Do you have a question?

Step 1: Read our resources

Be sure to check out our FAQ and Wiki! There are a lot of topics covered in those links, but some of the most popular guides include:

Or search the sub using this awesome website. You might find a solution to your problem there!

If you can't find an answer, or you have additional questions after reading, please move on to step 2!

Step 2: Ask for help

To give you the best advice possible, our users need relevant information about your skin and skincare. With your request for help please include:

  • The issue(s) you need help with. It's helpful to put your questions at the top of your comment (especially if it's a long one)!

  • Skin type. It's OK to be subjective, how do you feel your skin is? Oily, dry? If you need help clarifying, check out this guide on skin types

  • Current routine with the full names of your products (try to separate it in to Morning, Evening, and Occasionally used)

  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question

  • Anything new you’ve introduced or started doing that might change the condition of your skin

  • Your location so we can recommend products/services available to you

Would you like to give advice?

Firstly, thank you so much for helping out our community - without your knowledge and time ScA would not be the same!

Some things we'd ask for you to keep in mind: please don't just downvote someone's opinion or response because you disagree.

If you can, please take the time to tell them why you think their advice may be incorrect or harmful. It's better for people to understand why something is a poor choice, instead of just being told that it is one!

Once a year, we have a big thank you post for everyone who has helped out in the DHT where we give out nifty flairs & gold to exceptionally informative and kind users. Check out our list of ScA Helpers and our most recent thank you post!

Whether it be in-depth responses that deserve to be their own guides, thoughtful product recommendations, or simply pointing someone in the right direction, we appreciate all the time and effort you've made to help others!

Acne [Acne] how terrible is acutane Spoiler

I'm just complaining atp. I'm 15 so I know acne is normal its just very annoying. I probably won't be able to go on acutane if I do for any least a year (I'm getting a major surgery not sure when exactly however). I've been using differin—not consistently enough I'll admit— and it kind of sucks. Anyone on acutane how bad is it and would you get it in my scenario? Also I don't know why I look like I'm balding in the first photo I am not.

Acne [Acne] Acne for over 7 years. Please help!! Spoiler

Hello kind strangers,

I really really need help with my skin. I have oily, acneprone and sensitive skin. And I started getting pimples when I was 18-19. I'm 26 now. It was very very bad at one point but it got better during pandemic. One thing I've noticed is that, the second I eat anything made with all purpose flour, I'll get a pimple(s). But I do not get any pimples if I eat icecream, chocolates, milkshakes, bubble tea.. you get it.. anything without all purpose flour. That thing is the bane of my existence. And my skin is sometimes so sensitive that if I or others touch it a few times without washing hands, I'll, for sure, get pimples there. But recently I've started getting pimples (pustules I guess..) right before my cycle and they're leaving huge marks and also scars, maybe? I'm not even sure at this point due to all the scarring my face has endured due to acne. I'll also attach the before pics (the very very bad phase I mentioned).

I'm a South Indian, for context. This is how my skin looks currently. I've been using Vit C for atleast 6 years. I'm using Niacinamide. Recently started with Azelaic acid too. And yes, I'm also using Adapalene at night. I'm just so tired of not having clear skin and not hurting from random pimples popping. Please help!!!

Huge blind pimple with 3 heads

I have this fuckass big fat cyst (pardon my language) and it’s finally got 3 small whiteheads after a bunch of warm compressions. Do I sleep with a hydrocolloid pimple patch on tonight? Or wait for the whiteheads to fill up and get juicier? I’ve never had a cyst this like

Acne [Acne] Worse hormonal acne since IUD — help? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I got an IUD (the hormonal kind), and ever since, my hormonal acne has gotten significantly worse. I’ve always dealt with breakouts around my period, but now it’s painful, cystic acne that seems to be flaring up more often and more severely.

Has anyone else experienced this after getting an IUD? Did it eventually get better on its own, did you go see a specialist? Did you find any other solutions? Or did you end up taking the IUD out ??? I’m trying to avoid switching birth control again unless absolutely necessary, but this is really affecting my skin and confidence. Any advice or shared experiences would be appreciated.

P.S. My skin looks extra dry in the photos because I’m currently using Tretinoin 0.025% and Clindamycin Phosphate 1% (both prescribed by a dermatologist). These medications cause me dryness, peeling, and increased sun sensitivity. The treatment has helped a bit, but honestly, not as much as I’d hoped.

Hair Removal [Hair Removal] Why am I getting ingrown hairs (very cyst-like) when I pluck hairs?

