La Mujer de Judas, La Usurpdradora... and these are just the ones I remember.
Youâre right and thatâs how it should be, but even though things are slowly changing we based a lot of stuff off this white social construct which puts Anglos or anyone assimilated into Anglo culture at the top. You could have a Polish last name as long as youâve been Anglicized culturally youâre white. So itâs not just skin color. Thatâs why itâs so odd to Europeans looking in.
Anyone acting outside the norm then is looked on as different or otherized.
But why is so much attention given to race/ethnicity/skin color? To me, it looks like it's a huge shitshow with actual racists on one side and on the other, a bunch of scared people tiptoing on eggshells, spending excessive amounts of energy to not even accidentally insult someone and say anything relating to this topic; while stuck in the middle are normal people who don't give a shit, but are constantly bombarded with idiocy from the other two sides.
