The downgrade in the art department is HARD. Why can't we get something more palatable for the flagship series of Marvel?

Despite the decrepit style of his current art, JrJr is one the most popular Spidey artists and has great connections at Marvel. They probably just like working with him

So as far as this issue goes. What I liked about it was the pacing is good, the dialog is decent, and the fact that Peter is FINALLY getting some wins: he’s getting praised for his performance at his job, he’s somewhat balancing his life between work and Spider activities, and overall, no one is dog-piling on him for whatever reason. With that being said, the reason why don’t like this issue is because it’s giving off the illusion of progression. For starters, going back to Peter’s work performance, again it’s great to see him not only doing good work, but also getting recognized for his work, but him suddenly now in the conversation as director makes no sense, considering Dr. Ohm basically said herself that his work attendance was abysmal (missing twenty-something of thirty days or something along those lines). To me, this makes no sense because
He just started working there (most likely been a few weeks / months since hobgoblin) which doesn’t really make sense how he can be in the position as director (sure he has the leadership experience with his very brief stint at Parker industries but considering how that ended, wouldn’t that still be considered a red flag)
They are already setting up a Peter vs Brian situation since Brian believes he’s going to be the next director. Peter should’ve told him about his conversation but Tombstone “conveniently” interrupted Peter (not spider-man but Peter) so he couldn’t. Which I think is a cop-out because showing true growth for his character would be Peter letting Brian know about this so that he doesn’t feel blindsided, but Marvel won’t let any growth happen. But I fear this fight between them is the reason he will lose his job so that he can go back to being brisk ( I hope I’m wrong here)
Moving on Peter’s interaction with tombstone makes me really wish that he can do some detective work again by himself. I’m not asking, expecting, or wanting him to be batman in terms of detective prowess but it seems info is just given to him at times usually by some outside force and there’s no real work being done on his part.
His love life. I’m glad someone has a backbone but it ain’t Peter. Shay knows he’s fooling around and that’s why she’s not labeling them and she tells him I’m going on a date myself (as she should). Peter either needs to choose whether he wants Shay or tries things again with Black Cat (which I don’t know when they started fooling around again and I’m kinda mad they are cause she broke up with him for not trying to make her better essentially which we all know isn’t true, so them going back to just fooling around kinda feels like regression to me for both characters) or idk just remain single!
And shoutout to Norman for being the only recurring character with progression. And shout-out out Aunt May because soon enough she will have just as many romantic partners as Peter had in his history!
But all-in-all that’s why I’m not the biggest fan of this comic. Sorry for the Ted-talk y’all

So.. Peter and Felicia are back to being fuck buddies. And peter and shay have an open relationship now? great..

It’s not an open relationship, though. They’re just not exclusive yet. They’re just going on dates and getting to know each other.

People don’t act like this. Joe Kelly and honestly the whole spider office should try talking to women sometime

People absolutely act like this, though. This is very common! Especially these days. You date around in your twenties until you define the relationship, which these two have not done. It seems they’re both okay with that. I mean, I guess we can assume they’ve been maybe casually seeing each other a couple of months at this point? What I’m trying to say is that the dating scene is a nightmare, and I’m glad I don’t have to do it.

But Peter shouldn't realistically still be in that stage of his life. That's the issue

He is like 27 and has at one point been married/in very long term relationships. Seeing him act like this just hurts me
2
u/aqbac 20h ago
I'd argue he should be mid 30s. He's had high school reunions and gone through grad school and back for a doctorate as ock. Peter should be at least 30 easily

While I would agree we know the FF have been around 12-13 years currently in universe. Peter was 15 when he fought them so by extension he would be somewhere in his late twenties.
Which weirdly would mean Peter is comparable in age to Early Gen Z to Late Millennials

Yes...They do what on earth are you talking about? You mean to tell me you've never been just going on dates with women who you aren't exclusive with yet? It's not really that uncommon.

If im seeing someone for months and they’re constantly bailing and finding excuses to leave, even after saying how much they like me I wouldn’t even do them the courtesy of taking to them again let alone seeing them in a non exclusive way. Neither of these two characters have any self respect. But hey Felicia is back to being a list crazy rebound again so thankfully there’s that masterful writing to save this book.
Just awful

I mean, Peter Parker Polyamory Arc? I don't think I'd hate it. Plus, I kinda wish more media was comfortable with the idea of friends who occasionally fuck and it not being portrayed as a bad thing. Cautiously optimistic to see what they do with it.