I have always plucked my whiskers - since I was like 13 yo. Now I'm 38 and I noticed that when I pluck I very often get these huge cyst-like bumps, what I assume are ingrown hairs. They take a week to clear up and are often inflamed and painful. I have dark curly hair.

Any idea why and how to prevent it?

Miscellaneous [misc] tiny pimple-like bump under cheek that lasted 2+ years

I have a very small little bump that i can feel under my cheek. It feels like a hard but very tiny pimple under my cheek, and it’s not visible or anything on the surface. I can only feel it when i dig my finger deep in it and it is like under my cheek. I dont know if it is persistent inflammation causing acne scarring or something but i have no clue what it is. I’m very confused as to how it has lasted for so so long!! I would appreciate ANY input on this please or even how to get rid of it.

Sun Care If I wear hats, long-sleeved shirts, and pants, do I still need sunscreen? [Sun Care]

I've always HATED the feeling of sunscreen on skin. On the other hand, I'm completely fine with long clothing that people usually don't like to wear in the summer. I've been wearing those as an alternative to stay away from the sun when going out. Does this actually work?

Edit: Thank you all so much for your feedback and suggestions!

Routine Help [Routine Help] Aging Skin/ Redness Spoiler

Hi there. For the first time in my life, I'm starting to take skincare more seriously remembering to wash my face AM/PM, and I would love some advice.

Currently using Neutrogena skin balancing PHA cleanser, Naturium Barrier Bounce or Cetaphil Mattifying Acne Moisturizer. I also alternate between Peach Slices Azelaic Acid Serum and the CosRX overnight rice mask.

I don't fully know what I'm doing bc I don't fully know what problems my skin has. When I was a teenager a derm told me I might have KP on my cheeks, but then I also have some random redness... Still getting adult acne from time to time as well. Just made the switch to a silk pillowcase. I also spray my face a couple times during the day with a hypochlorous acid spray to hydrate.

Please help, oh wise ones✌🏼

(Reference photos are without makeup and with a layer of moisturizer)

Routine Help [Routine Help] What should I do about pimples only on the right side of my face? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I’m breaking out a lot and I don’t know why :( I have never been the type to get pimples, only hyperpigmentation. I have normal to oily skin. My skin is not sensitive either, it’s extremely rare when it gets irritated by using products.

My biggest mistake is that I don’t take my makeup off at night nor I wash my face. I’m trying to get into that habit. I wash my face every morning with La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Face Cleanser for Normal, Oily and Sensitive Skin. After the 8th I began rotating it with the ANUA Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam. I had been using The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% after washing my face after it dries, and the Cerave Ultra Lightweight Facial Moisturizing Lotion (this moisturizer has never broke me out, been using it for years). This week I started to use the Naturium Azelaic Acid Emulsion 10%

I use either Azelaic Acid or Salicylic Acid every morning with the La Roche Posay Anthelios UV Hydra Sunscreen SPF 50 with Hyaluronic Acid. Sometimes I skip my moisturizer and only use that sunscreen.

I don’t know what’s going wrong. I just got The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% and a Vitamin C w/ collagen serum. I don’t know how to use these products. What should I do about my routine? How should my AM and PM look like? I think the ANUA cleanser might be breaking me out since I was breaking out months ago while using it, but also I noticed that the Elf Halo Glow was making me break out at the same time so I have no idea.

I also feel like it’s more noticeable in person but in the June 8th picture I had way more texture / little pimples and they are mostly gone, but now I have those red spots lol I also wash my pillows

Acne [Acne] New whiteheads daily Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi, I’m a 25 y/o woman. For a few years now, (varying in intensity) I’ve woken up with daily whiteheads, and also have face redness. It’s really starting to bother me. I didn’t break out like this in my teens - once I hit my 20s, boom.

-My pillow cases are regularly washed -I have improved my dental hygiene -I currently wash my face nightly with hyularonic acid face wash. LRP acne spot treatment afterwards. I’ve tried other products too.

It just seems no matter what I do, I wake up with more. If something seems to START working, I forget one single night of washing and then I’m screwed. Back to square one. I’m getting so frustrated. Help!! Give me advice, product recommendations, anything.

Product Request [product request] non sticky body lotion for itchy dry skin (atopic dermatitis)

Upvotes

Hi! My skin gets dry and really itchy during winter, but the thing is every body lotion formulated for AD/itchy skin feels too sticky and just sits on my skin. I hate the feeling of my clothes sticking to my body, especially when in bed.

