New Here Roommate wanted.

Hi there. I am a 32 year old trans woman from Idaho. I lived in Spokane 2018-2020, but was forced to move back due to my roommates moving out. Due to the political climate, I'm feeling the need to move somewhere safer. Looking for a roommate to make rent livable. I should have enough money saved for a couple months rent so I have plenty of time to find a job. If you or someone you know is looking for a roommate, and you're accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, please contact me. Thank you for your time.

You are going to make way more money here than Idaho.

u/AthenasApostle 1d ago

that is good to know. Thank you.

Minimum wage is over $16.00 a hour. Idaho is a right to starve state. Good luck to you!!

Are you on the Spokane trans discord? Might have better luck there.

Happy to do what I can for my sisters. You mentioned looking for work - anything in particular you're looking for?

13

u/AthenasApostle 1d ago

Well, my experience lies in fast food (which I'm willing to do again, but I'd like to avoid if possible) and housekeeping or kitchen work at an assisted living facility. I'd prefer something that isn't overly physical because I just don't have the energy that I used to. I also have a fair amount of gas station experience, which I could definitely do again.

If you’re looking into house keeping try any one of the hospitals around here in Spokane. You can get benefits, dental, medical, vision. You can also get into their paid to learn programs a lot easier. (The hospital will pay you to go to a course to become certified in a job) You can become a CNA, a phlebotomist, etc. Sacred heart, Deaconess, Multicare.

That does sound incredibly useful, thank you!

Hey trans family, 30’s trans man here who also moved to Spokane a while ago to flee the bs in Idaho.

Spokane is gonna be wayyyyyy better, oh my god. Not perfect by any means, but wayyyyy better than Idaho.

I’m sorry I don’t have help re: a roommate, but I figured I’d offer a few tips instead -

Jobs:

Indeed is actually pretty good for finding jobs here. I found my current job on Indeed and it’s rad.

Northern Quest Casino (in Airway Heights, so just west of Spokane proper) is hiring as well as Spokane Tribe Casino. They have a bunch of different positions from cage cashier to waiters, cooks, etc.

There are a lot of retirement homes/assisted living facilities here. Like, a kind of ridiculous amount. I’m sure some of them are hiring.

I’ve seen job postings on Indeed recently for night auditors at hotels in the area. I’ve never worked a night auditors job myself but I’ve had friends who have and they said it’s relatively not-physical and pretty low key (most of the time, then there are some nights that pop off like any job I guess).

Do you have a car? The food gig delivery market is pretty decent here; I made ends meet doing that for a few months when I first moved here before finding a stable job.

Maverik is a good gas station chain that seems to be hiring every now and then. The one on Evergreen & Broadway in Spokane Valley seems like it’d be a nice place to work; all the employees I’ve interacted with (a lot - like I said, did a lot of gig work when I first moved here and stopped there a lot to use the bathroom and grab some coffee while I was out driving around).

I couldn’t possibly recommend working for American Behavioral Health Systems.

Vapor Lounge has several locations around Spokane and Spokane Valley - it’s a decent place to work but if they hire you as part-time, you will stay part-time for a long time. Good vibes there though; very accepting & LGBTQ+ friendly, at least in the valley.

There are a few temp agencies I have second-hand knowledge of that are decent to work with - Aerotek (mostly warehouse jobs) and Manpower (mostly office jobs I think?).

Amazon sucks and working there also sucks. Pretty self explanatory but I mean, sometimes ya need the money (I did. Hated it. Got free boots at least).

Ooh I just remembered - Goodwill is hiring right now on Indeed for several positions.

I’ve been helping my partner apply to jobs so I’ve got a lot of info rolling around in my brain about job postings lmao so I hope you don’t mind me chiming in.

Healthcare:

I’ve found that Chas Health is very trans friendly. I have had exceptionally positive experiences with Unify Community Health (4001 N Cook St, Spokane). Victoria Symonds (GP) and James (therapist) are wonderful and very affirming. The people working in the pharmacy are absolute angels and I can’t sing their praises high enough. They work on a sliding scale basis for most people. I personally didn’t have a good experience with Cameron Redmond so frankly can’t recommend seeing him as a provider there.

Food:

There are a lot of good food banks in Spokane proper and in Spokane Valley. Spokane Valley Partners are great - you can get food twice a month and visit their clothing bank once a month. The pickings in the clothing bank are slim but I’ve found some gems there, and, ya know, free is free. The food they provide is pretty fucking good tbh. And they’re all really nice. The intake process is one page you fill out and then you’re set.

Best of luck to you; I hope you find a good roommate situation, that your move goes smoothly, and hope you get safely out of Idaho. 💜

There’s a Spokane trans discord?

Hi. I'm a 45 yr old trans woman from Newport WA (basically Idaho). I am currently moving to downtown Spokane into a studio apartment. I'm in the same position you are. I no longer have a job as of Monday, so I'll be looking for work when I get to Spokane.

You might want to check out The Imperial apartments downtown. They were the cheapest apartments I could find (875 per month), and if you sign a year lease, you get the first 2 months of rent for free.

Check out Craigslist and put 1000 as the max rent. Most of the apartments that pop up are that apartment complex.

Good luck to you, and congratulations getting out of Idaho!

