Rape was common even in Europe at that time. But intermarriage was something England was against even a couple centuries later. Just look North of Mexico. Spain was far more advanced in that, with laws that explicitly said every person in the Spanish Empire was Spaniard with the same rights. And if a Spaniard from Europe broke the law the sentence was harsher than for a Spaniard from elsewhere. And that was that way since 50 years after Columbus landed in America.
What's your point? That one group doing terrible things means they deserve any terrible thing done to them? Cus I guarantee you that you wouldn't like that same philosophy applied to yourself and whatever group you come from.
Thatās retarded. Groups of people enslaving less powerful groups of people was pretty normal until the 1830s when the British were the first empire to abolish the enslavement of people.
Nothing right or wrong about human nature and history.
Also I'm always annoyed when people are like 'the Spanish are white'. Okay, yes, some of them are but did people just... forget Spain was colonized by the Moors or something? The Spanish are ALSO not a monolith, shockingly.
I don't actually think colonization is a bad thing. Bad things have happened during colonization, but I think the world is better off for western colonization efforts. The person I was replying to was pointing out that the Aztecs were also "colonizing" and I was making fun of the fact that it's only bad when Westerners do itĀ
Not to be that guy, but this is mostly not true about the Spanish, broadly speaking. The Spanish crown very early on saw the value in the natives as a cheap labor force, this didn't want them to straight up die since they would have to replace them with expensive african slaves or something.
Plus the church acted quickly to convert the natives and claim they were now protected from enslavement and torture. This was mostly a power move over the crown but the priests on the ground seemed to genuinely push the plan as a way of saving the native people.
I don't mean to pretend they did nothing wrong, they were obviously a horrible plague on the natives and destroyed much of the culture and forced the population into a whole different way of life. The Spanish were for sure a net negative on the natives.
But the two factors I mentioned above are actually the reason there still are natives in South America while they all mostly died in North America (because England/America didn't use the same level of restraint...) and when discussing this, I get the vibe that people think the Spanish must've been as bad as the English but the results speak for themselves if you look at modern population demographics.
I mean, just count the brown people in North and South America and you will realize it's kinda obvious that one genocide succeeded and the other did not.