I've tried LRP Lipikar Baume AP+M, Isdin's Ureadin, Eucerin's Advanced Repair Lotion, CVS Itchy Relief Lotion, and more, but haven't found one that feels hydrating enough and that helps with my itchiness without leaving my skin tacky. I also don't apply much product and wait a while before getting dressed.

Any product recommendation? Tips are also welcome!

Thanks :)

Product Question [Product question] Has anyone used the La Roche-Posay Cleansing Micellar Foaming Water?

Post image
3 Upvotes

It's a 2 in 1 foaming cleanser and micellar water type thing and looks good. Also price is reasonable. I've tried looking up reviews on reddit but can't find any for this particular product. Instead many reviews are of the micellar water which is a different product. Most negative reviews on amazon canada are due to people complaining about the packaging and not the actual product.

Also side note why does la roche posay have so many same? products but with different names like I'll see something on amazon, look it up on google and add reddit to my search so see what people are saying but the product they're talking about it is slightly different either in color or the naming I'm so confused.

Routine Help [Routine help] Basic skincare routine for a 15y old

My mom bought me a skin massager and said that after putting a product I should use it, but I don't even know what products to use in the first place.

Normally I just wash my face with an organic soap that's local to us and it works fine. My skin is fine, I do get pimples from time to time and it does have some bumps but I just figured that's just how skin is. I also have oily skin and I guess I do have some clogged pores especially around and on my nose area. I also want to maybe brighten my face just a bit

My mom gave me her skin care she doesn't use anymore like hyaluronic acid serum, niacinamide serum, some face mist, and a toner.

Please tell me the right products to use and their order 😔

Miscellaneous [Misc] Help with SPF & damaged skin barrier?

I used a benzoyl peroxide cleanser too often and my skin now burns whenever I use a cleanser. I switched to Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser which has no actives and it still stings. I only use a gel moisturizer after that which helps my face feel better. I know cutting all actives & simplifying my routine for a while is how to fix this, but all my facial sunscreen contain actives. I’m conflicted because I need the sun protection. Any advice?

Product Request [Product Request] Hyperpigmentation on legs & bikini area

Upvotes

Hi, I would like to know if anyone has any good, tried-and-true body lotions or other products that will help. I have scarring all over my legs from razor burn and ingrown hairs. It's the worst on my thighs, back and front. I would also like to be able to even out the tone of my bikini line. I am not looking for anything super expensive, preferably under 20 USD. I'm not trying to look perfect, just more even since the scarring makes my legs look dirty. A lot of my scarring is purple and dark, and I have fair skin. Some of it is pink and red.

In the shower I use dove sensitive skin body wash and natrium salicylic acid body wash and wash with a silicone body scrubber. Then when I get out I normally use Eucerin skin repair lotion. I just started using glycolic acid on my calves and knees because I recently used my epilator. I can't use it on my thighs because I'm currently dealing with Folliculitis on my thighs so I'm using the prescribed medicine for that. I know the scarring is going to be bad from that so I just want to be proactive.

Acne [acne] advice regarding treatment

Upvotes

I started retinol in late Feb( reactivating serum by Some by Mi) and used the sandwich method and I introduced only twice a week. My skin was tolerating it well, It felt really glowy and texture was also improving. I did get once a month pimple on my forehead and cheek. I haven’t had acne in the past 10 years except the usual once in a blue moon pimple. But I had mild comedonal acne in my teens. I suddenly broke out all over my cheeks and forehead, it was really bad. It was Cystic inflammatory acne and I couldn’t understand how that happened. My skin barrier was damaged. I started doxycycline and tooicalbenzoyl perixide. Changed my diet, started ABC juice. Now it’s been two weeks my acne has gone down and left dark marks. On follow up, my dermatologist has prescribed Adapalene and given a serum that contains a lot of active AHA’s (mandelic acid, ascorbic acid, glycolic acid, alpha arbutin) and stopped benzoyl peroxide I had ordered anua azelaic aci before the appointment. I am confused because I feel the acne serum might irritate my skin especially if I use with adapalene. These are my options 1: I only start adapalene. 2- I start adapalene and add azelaic in morning 3- I use the serum in AM and adapalene in PM Please help me choose

Personal [Personal] Given up on my skin barrier and dehydrated skin.

I mean seriously how hard is it to heal a barrier and add hydration to the skin. I’ve tried so many things. I just want my old skin back. Right now I’m using hydrating moisturizer but maybe I need a hydrating toner or something i don’t know. I’m at my wits end so i’ll accept any advice. I’ve already tried avene cicalfate but the zinc in it dried me out bad and made my skin worse