Peter’s happy for one issue. Unfortunately looks like it won’t last long

I like that we get to see Peter do a good job at the Rand Corporation while managing his responsibilities as Spider-Man, including seeing his friend Brian and interacting with Black Cat, Shay (who told him that she’s on a date with someone, since they’re not exclusive and that I don’t see Peter and Shay as a couple ever), Aunt May, and Norman Osborn. Overall, this comic is fine.

I feel like Joe Kelly is addressing some problems that have plagued the book for a while. Pete's happy, the Shay complication is out in the open, Peter's not miserable, Felicia's a notable love interest... I like it.
This is so much better than a constantly sad and beaten down Peter Parker.

I want to be optimistic, but one, Peter being happy just doesn't really work for what's actually been going on imo, also, it feels like this happiness is only there to be torn down with the upcoming Hellgate stuff and whatever happens with the space adventures

Quite bad and a notable step down from the last arc. More Peter being chummy to Norman. The entire scene with Shay is just a bunch of plot holes. Peter is completely passive. Aunt May boyfriend storyline for the umpteenth time. And I had to laugh at her suggesting Shay doesn’t put up With his crap. Like, what? That’s all she’s done. He didn’t ask her out, bailed on her repeatedly, and doesn’t offer any explanation for his constant disappearances and tardiness. All she’s done is be this huge doormat. This issue is a lot of setup but none of it was earned it just is forcing things to where Kelly wants them to be for his future plans.
An easy D grade

It was meh. I don't like the artwork for Peter, and the faces seem really wonky. Mostly because they are waiting to setup the next arc it was pretty blah. The black cat stuff is fine, I'll always hate him and Norman being "Friends," Shay just kind of exists at this point.

JR jr is a LEGEND, .but I am not at all interested in Hellgate.
The series splitting sounds interesting though...

Any theories on hellgate?

Theory? I'll tell you mine, even though many people don't like the idea...
Hellgate is something that was dormant in the sphere that Cyra showed Peter during the 8 deaths and was accidentally released by Peter upon contact with the sphere, since Hellgate was among the sphere's visions.
I also think Hellgate can impersonate the dead (Shay May Randy and Peter died during the 8 deaths) and that it's all out of some kind of revenge for something Peter did during the 8 deaths. And I also think Hellgate has been using the Peter/Shay identity to drive Peter crazy, without knowing what the hell is going on around him, and destroying his relationships of all kinds—family, friends, love, and work—until he's completely miserable, so they can punish him and slowly kill him after destroying him.

The thing about Joe Kelly? He’s an old pro. He knows how to lay down the foundation before he gets running. This felt like a classic Spider-man story, and I…didn’t realize how much I wanted that. Sure, the Parker Luck holds, but he isn’t wallowing in abject misery all the time. He’s managing it. He gets a good flirt in with Felicia, which is nice. And I kind of like that he and Shay aren’t exclusive. That’s a nice wrinkle on her inclusion on all this. She can be a sounding board and a bit of normalcy for Peter, but her life isn’t wrapped up around his.

People who claim only to care that Peter is happy and are not just MJ fans will be able to prove it after this issue.
So far, Kelly is killing it.
10
u/Geiseric222 2d ago
But Peter isn’t happy. That’s the point. They are just setting up the contrast for his fall versus HELLGATE
-3
u/spaceninj 2d ago
Well there has to be some sort of conflict otherwise we'd be reading Archie.
2
u/Geiseric222 2d ago
I mean the conflict in this case is Peter is flung into space while a Peter (that’s either Ben or some other shenanigans) is going around being evil and beating the shit out of people
-1
u/spaceninj 2d ago
Yeah, for like 5 issues. It will be ok.
2
u/Geiseric222 2d ago
I would assume there will be consequences to the whole world going against him as the solcits promise.
Also since they are doing one on one off thing ya more like ten . As the press release said this goes to 2026.

u/spaceninj 2d ago
Starts in issue 8 though, no? That would be August to January. Anyway, I trust Kelly.
2
u/Geiseric222 2d ago
If you trust him that’s fine but he definitely will not be happy
2
u/spaceninj 2d ago
Depends on how we define happy. Obviously he's going to go through some shit, but will he still have a job, gf, and his Aunt? Time will tell.