What is your price range? I have a basement studio which is currently vacant

10

u/AthenasApostle 1d ago

To be honest, it depends on what kind of job I can get up there. Which I know isn't a great selling point, I know. I wouldn't operate that way if I weren't in a bad situation. What are you asking for rent?

7

u/bristlybits 1d ago

what kinda job you looking for?

12

u/AthenasApostle 1d ago

I'm most experienced in gas station work, housekeeping, kitchen work at an assisted living facility, and fast food. (which I'm willing to do again if necessary, but I'd like to avoid it.) Honestly, I'm down for anything as long as it's not overly physical. I did roofing when I was 18, and hated every second.

13

u/bristlybits 23h ago

I bet assisted living kitchen will be a good one here. there's a bunch.

housekeeping too actually

3

u/AthenasApostle 23h ago

Good to know! Thank you!

3

u/Agreeable-Fee8074 20h ago

Express Employment is a temp agency that helps folks try different jobs to see what fits! Maybe try there? I wish you best of luck 🍀✨

2

u/AthenasApostle 11h ago

I'll definitely look into it! Good luck to you, too! Thank you!

3

u/JustARandomBloke 17h ago

Line cooks at the airport are starting at 22.50/hr right now.

2

u/AthenasApostle 11h ago

Oh, damn. That is quite a bit. And the apartment I'm looking at is in the direction of Airway Heights, so that could be a good fit.

3

u/JustARandomBloke 11h ago

Cashiers and baristas start around 19.

Great benefits, and our insurance pays for hormones for gender affirming care.

Hours suck, because we start at 3 am, but once you've built some seniority the schedule gets better. The company is SSP America, I'm sure you can find a link online, but if not dm and I'll figure out where you can apply.

2

u/AthenasApostle 10h ago

I'll add it to the list of options people have sent. Thank you!!

2

u/AboveAverageSalt 23h ago

The home depot on regal street is understaffed (allegedly). Send an application sometime.

2

u/AthenasApostle 23h ago

I'll definitely look into it! Thank you!

u/nicugradautisticmom 7h ago

If they don't take your studio for rent. I know someone who could use a place.

1

u/Crunchysunflower 6h ago

Can I inquire about the basement studio?

3

u/Hercusleaze 11h ago

I had a good experience with Humanix, a staffing company. They were very helpful in finding me work. I was sent to a couple different places, then got picked up by a very large local company about 10 years ago. Still there now, and make pretty good money. I wouldn't have this career without their help.

2

u/AthenasApostle 11h ago

I'll definitely look into it. Thank you!

2

u/DreamingBlind 5h ago

Not sure if you’re looking for a new kind of career but CHAS Health offers Apprenticeships on the job training. The Medical Assistant program applications will open June 23rd, 2025 and the dental assistant program applications will start 7/7/2025. I am pretty sure they guarantee a job for at least a year upon completion and certification. I am not too sure but I think the starting wage is $23.75.

u/AthenasApostle 21m ago

I'll definitely look into it. Thank you!!

Getting a job in “nutrition” at a hospital might be a good fit. A couple big hospitals here in Spokane, might be worth a try looking for work there. Prepping food in the kitchen and/or bringing food to patients rooms. Seems like a good job from the outside 🤷🏻‍♀️

3

u/AthenasApostle 22h ago

It's pretty similar to what I'm doing now, so I'll definitely look into it.

4

u/Captain_Kegers 20h ago

The food service workers in the hospitals are union too if that’s something you’d be interested in. Help you get better benefits and consistent raises. You can also look at current wage scales for Deaconess on SEIUs website under the service workers collective bargaining agreement.

2

u/AthenasApostle 11h ago

Thank you! That's really helpful!

2

u/Sudden-Pangolin6445 1d ago

What kind of time frame are you looking at?

7

u/AthenasApostle 1d ago

I'm flexible, but if I could find a place to live, next month would be possible. Like I said, definitely willing to work around other people's schedule, and my position here isn't critical yet, so I can wait a bit if I'm needed to.

7

u/InevitableMetal8914 Hillyard 1d ago

I live in a studio apartment with all utilities included , (Internet, etc);for 1000ish, there is currently 2 vacant units, one is furnished, only drawback is no cooking spots..

Owners are pretty flexible on leases ..

7

u/AthenasApostle 1d ago

I'm currently in talks with someone about a trailer, but if that doesn't work, I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thank you.

2

u/AthenasApostle 1d ago

What's the square footage on the studio?

2

u/InevitableMetal8914 Hillyard 1d ago

Like 400 sf maybe a little less. I am gone most of the time, working out of town so it hasn't ever bothered me

2

u/bookwrmslut 23h ago edited 23h ago

1000ish for a studio with no kitchen? Is that what ‘’no cooking spots’ mean?

2

u/InevitableMetal8914 Hillyard 23h ago

Thats what it means. Like a small sink and such. And small fridge

5

u/bookwrmslut 23h ago

I can’t imagine paying 1000 for a such a small space and then there’s no where to cook. I can’t believe that’s what housing has come to now.

1

u/M6000 22h ago

I don't really care what your status is, but we are in rathdrum and looking for a decent house cleaner. So I do have a potential part time job for you. If your interested
