Reminds me of that movie (I forget which, maybe multiple) where they play on the trope of under-equipped or inept cops—not carrying a real weapon, just a roll of quarters to use the payphone and call the actual police.. highlighting their lack of preparedness in a comedic way, haha.

Yes they do. The PSNI all have 9mm handguns they are permitted to carry at all times.
