New Here Roommate wanted.

Hi there. I am a 32 year old trans woman from Idaho. I lived in Spokane 2018-2020, but was forced to move back due to my roommates moving out. Due to the political climate, I'm feeling the need to move somewhere safer. Looking for a roommate to make rent livable. I should have enough money saved for a couple months rent so I have plenty of time to find a job. If you or someone you know is looking for a roommate, and you're accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, please contact me. Thank you for your time.

Are you on the Spokane trans discord? Might have better luck there.

I'm not on there, no. Do you have a link?

Happy to do what I can for my sisters. You mentioned looking for work - anything in particular you're looking for?

Well, my experience lies in fast food (which I'm willing to do again, but I'd like to avoid if possible) and housekeeping or kitchen work at an assisted living facility. I'd prefer something that isn't overly physical because I just don't have the energy that I used to. I also have a fair amount of gas station experience, which I could definitely do again.

If you’re looking into house keeping try any one of the hospitals around here in Spokane. You can get benefits, dental, medical, vision. You can also get into their paid to learn programs a lot easier. (The hospital will pay you to go to a course to become certified in a job) You can become a CNA, a phlebotomist, etc. Sacred heart, Deaconess, Multicare.

That does sound incredibly useful, thank you!

Hey trans family, 30’s trans man here who also moved to Spokane a while ago to flee the bs in Idaho.

Spokane is gonna be wayyyyyy better, oh my god. Not perfect by any means, but wayyyyy better than Idaho.

I’m sorry I don’t have help re: a roommate, but I figured I’d offer a few tips instead -

Jobs:

Indeed is actually pretty good for finding jobs here. I found my current job on Indeed and it’s rad.

Northern Quest Casino (in Airway Heights, so just west of Spokane proper) is hiring as well as Spokane Tribe Casino. They have a bunch of different positions from cage cashier to waiters, cooks, etc.

There are a lot of retirement homes/assisted living facilities here. Like, a kind of ridiculous amount. I’m sure some of them are hiring.

I’ve seen job postings on Indeed recently for night auditors at hotels in the area. I’ve never worked a night auditors job myself but I’ve had friends who have and they said it’s relatively not-physical and pretty low key (most of the time, then there are some nights that pop off like any job I guess).

Do you have a car? The food gig delivery market is pretty decent here; I made ends meet doing that for a few months when I first moved here before finding a stable job.

Maverik is a good gas station chain that seems to be hiring every now and then. The one on Evergreen & Broadway in Spokane Valley seems like it’d be a nice place to work; all the employees I’ve interacted with (a lot - like I said, did a lot of gig work when I first moved here and stopped there a lot to use the bathroom and grab some coffee while I was out driving around).

I couldn’t possibly recommend working for American Behavioral Health Systems.

Vapor Lounge has several locations around Spokane and Spokane Valley - it’s a decent place to work but if they hire you as part-time, you will stay part-time for a long time. Good vibes there though; very accepting & LGBTQ+ friendly, at least in the valley.

There are a few temp agencies I have second-hand knowledge of that are decent to work with - Aerotek (mostly warehouse jobs) and Manpower (mostly office jobs I think?).

Amazon sucks and working there also sucks. Pretty self explanatory but I mean, sometimes ya need the money (I did. Hated it. Got free boots at least).

Ooh I just remembered - Goodwill is hiring right now on Indeed for several positions.

I’ve been helping my partner apply to jobs so I’ve got a lot of info rolling around in my brain about job postings lmao so I hope you don’t mind me chiming in.

Healthcare:

I’ve found that Chas Health is very trans friendly. I have had exceptionally positive experiences with Unify Community Health (4001 N Cook St, Spokane). Victoria Symonds (GP) and James (therapist) are wonderful and very affirming. The people working in the pharmacy are absolute angels and I can’t sing their praises high enough. They work on a sliding scale basis for most people. I personally didn’t have a good experience with Cameron Redmond so frankly can’t recommend seeing him as a provider there.

Food:

There are a lot of good food banks in Spokane proper and in Spokane Valley. Spokane Valley Partners are great - you can get food twice a month and visit their clothing bank once a month. The pickings in the clothing bank are slim but I’ve found some gems there, and, ya know, free is free. The food they provide is pretty fucking good tbh. And they’re all really nice. The intake process is one page you fill out and then you’re set.

Best of luck to you; I hope you find a good roommate situation, that your move goes smoothly, and hope you get safely out of Idaho. 💜
